O's: Nick to Matt, how about that!

The play of tonight's game just happened in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Nick Markakis scooped up a single by Dustin Pedroia and gunned down Jacoby Ellsbury trying to score from second. It was Nick's league-leading 11th assist of the year, but that was just the half of it.

Rookie catcher Matt Wieters drew a line in the dirt and decided that Ellsbury was not going to get to the plate. The ball and Ellsbury arrived at about the same time, but Wieters blocked the plate and leaned into the runner, basically driving him into the ground for the final out of the inning.

It was just a fantastic major league play on the part of both players.

We'll have to wait and see if it makes any difference. It was a big out, keeping the Boston lead at two runs, but the Orioles didn't do a whole lot against Red Sox starter Brad Penny, who just left the game after give up just an unearned run over 6 1/3 innings.

I saw Ellsbury throw dirt in Wieters' face following Nick's outstanding throw-what a disgusting act.

Pete's reply: I can't believe that was intentional, but if it was and Matt thinks it was, I like Matt in the rematch, too. Either way, I think Ellsbury got more dirt in his face overall.

forget ellsbury weiters would have smashed him he is like 150 pounds he is a total scrub anyway

What a great play on both ends, an awesome throw by Nick and what a block Wieters put on the plate. They should send a copy to Cincinnati for Ramon to show him what a real catcher does on a close play at the plate!

It sure looked like he threw dirt in Wieters face on the replay. A very disgusting act indeed.

No kidding? I missed the dirt toss. What a punk. If DCab were still here, Ellsbury would be ducking tomorrow.

That's what I thought I saw, also. Jacob Ellsbury tossing some dirt in the direction or on Matt. But none of the announcers mentioned it. Rick Dempsey did say jokingly after the game about starting a brawl after a collision like that, but nothing about the DIRT. I hate to stir things up, but a BRAWL is probably what the O's need to get motiviated. Peter, are you covering the clubhouses after the game?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: No, I'm covering a couch in a cast right now.

A great play indeed by 2 players that will have much to do in moving us back to another level in this division.
That said, I think it's also pretty imperitive to have a closer when we turn the corner & Sherrill is our only answer in that department.
Please keep George with us Andy as we have nobody that even resembles a closer in this organization.

The throw was the best defensive play of the season without a doubt! Markakis HAS to win a Gold Glove this year. I, aslo would like to hear from the posters that said Matt Wieters, is delicate and afraid to block the plate. Please! Slow start by Matt and the world ends, same thing when Nick couldn't hit his weight in his 1st couple of months, and Adam was in a deep funk to start off his O's career. Takes time, as not everyone does it right off the bat.

Markakis, Jones and Reimold produced in the 9th.. Scott Huff and Mora did not. Markakis and Wieters provided the only real Os highlight.

Good game for the kids but for the vets.. well....

If DCab were still here, everyone would be ducking.

That was a great play. Most catchers wouldn't have the guts to block the plate like that. And *very few* catchers would have held onto the ball. To think that Wieters is playing like this in only his second year of pro ball, it's pretty amazing.

Of course the throw had to be perfect to cut down one of the fastest guys in the league, and it was.

A play like that shows that the O's have some all-around players who are potentially better than anything the other teams have. What they will surround these guys with will tell the story in the next couple years.

Ellsbury did not throw dirt in Wieters face. I would recommend you look at the replay again. It was a gesture that you got me that time. It was an excellent throw, block, slide, tag and it was a clean play.

Ellsbury did NOT throw dirt at Wieters. I have no idea what some of you people were looking at.

re: Ellsbury allegedly throwing dirt in Wieters face

IMO the guy swiped at the dirt in frustration.
I'm not seeing the intent.

I hate the Sox as much as anyone but Ellsbury didn't throw any dirt

Come on guys stop spoiling the fun. Ellsbury is a dirtbag. Lets sign Dcab for one game, he should only last a batter or two...as usual. Time to give Wigginton more playing time at 1b and DH and drop Huff from the fourth spot until he regains his stroke. Peter, I noticed Amber wasn't at the game last night. Has she joined you on the couch? ;-) ;-)

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: If you asked Amber that question, I'm sure she'd say that there isn't any room left on my couch....right after laughing uproariously.

I didn't see the play but am shocked....SHOCKED I say, to read that Wieters actually blocked home plate for once. It's about time.

I agree, looked like a "frustration" moment to me, also. And if Wieters got any dirt on him, it was definately not in the face.

Yeah no dirt thrown in Wieters face and if you keep watching Ellsbury even sticks his arm out to Wieters and asks if he is alright. But the real story is why do players continue to test nick Markakis' arm? He didnt lead the league last year and leading the league this year in outfield assist by accident. I guess teams especially with faster players roll the dice cause maybe they think that he cant make a perfect throw everytime. Well they are wrong and you would have a better chance coming home from Vegas a winner everytime then scoring on Markakis.
