Matusz tunes up

Bowie Baysox starter Brian Matusz pitched just one inning aainst the New Britain Rock Cats today before being removed from the game. The Orioles, officially, have not announced that he'll make Tuesday night's start against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Field, but I'd have to say this stretches the boundaries of coincidence.

The Orioles 2008 first round draft choice, and the No. 24 prospect on Baseball America's preseason list of the top prospects in the major leagues, appears to be on his way to join the Orioles rotation at least seven months ahead of schedule.

Yeeeeeeesssssss!!!!!!!!!! (Or words to that effect! LOL)

Hell yea, Andy.

Lets see a little Patton and Arrieta in September if they shake off their AAA funk.

Then give Wacko for Flacco's Brother a cup of coffee later this year too! If there was 1 bad thing about the Sherrill trade its that we don't need Bell with Mike Flacco waiting in the wings!

Who kidnapped Andy McPhail and replaced him with Jim Beattie?

I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad move, but it doesn't seem like a typical McPhail move. Why move Matusz from Double A to the big leagues when instead we could promote Arrieta, who has pitched well at Norfolk, to Baltimore and move Matusz to Norfolk?

Matusz has a ton of talent, but I have a feeling he's going to get rocked in his debut. I just hope he doesn't go the way of Hayden Penn.

Pete's reply: Arrieta has struggled a bit lately and Matusz is on a roll. I think that's the reason.

I like it. He deserves a shot, and the exposure will be beneficial. I also like Chone Figgins as a Free Agent 3rd baseman. He's scored 81 runs thus far and has over 30 stolen bases. Bring him in and lead him off. Bump everyone back one slot and improve the lineup greatly.

You may be surprised at what Matusz can do. He's got a good head on his shoulders and may just be the shot in the arm that the O's need.

Why not? Pete, why do you think DT pulled Hernandez so quick? Just two runs in! Hope there is nothing wrong with him!

He didn't have the good breaking ball and walked a few as well.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: He had thrown 102 pitches in less than 5 innings. He was fortunate to get out of there with the game still in hand.

You really don't need to hit post three times for your comment to come up. Trust me.

If you notice, these moves tend to occur when fan interest starts to wane. This is more about trying to drum up fan interest than it is about getting pitchers ready for the major leagues.

Matusz and Tillman, while talented, just are not major league ready at this point.

Keith,

In regards to your question as to why they took out Hernandez. These days managers are focused on pitch counts these days moreso than innings pitched. Hernandez had thrown 102 pitches by the fifth inning. One hundred pitches tends to be the magic number these days with managers.

JJ,, I was able to stay with you through all these guys other than Turley, Larsen, and Wilhelm. But I think they broke that gang up pretty quickly anyway.

I don't think that A-Mac is necessarily panicking, but I do think he made a deal just for the sake of it to keep the fans happy, and now he is bringing up a rookie a whole year too early.

I liked the old snoozer Andy who took forever but got it right in the end. And if you really look at what has happened with the roster this season, he hasn't been snoozing all that much anyway.

Slow down, Mac. Don't let other teams pick yiour pockets and don't rush the rookies. Wieters, Reimold, Hernandez, etc. came up when they were ready, and it was just as exciting. It wukk be less exciting if Matusz gets skapped around.

What would be really nice is if all the morons that posted about Tillman being overhyped and a bust etc, etc...after his first start, would just find something better to do with their Tuesday night after Matusz's start.
As much as I'm sure you guys love to read your own comments, and tell everyone I told you so, while mireing in your negativity, maybe you could just leave the discussion to rational thinking people.

I guess we will find out on Tuesday if Matusz is being rushed or not. Whatever it may be I am sure the start will not make or break his future.

Pete, Nice article on the Sherrill trade. Glad that Andy seems to think that we will be more competitive next year.

This should be an interesting week. It is foolish to think that anyone knows the impact of bringing up Matusz this early. It is clear, however that he has accomplished more at this stage than any of the other young pitchers. If I'm not mistaken, he was supposed to be very mature and was said to be the most big league ready prospect by many people. Give the young man a chance. While I'm no baseball expert, I do think all these young guys look pretty darn good for their lack of experience. I am more concerned about the lack of toughness, lack of direction and lack of leadership shown by the rest of the team. These guys appear to be satisfied with losing as long as the checks keep coming. Winning brings additional responsibility and these guys appear to be satisfied with playing out the string. This team needs hungry players, not guys looking for the next paycheck. Team attitude is what sucks on this team. They are more talented than this. The desire is missing. They need to get their heads straightened out. Some need to be kicked in the a#@ a few times.

Hey Pete, with Matt Hobgood's ERA at 7.20 after three starts, don't you think he'd make a good number two in the O's rotation?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Matt Hobgood's ERA is more irrelevant than the last pick in the NFL draft.

I like the Matusz move, howevr there are large matters to be aware of, #1 why break him in in Detroit, don't make much sense. #2 Why task a first year rookie to get his first start at Detroit against non othr than Verlander. If Matusz can pull this off he is a "well Matured" young man, if not, it's yet another blunder by the O's management, which we mostly agree needs a change amongst themselves. Good Luck Brian, I wish you all the luck in your opener.

I don't think one start in the Bigs is going to harm this guy. He may not pitch perfect, but he will have a great learning experience. How old is Lester from boston? or Buchholz? Or how old was Lincecum coming in for the Giants. There are many young guns. He will do fine coming in. Good luck to him. It will be a great gauge.

i attened last nite game in new britian between games of the double header we asked 3rd baseman jason white if brian got called up he said yes but did not say if aaa or to the bigs

It was either time for a promotion to AAA or the majors. He was dominating in AA... 7-0, 1.55 ERA, 46.1 IP, 46 K's, 11 BB's, 31 hits

I'll be watching!
