Dave's days off

Baseball's czar of discipline, Bob Watson, levied a two-day suspension and an undisclosed fine on Dave Trembley for admittedly continuing to interact with his team from the dugout tunnel after he was ejected from Tuesday night's game in Seattle. That's fair enough, though it also would be nice if -- in cases like this -- the Commissioner's Office also offered some statement on the decision of the umpires that precipitated the ejection.

Trembley appeared to have a legitimate gripe when the umpiring crew failed to award Nolan Reimold home plate on a throw by Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez that skipped into a camera well at Safeco Field.

They (MLB) should say something. The call was a no-brainer and all 4 umps screwed it up!

DT got it right and got a 2 game suspension. Would that mean the four idiots that got it wrong will get a 2 month suspension? Yeah, right! It's a free roll

I'd like MLB to implement what they do in the Japanese league, where in situations of a tricky call or a rule deep in the rulebook, the umpires get on the microphone and explain to the whole stadium what the call is and why they made it. Make them man up a little bit and take some responsibility when they either don't know the rules or are too lazy to bother enforcing them. This is ridiculous.

I wonder what would have happened to Trembley if he would have kept his mouth shut and not said that he remained in the tunnel offering advice to the staff during the game? I guess we'll never know but that wasn't very smart and likely had more to do with the suspension than his on-the-field actions.

The abysmal umpiring in MLB is part of the reason that I watch very little baseball anymore. They are a bunch of lazy arrogant showoffs with job security.

The umps have been terrible this year. You would think Dave would have been suspended on the comments he made about the junk the umpires have been calling.
Obviously MLB knows their umpires are crap and they let bad calls get away unpunished.
When will umpires getting suspended/punished be public knowledge?
They are making up their own rules (ala Jeter) and blowing horrible calls (Pedroia having the ball in his non-glove hand)
Sorry for the rant, but the umps need to learn their place as well.

is it just me or has anyone else seen some weird balls down the line being called fair when theyre foul...

not that you get great replays from MASN, but I feel like I have seen a few balls bounce before the bag or hop over it, and land in foul territory, called fair.

happened a month ago at home, cant remember the game, but it put a guy on second to make things interesting

Shamrock, if the ball passes over the bag, it's a fair ball. Doesn't matter if it eventually lands in foul territory, all it has to do is pass over the bag.

The fair/foul thing is one of the few things umps tend to consistently get right, usually because they're right there on the line.

I'm not sure why the umpire's union gets more clout than the player's union. They've been able to force drug testing on the player's but they can't make statements about the umpires? Heck, they have to have these ridiculous rules in place that no one can say anything about the umpires lest they go home and cry because mean Dave Trembley or Bobby Cox said they messed up. Boo hoo hoo.

It's pathetic. MLB needs to man up and get themselves off from being over the barrel and get control over their employees. It doesn't do anyone any good to coddle these guys anyway. I've seen umps initiate contact this year. They have zero fear. Ed Hochuli got taken to task and the NFL didn't fall apart.

Pete's reply: Has nothing to do with the unions. The players union is much stronger. It has to do with MLB not wanting to make statements that diminish the credibility of the umpires. Don't know why it's different in football, but I'd like to see MLB own up to big mistakes.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
