Cub fan hungers for win streak
Just when I thought Orioles fans were getting a little too emotionally involved with the team, this story surfaced about a Cubs fan who has announced he will go on a 500-calorie-per-day diet until the lovable losers from the Windy City reel off a five-game winning streak.
It's not exactly a hunger strike. The guy, 53-year-old Daniel Kamen of Buffalo Grove, Ill., can probably squeeze a couple of Lean Cuisine frozen entrees out of that 500-calorie limit, but it's the thought that counts. The Cubs need a little extra motivation. They're sitting right on .500 (38-38) in the wide-open NL Central, which may have something to do with the number of calories Kamen will allow himself until the Cubs win five straight or the season ends.
Of course, it's a lot easier to lose weight when you're an Orioles fan. You just watch a game like the one on Wednesday and you don't feel like eating for a week.

Brina Roberts makes the Orioles GO - into the toilet! He is dragging the team down more and more all the time! SIGGGHH!!

Peter
Nobody cares about the Cubs or Cubs fans...we would read the Tribune if we did...Cubs fans should just consider themselves lucky the Cubs are not in the AL East or they would never be out of fourth place...
And all this junk recently posted by others about Brian Roberts is just ridiculous..yes, a guy who is hitting near .300 and leading the league in doubles is somehow our problem. We have lost for ten years because of pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching...and we will not win anything until we have better pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching.. (hopefully soon)

Pete's reply: I care about Cub fans. And I'm the only one who gets to vote at 3 in the morning. Sorry.

Pete,Melvin Mora was quoted as saying he isn't worried about his hitting or lack of home run production but that he is bothered when he looks down at the standings and see the orioles 13 games out of first place. That might not look to you as being anything major but to me that looks like the first sign that this ship is starting to spring leaks. I keep telling you pete that all the money in the world won't make a difference to thses players when all they do his lose. The grind of this game is to overwhelming to over come years of futility. You came back at me again yesterday in defense of Brian roberts and i will again tell you that he falls into the same category as Melvin. he is now down to batting 275 he struck out 2 more times last night and is playing completly uninspired baseball. I don't know to what depths he will have to sink before you will see my point. he doesn't want to be here and before the orioles get stuck with a player for the next 4 yeras they better cut bait and salvage what they can. This ship is sinking very fast pete and if the orioles don't fire Dave t after the all star break what happened on the Ship Bounty will like like a fairy tail. Plan or no plan the veterans on this team are sick and tired of losing and NO PLAN IN THE WORLD CAN REMEDY THAT. WAKE UP PEOPLE>

Pete, this isn't really related to this item but I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your writing. I don't agree with all of your opinions (Andino and Itzuris are not starters on a good team), but I really do enjoy the blog and your writing style.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Thanks very much. I realize the Andino/Izturis dychotomy is particular to the Orioles and their situation.

Hey Blancione is there any way the O's can trade Roberts but keep his wife in town? just sayin' .. And Markakis needs to go on HGH or something - they don't test for that yet, do they? last thought, Luke Scott is quite impressive when he's squaring up on the ball.

So, are you saying, Pete, that your not going to eat for a week?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Well, let's just say that you have to have a very short memory in this business.

Nolan Rookie of the Month, congrats to him!!

Kind of funny how some people think your blog or Roch's blog is strictly baseball and Orioles related.
There is a lot more to sports and life than baseball, especially Orioles baseball unless you;re getting paid by the Orioles.

Amazing. Mora says he doesnt care about individual stats, just the team and somehow it gets spun into something negative.
...........................................................................................
Pete's reply: When you've got Melvin's stats, it's probably a good thing not to care about individual stats, but don't kid yourself. Melvin cares a lot about that, which is fine. It's a team game played by individuals, and individual stats matter.

Hey lucky you missed the entire meaning of what Mora was saying. He doesn't care about individual stats , he is just tired of losing and he has gotten to the point where he almost can't function anymore that is what he meant.I really can't believe that the fans of this town can't get what he is trying to say.

The White Sox are Chicago's team. The Cubs are Chicago's losers. Enough about the latter PLEASE!
...........................................................................................
Pete's reply: What a silly concept. It's definitely a Cubs town.

Brian Roberts is not the reason they are losing. The reason is because the team only has three seasoned pros in the lineup and only one starter that has started more than 16 big league games. Our closer only has one and one half years experience closing games Izturis will be back soon. But face it this is rebuilding, and so far so good. It took a while to turn over the rotation, but you can see good things coming their way. So many young stars Wieters, Reimald, Markakis, Jones and Andino playing everyday. It is good to see. Having Bergessen, Hernandez, Hill and Berken in the rotation has upside, but they were not about winning this year, so the best thing to do is not point fingers and blame people, Roberts will win more games for the Orioles with his hustle. Yes he makes errors sometimes and yes he makes errors, bottom line is you would not notice as much if they were on the good side of .500 baseball. Fact is Roberts did not cause the last two losses. Sometimes the better team wins! And right now at this moment they are not the better team.
Pete: Fyi check this out.My feeling is once Washington and Baltimore both win, they will get the fans. Your thoughts?

Pete's reply: If both teams get to the playoffs the same year, they'll draw okay, but I agree the market really isn't big enough for both to do well consistently.

The story on this particular Cub fan is interesting . It shows deep passion but the question is , is that kind of passion healthy for your health or not ? Nothing wrong with following , cheering , attending games , but what this guy doing ? He needs big time professional help !
By the way , Cubs' team payroll is $ 134 million , 3rd overall in MLB . You can look it up .

Pete's reply: That was pretty good. I never bully anyone, but I do give as good as I get.

I don’t really like the Cubs too much.. Usually when the birds start to tank each year I start following the Detroit Tigers. Both teams are similar being crime ridden cities and the Tigers away uni looks like the O’s….

Wow! This is kind of interesting do the majority of Orioles fans have a secondary favorite team for when the going gets tough in October? I know there is like some sort of unwritten rule that baseball fans have to root for one team but fans also love to see a team they like go to the playoffs and contend. Personally the way the birds are playing I don’t care… as long as you keep your mistress team out of the AL East.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I doubt there are many Cubs fans out there, but I thought it was a funny story at 2 am or so last night.

Miguel Angel Sano. That’s today’s story...hopefully the O's are gonna pay him. Baltimore may be this kid’s launching pad like Seattle for A-Rod but the potential this kid has could help bring attention to the club. Orioles pay this kid!

I ike the Tigers also and try to make a trip there once a year as it's the nearest MLB team geographically-'only' 5 hrs away. I keep getting rejected by my buddies when I suggest the Orioles' games but in all fairness, they only play in Detroit once a year and this year it's during the week...
When I finally see the Tigers/O's in Motor City I'll do the one-man version of Orioles nation...

TerryP- I salute you , you are a true dedicated O's fan .
By the way , I visited Detroit last October , saw the Tiger's new park , it was Camden like in its own way .

I have noticed the last few weeks that you have taken exception to posters including myself that have questioned your ability to post objectively about the orioles. It is becoming more obvious to me every day that it might be true. You might tell me that the only reason i am bringing this up again is because you have a different opinion then me on the current state of the orioles and the certain players that i am writing about. Pete make no mistake the worse that this situation gets and the further that brian roberts play keeps sinking even you will have to start facing realility much to your dismay.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Indeed I do take exception to the notion that because I'm actually there, talk to the players, the manager and general manager about why they do things, I somehow have a poorer grasp of things than you do from your living room. If you honestly believe that, then you need to find another blog, because it makes absolutely no sense for you to be here. Not because I don't want you here. You're welcome to write anything you want. But why in the world would you read me if you thought I had no credibility? What's going on here is, you think you're right and I think I'm right. That's just fine, until you tell me I lack integrity so my opinion is somehow diminished.

Two things Pete...first, congrats to Rodrigo Lopez making his 1st. start back in the show after 2 years essentially rehabbing. Great to see yet another Oriole castoff doing well. I hear he pitched 7 strong innings tonight leading the Phils past the Mess. The Phils pick him up for nothing & over here he'd be our # 2 behind our ace Bergessen. Homerun Guthrie is about as useful as duct tape in an igloo.
Last thing...the reason Mora was not in the lineup today was because he's still sulking for being pinch hit for in the recent win vs. Boston. We all know Mora requires 48 hours notice from the manager regarding any move he deems suspicious...so sitting out 2 straight games is Melvins passive-aggressive approach to Trembley's call the other night. He is burned out from this decade of losing & players his age are only going to be disruptive as we head into our annual July/August/September tailspin. Unload to a National league playoff type team asap & he'll grant you the ok to trade.
Please fasten your seatbelts...this ride is about to get very bumpy!
