MacPhail: Trembley safe...for now
If you haven't already, take a look at Jeff Zrebiec's story on the Web site about the future of manager Dave Trembley.
President of baseball operations Andy MacPhail essentially guarantees that Trembley will finish the season, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has been reading the blog for the past few weeks.
There has been plenty of anti-Trembley angst around here, and some of it is understandable with the team in a horrible tailspin, but I've been saying for quite a while that MacPhail would not make a managerial change in-season. The short-term mollification of the most disenchanted fans isn't enough to justify a move that could end up handcuffing MacPhail if he decides to make a change after the season.
MacPhail continues to leave open the possibility that the team will pick up Trembley's option for 2010, but that probably will depend on the team showing improvement over the final seven weeks of the season.

News flash - Bedard has season-ending surgery for a torn labrum. Pete, what is your take on that? Will anyone be foolish enough to give this guy a huge contract for next year? Puh-lease MacPhail - stay away from him like you would the H1N1 flu. He just seems to be such a bad investment so often.

Pete's reply: I don't think anybody will give him big money now, which means that somebody will get to take a flyer on him relatively cheaply. The Orioles, in my mind, need more of a sure thing than that, but if he has to sign an incentive-laden deal, he might end up being a huge bargain for somebody.

Ive not liked alot of moves Trembley has made (or not made) but Macphail knows what he is doing. It would be senseless to change right now. For one you need to see who is available after the season.
Pete, Any idea if Macphail could coax Tom Kelly out of retirement?

Pete's reply: You're not the first person to ask me that, but I doubt it.

Sure would have been nice if Roberts could have bowled over Napoli on that play at the plate. Or at least slid in spikes up.
I know its not the smart play - you don't risk the injury with a 6 run lead.
I'm just saying it would be nice to see a catcher pay the price for blocking the plate without the ball. When any other fielder does that it is interference. But for a catcher it is a "nice" play.
The only way you stop that is an elbow to the chin or a cleat to the ribs. Is that really any dirtier of a play than the catcher illegally & intentionally blocking the base path?
ok taking a deap breath and watching the bats come to life...
(looks like Trembley might get away with pulling Tilman after that weak line drive "knocked" him from the game.)

Pete's reply: You want your big people bowling over the catcher, not your little leadoff guy who is leading the world in doubles. Brian is more likely to get hurt than Napoli, who is wearing padding.

Quite opposite result for Trembley tonight. Last time McPhail announced his job was safe we were the ones getting 30 dumped on us.
Of course he still gets a shot lobbed at him for pulling Tillman, but I'm not going to get sucked in.
Great win!

Do you think AM could coax Earl Weaver out of retirement?
Just wondering.

I want to give Dave some love! I think he is doing a pretty good job. I see Dave's job as this, develop the young players and protect the young pitchers from being banged around too much. Both the young pitchers and position players have all developed nicely, and the young pitchers have been learning but not getting too far over their heads. Dave is doing a fine job. Don't fault him because Mora, Huff and Scott look bewildered at the plate half the time.
