Coming to a ballpark near you?

If you bristle at all the Red Sox and Yankees fans who take over Camden Yards when their teams come to town, you're not going to like what may be a growing trend in sports marketing and promotion.

The New Jersey Nets recently unveiled a new ticket promotion that -- if it's successful -- could be coming to a ballpark near you. The Nets are offering a 10-game ticket plan that includes games against some of the top teams in the NBA and a promotional giveaway that features some of the game's top stars. Fans who buy two of the 10-game plans get five Nets jerseys, each of them reversible...and guess what's on the other side of that Nets logo?

The jerseys reverse to feature the names and numbers of the league's top opposing players, so a geographically displaced Lakers fan can turn the Nets jersey inside out and it becomes a Kobe Bryant jersey.

Nets CEO Brett Yormark was just on CNBC explaining that the Nets have to reach out to casual basketball fans to boost attendance. Opponent marketing, as this kind of thing is called, is nothing new, but the Nets have taken it to a whole new level. The 10-game plans start at $350 and fans must buy two to get the five jerseys, which feature a total of 10 players (five Nets and five opposing stars). The deal also includes a four-week subscription to the New York Post. Hmmmm.

The Orioles depend heavily on the patronage of Yankees and Red Sox fans to boost attendance for almost a quarter of their home dates. MASN already aggressively markets opposing players in its "Who will own it?" campaign. What's next? Nick Markakis/Derek Jeter Reversible T-shirt Tuesday?

I will forever boycott the O's if they do something like this. In my opinion, they should not let people buy games against the Roid Sux or Spankees unless you purchase tickets to at least 3 other non-prime home games. They should help keep these pests that have infested our area at bay. The O's should also charge a premium for out of state ticket purchasers. If you live outside of a MD zipcode, you're charged an extra $5-10/ticket. They can say that MD tax payers helped pay for the stadium, so non-MD residents have to pay more to go to a stadium they didn't help finance. That's how you get rid of the plague of fair weather Boston fans and the swarm of Yankee fans. That, and winning. And hopefully the Sox miss the playoffs this year and the fair weather sox fans go jump on some other bandwagon.

Angelos would love this idea! He has already made a killing opening his arms to the legions of Sox, Yanks and whoever is popular that week fan. Face it everyone until the O’s start winning this is Fenway South or the Maryland Bronx.

Hey if you cant beat em….PROFIT OFF THEM!

Let’s face it The Orioles are a Washington Generals like team for the Sox and Yanks to play globetrotters. In 5-10 years we will all be Sox fans

I think Trembley is a yankee fan and most the other players are with the Orioles for a paycheck lol I wish we could get people from the local area to play ball for us

you know how to keep sox and yankee fans away? level the playing field with some form of salary cap. the fact that MLB allows NY and Boston to have such a competitive advantage is morally wrong.

Nauseating.

Pop Fisher,

A cap doesn’t matter. MLB has more parody than any other sport with profit sharing. If the Orioles and Pirates want to make stupid moves and mismanage their funds that’s their fault. Angelos didn’t get #1 worst owner in SI for nothing.

I wonder how much the fact that you have to pay more for a ticket to a New York/Boston game effects Orioles fans attendance. I personally will not go to either of those games due to the extra charge. Why pay more when the next home series I can save up to $15 a ticket.

If baseball needs a cap how did the Rays only spend 8 mill more than the Os this season and are in contention. Why are the Rangers beating the Red Sox for a wild card? How is Minnesota still in the hunt? How can the Marlins win WS titles dump the team each time and make new ones to compete every couple years? The problem is not a cap it’s the Orioles!

Dave, I would be with you boycotting the team if they put on a promotion like this. I am not with you, however, on the requirements to buy tickets. As a "geographically displaced" Orioles fan (born in MD) I am only able to make it up to a couple of games a year (if I'm lucky.) Charging an extra fee for my ticket or requiring me to buy more than I'm able to attend would hinder my chances to come to the few games I can make.

Don't get me wrong, I hate seeing OPACY filled with red and/or navy just as much as the next true O's fan. But placing restrictions on out of state fans would alienate an already faltering fan base.

Favre is back LOL

i guess ticket prices wouldn't be so high when the players do not have people like scott boras for a agent. off topic bret farve is making a mockery of the nfl with his antics

The parity in MLB is indeed a parody of that in the NFL.

I agree with Dave's idea for the surcharge; I've thought the same way for a few years now. Here's a few other ideas:

1.) Waive the added prime game fee for all O's fans or ticket buyers who live in MD. That way, tix are cheaper for locals and more expensive for the out of towners.

2.) Make all season ticket plans include tix to two or three Yankee and/or Red Sox games, instead of to one of either teams or one to each team (or none) as it currently is. Or maybe even throw in a free ticket to a Boston or NY game as a thank you for being a season ticket buyer/holder.

3.) The birthday promotion is a great idea, but it doesn't currently include a free ticket to a Boston or NY game. They ought to change that policy in order to increase the number of O's fans at Boston and NY games.

4.) Maybe give away coupons or vouchers for free concessions at these games to increase the amount of O's fans? This way, people would save some money when they come to the ballpark.

I think this is a great idea!

Let's give away "Douchera" t-shirts whenever the Yanks are in town and "Roid Sox" t-shirts to all the Boston fans. That should really show our visitors how much we respect and appreciate them.

Travis has it right. I don't go to Yankees or Red Sox gamed when there are 63 other home games that are significantly cheaper to attend. And you're not surrounded by idiots, either.

Well this beats the promotions the Bullets had back in the late 80's and early 90's "The only way you will see Michael, Larry, Magic and Barkley is to get the season ticket package and I still have that poster my kids love it.

Why is everyone working so hard to develop an elaborate scheme to exclude out-of-towners? It would probably take NY and Boston fans 5 seconds to figure out a workaround (e.g., have a local friend buy the tickets), while it would probably tick off loyal O's fans who live in PA, DC or VA or have moved elsewhere and are visiting from out of town.

I think this is a problem that takes care of itself when our team becomes more competitive. Then more people will hold onto their season tickets and single game tickets to the marquee match-ups will sell out to local fans. Until then, why not make some money off NY and Boston fans to help with the rebuilding? I admit it's annoying to go to the ballpark and hear some obnoxious Sox fan who's only been rooting for the team since 2003 go on and on about how "cheap" everything is in Baltimore. Next time, just smile and encourage them to spend more money at the park and downtown...

Dave hold on there son. I live in Pa. (no relation to Felix)& I probably go to 15 Oriole games a year with my family. I sure as hell don't want to be charged any more than a fan living in Md. that might go to 2 or 3 games a year.

If a fan at Camden Yards wears an Orioles jersey, he should be commended.

If he wears a Yankees jersey, he should be given common courtesy, an incorrect set of directions, and steered toward an inappropriate restaurant or bar after the game.

If he wears a reversible Orioles/Yankees jersey, he should be hogtied with a sack over his head and taken to a room under the stadium where he will be forced to watch last year's "MASN Fantasy Camp" commercials in continuous loop.

I actually do like the concept of trying to keep tickets to big games in the hands of Orioles fans. Like Andrew says though, outside fans will find a way and ultimately the Orioles lose revenue. I think doing it on Birthdays might not break the bank and be a nice gesture though. Plus birthdays are easier to verify and harder to forge than an address.

Winning will definitely squeeze them out. Once the flock returns so to speak, everyone will miss the days when they could get Yanks or Red Sox tickets just about anytime they wanted.

Pretty soon we could all end up taking trips to Rogers Center to see games if the O's put together a consistent winner.

All the distress over the Yankee and Sox fans coming here will disappear once the O's can put a competitive team on the field. The trip down here to see your team lose isn't near as much fun as coming hundreds of miles to see a more or less guaranteed win.
Camden Yards used to sell out as reliably as Fenway does now. You give Boston or NY 12 straight losing seasons and soon enough their parks would be filled with O's fans coming north.

We should be happy the Red Sox and Yankees still come to use Camden Yards! Since most people in Baltimore have stopped going to games its an easy source of revenue the city needs. Don’t blame the Sox and Yanks for messing up the Orioles that’s Angelos fault. If he wanted the team to be good he would have taken different steps the last 12 years. Don’t blame league rules, mean orioles critics etc etc the fact is we have the worst owner in baseball and baseball is not flawed any team small market or large can win its been proven you just have to try.

First of all the idea of charging out of towners more is just plain stupid I know off the top of my head 10 people that live in Baltimore county that are Sox fans and many more that are yankees fans so there goes that idea of keeping tickets out of their hands. Also if you ever go on ebay people sell their tickets ALL the time for these games, I have a good friend from NJ who buys season tickets for the Orioles and Phillies and sell 90% of the tickets and makes a killing, the yankees and red sox games pay for the O's season tix and he still has other 63 games w/ 2 tickets he can sell.

I'm a Yankees fan living in DC and make it a point to head up to Camden Yards for as many Yankees games as I can. I also typically watch three or four other Orioles games per summer because I'm a huge baseball fan, I think that Camden Yards is one of the best baseball parks in the country, and I think that spending a day around the Inner Harbor and Fells Point is a fun thing to do.

My point is that I've followed the Orioles fairly closely over the last couple of years, and I always chuckle when Orioles fans complain when their stadium gets overrun by fans from New York or Boston. First off, this wouldn't happen if Baltimore fans bought the tickets. Second, the Orioles are getting better! Granted, the owner has been pretty terrible over the last couple of years, and I understand how that can jade a fan base. However, Andy McPhail has done a superb job rebuilding this team. Even if the Orioles are in the cellar of the AL East, they have some exciting young position players (Markakis, Jones, etc.) to complement solid veterans like Brian Roberts, and the young pitching is only a season or two from emerging from the minor leagues. Every year, McPhail trades a couple of pieces in order to accumulate more quality in the organization.

The bottom line is that the product right now isn't that bad. I am not even a fan, and I enjoy going to games at Camden Yards. And maybe with a little more fan support, the Orioles can turn the corner in the toughest division in baseball.

But if Orioles fans want to continue to stay home during the "non-premium" games, I'll be more than happy to head up there a few times each summer to watch the Yankees dominate.

If the O's want to go down the opponent marketing path, they should call Susan O'Malley - she practically invented it with the pathetic Bullets/Wizards.

The powers that be may deem it good business, but as a real fan of 40 years, it's just adding insult to injury.

The Yankees have always been the bigggest draw in baseball and fill the coffers of every city which they visit. The Red Sox are almost as profitable for the home team. Both teams generate sellouts and excitement. There was a time when the Orioles could also do that as a visitor; they could do it again if they would put a team together. Even a Bronx born Ynkee fan like me appreciated Edie murray, Cl Ripken and Brooks Robinson.
