Orioles: Ouch...double ouch! (updated)

If you just watched Brad Bergesen hop off the field after being hit on the lower leg by a screamer off the bat of Royals first baseman Billy Butler, you're holding your breath right now and wondering what else could go wrong.

Bergesen hobbled off the field and had to helped down the stairs into the dugout tunnel. Maybe he just got a painful shin bruise, but he looked like he was having trouble putting any weight on his left leg. I'm sure the Orioles will have an x-ray report soon.

Hopefully, he didn't suffer some kind of fracture, but even a deep bone bruise would be a very troublesome injury for a guy who makes his living with pinpoint command. I'll save the Dizzy Dean comparisons until after there's more information.

Instant update: The Orioles reported that the x-rays on Brad Bergesen's shin were negative and he's listed as day-to-day. I'm guessing he gets skipped once in the rotation to make sure he doesn't screw up his mechanics favoring a painful bone bruise.

Please update soon (that's all I can ask)!!

This is not good. We can't afford to lose Bergy. Why do you do this to Bergy, Baseball Gods? WHY? WHY? Update us as soon as you get more info, Pete.

X-Rays are negative.

Pete...

Just saw on mlbtraderumors a rumor Sherrill was traded to Dodgers. Emphasis on rumor, but have you heard anything. Can you see him in the bullpen?

Thanks!

That kid is awesome!

Hope he is ready to go in 5 days!

Saw a report that Sherrill is headed to the Dodgers for either their class AA or AAA third baseman. Any truth to the rumor, Mr. Schmuck?

"The Orioles are looking for a third baseman in return for Sherrill, sources said, and they are believed to prefer Josh Bell to Blake DeWitt.

Bell, 22, is hitting .296 with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs at Class AA Chattanooga.

DeWitt, 23, has major-league experience and is hitting .252 with two home runs and 24 RBIs at Class AAA Albuquerque."

Definately a scare. That is a pitcher's nightmare to have a line drive hit right back at him. Hopefully he is ok. They said he is day to day. I wouldn't be surprised if he is held back a couple days.

Everyone, stop with the nonsense. I'm glad he is OK, but so what if he gets hurt and fractures something. I hope we don't look at this kid as our "Savior". Toronto and Kansas city have two much better pitchers in Halladay and Grenkie. How's it working out for them? You have to have a good all around team. This kid is obviously not going to carry the team on his shoulders.

Several sites reporting Sherrill to Dodgers is a done deal. Who will close, Johnson, Baez, ???

Pete's reply: Johnson, of course.

ST. LOUIS -- The Dodgers shored up their bullpen Thursday by acquiring Orioles closer George Sherrill in exchange for two prospects, third baseman Josh Bell and pitcher Steve Johnson, according to baseball sources.

Sherrill can serve as a set-up man, or share the closer role with Jonathan Broxton.

The Dodgers still are hoping to acquire a starting pitcher and are rumored to still be pursuing Toronto's Roy Halladay.

BREAKING NEWS: O'S TRADE GEORGE SHERRILL TO DODGERS FOR 2 PROSPECTS: 3B JOSH BELL AND RHP STEVE JOHNSON....thanks to mlb.com text alerts for beating out the Bmore Sun.

Waiting on someone to say Trembley pulled Bergy to quick today. How about Big Papi coming to the yard this w/end after the report of steroids. We get A-Rod on his first game back and now Big Papi. Hopefully we can outcheer the bosux fans and give it to him. Go Os.

On the surface, I like the trade. Not concerned with who closes the rest of 09, and we can hopefully find/develop a closer for 2010 and 2011.

Pete, any intel on Bell and Johnson?

Pete,
Does the report of Sherrill being traded for a Double-A infielder and a still-unknown pitcher make any sense to you? It's incomprehensible to me. It seems foolish, crazy even. How do you give up one of the game's best closers for what appears to be so little?

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: It's making more sense to me after a few hours of pondering it. The Orioles were selling a good closer, but the Dodgers were buying a setup man.

no way I would have moved Sherrill

I wish someone would hit Baez in the shin.
