« What's up with Melvin? | Main | Guthrie gives in »

The streak ends

Robert Andino's third-inning single ended a string of 32 straight outs by the Orioles offense, or the equivalent of a 10 2/3-inning perfect game since Ty Wigginton homered to open the fourth inning yesterday.

Angels starter John Lackey looks nasty, but so does Jeremy Guthrie, whose breaking stuff is pretty sharp. He just completed his third scoreless inning, but it remains to be seen if he can stare down Lackey into the late innings.

Lackey's a tough SOB out there: love to watch him pitch. Weird to see Vlad Guerrero so... average.

I havent chimed in on B-Rob. Different take here: he looks absolutely lost out there at the plate. I havent seen Brian struggle this much at the plate probably since he was battling hairston for the starting gig. his number of K's recently is astounding for him. That disturbs me more than a lack of hustle or some routine errors every now and then.

Really Guthrie. Pete is there a reason for all these HR's off him. It is unbelievable.

just another lousy performance from JG. Abreu is not even a home run hitter. If you can't keep the ball in the yard you cannot pitch in the major leagues. That's pretty simple. Maybe he needs to go pitch in a bgger park.
He's wearing out his welcome. I hope they're fielding offers.

Peter,

I am a big fan of Markakis - but even i am starting to wonder about where he fits in the ordeer down the road...he seems to be overmatched too often by the good pitchers. I know he had a big hit against Papelbon, but he just seems to have a bit of a big swing. I think he is shortening up a bit and trying to adjust, which may cause his power #'s to drop. He's also got a newborn at home, so maybe he's not sleeping too well! Bottom line, on this team he needs to be better than "good" at the plate.

Guthrie just cannot keep the ball in the park. It is not like he pitches poorly overall, but his mistakes are traveling over the fence almost everytime. At first it seemed like an aberation, but at this point I have to admit it is the norm.

On a positive note, regardless of whether or not he gets the ability to keep the ball in the stadium, Guthrie can eat some innings this year and probably next until the rest of the young guys are ready to take over. It will be nice to have Bergeson, Matusz, Arrieta and Tillman in a rotation. Hope springs eternal.

I'm pretty sure Lackey is a FA after this season. He's a terrific pitcher who would make a great #1 starter and although he is definitely going to the Yankees, I'd like to see the Orioles take a shot at him anyway.

John Lackey is a free agent the O's should look at in the offseason! Pitches lots of innings and would bring some stability to the front end of the rotation!

Pete's reply: Agree, but he will end up with the Angels or the Rangers.

That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
