What's up with Guthrie?
Don't know yet whether Jeremy Guthrie is feeling under the weather or what. He clearly was uncomfortable on the mound and his velocity was below normal. When he walked two batters in the third inning, fill-in manager Dave Jauss went out to get him. Mark Hendrickson is on the mound and the Orioles need him to pitch some innings.
Guthrie needed 58 pitches to get through 2 1/3 innnigs. He walked four batters and gave up all three of his runs on a homer by Franklin Gutierrez. It wasn't pretty, but nobody gets yanked after 58 pitches -- and only one run-scoring hit -- unless something's out of whack. Guthrie was in the dugout afterward looking a little green, but we'll obviously know more later.
Postgame Guthrie update: Turns out, our suspicions were correct. Guthrie wasn't feeling well, which explained why he looked shaky right before pitching coach Rick Kranitz and head athletic trainer Richie Bancells went out to see him early in the game. The fact that they left him out there was an indication he wasn't suffering from arm or shoulder soreness. Then, when he went back to the dugout and sat down after he was removed, he looked like a guy who was woozy. Dave Trembley said afterward that he was experiencing dizziness when he was warming up before the game, but obviously tried to get the team some innings to preserve the bullpen.

Bad sushi?
Actually, his results weren't much different than when he has not felt well.

Peter:
Looks like I should at least get a hat tip from you. Your last two posts have been on topics that I brought up in the last hour in my posts on your blog.
Next topic:
Do cynical sports columnists wear Hawaiian shirts to cover the mustard stains from the hot pastrami on rye?

Pete's reply: Kenny, I'm going through the posts now. If you want a co-writing credit and a tip of the cap (though I'm not wearing one at the moment), it's okay with me, but it was really something of a coincidence. I pulled up the same citation on the MLB site. Maybe great minds think alike. Frankly, if I had done the posts first, I could have just made yours a featured post and saved all that writing. And you know, because you're here a lot, that I would have been happy to do that.

Ooops...Sorry, make that "his results weren't much different than when he HAS felt well."

Pete--Look for this--Trembley will reappear in the dugout tonight, wearing Huff's mustache.

Pete,
With Guthrie going on the DL will our starting rotation be 5 rookies after the all-star break? Hernandez, Berken, Bergesen, Tillman and Arrietta/Patton? Or will someone else be plugged in? How much longer can this organization have our BEST 3 pitchers in the minor leagues while orioles fans suffer watching this crap!!
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think Tillman is next up. Don't know how soon anybody else comes up.

Did Jim Hunter just say that the Mariners infield was "drawn in" at double play depth?
Can someone please help this man!

Here's hoping MASN allows one option of the MASN Player of the Game vote to be Huff's Moustache.

John L:
Apparently you have the direct line to MacPhail's office. Didn't realize Guthrie was already on the DL. And bet your foreclosed house on it: Arrieta will not be in the bigs before September at least.

'"drawn in" at double play depth'
i thought that was what i heard

Verry nice job by Hendrickson tonight...he is actually doing a very good job in long relief. Maybe the umpires have been reading about the O's jogging habits on the bases? It was good to see Dave blow his lid a little - probably did him some good as well.

Hunter did and can call it what he wants. Does not matter Mora came through on the drawn in double play depth infield. How about that great play by Mora, so everyone still want to trade him?

I think Guthrie (barring injury) needs significant improvement the 2nd half if he wants to keep his job next year.
Doesn't it appear that B Roberts has fallen apart since he has gotten married? Maybe too much night life? Stress? Too much worrying about what the hot wife is up to?

Pete's reply: Or he's got a nagging chest cold.

Holy mackerel, Melvin!

What's up with Guthrie? That's easy he is a poor excuse for a major league pitcher. At the pace he is on, he will give up about 40 home runs this season. He is a bottom of the rotation pitcher on most other teams and would not be a starter on the better teams in the league. I wish everyone would stop covering for these guys just because currently they have no one better.

While I'm not going to argue that Roberts hasn't looked like he's playing hard at least offensivley his numbers haven't been horrible. I've personally never thought of Guthrie as more than a #2 and that would be generous.
Any news on Miguel Angel Sano and if he is "16" how far would he be from the big leagues even 4 years he'd be only 20? How much do you think the O's would be willing to throw at him would it be Weiters money like it will probably take? If he's really late first round talent but only 16 it seems like that may be worth it particularly since we have no depth at mif.

Pete's reply: Haven't heard anything in the last couple days.

Hey Donald,
Give Guthrie a break. He had a bad night, who knows maybe he is under the weather like Roberts.
I think that almost every major league team would want him in their rotation.
Go LUUUUUUKE! 7 rbi!

Wow Amazing what happens when Luke Scott is actually in the lineup. Once and for all he needs to be in there everyday untill he shows he shouldn't be. He is our best power hitter there is no reason to sit him for matchups, left handers whatever excuse there has been.
What did they say about the Rockies that Clint Hurdle couldn't wait to get his second best team out there and then when Jim Tracy became manager he put the best players in everyday and they started winning.
The best players should play and if people aren't producing someone else should get a shot it is only fair. That's just my opinion.

What is it with everyone ripping apart Guthrie? The guy pitches 2 very good years, then starts this season with the stupid WBC garbage and hasn't seen right since then other than a few short stretches. He's still young and can be an asset to this team, just not this year so far.
On a side note, they should have picked Luke for the All Star game. How great would it have been to see an Oriole in the Home Run Derby? He deserved it, even before tonights outburst.

Maybe he is hung over?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Since he's a nice Mormon boy, I'm going to guess not.

I agree with O's fan in the Bronx, as Jeremy has been a very good pitcher for the O's. He is having a terrible season, but to hear people talk about cutting him in prior posts, is insane. He's been out of whack since the WBC.

I think Guthrie's got arm problems and has had them since last fall when they shut him down.
Posted by: mikezpen | July 8, 2009 5:19 AM
Hendrickson did a great job keeping the O's in the game. He's done quite well since he moved to the bullpen.
Hope its nothing serious with Guthrie.
Go O's!

Because fans from Baltimore are the most fair weather fans in the country

Guthrie? Definintely arm trouble. He's probably been hurting all season (duh) but his athletic ability and pride have covered the problem.
Is he a starter? Nah. Closer all the way.
Posted by: logiopath | July 8, 2009 9:25 AM
Really? Arm trouble? He was throwing 96 two starts ago. I hope it is not that. I guess if they thought it was arm trouble you would have heard something by now. Like when Koji went out, you knew within an hour that was an elbow issue.
