Born on the 4th of July
Let's all wish each other a happy Independence Day and reflect on what a truly great country we live in. It's not without its faults -- NFL instant replay stands out for me -- but a lot of people made a lot of sacrifices to make it the beacon of freedom for the past couple of centuries, so Happy Birthday to us all.
On that subject, you might enjoy Candus Thomson's story about three prominent Marylanders who were born under the fireworks -- Peter Angelos, tennis star Pam Shriver and former Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.
There are some interesting quotes from Angelos, who waxes a bit philosophical about turning 80 on the day the nation turns 233. Take a look.

Pete,
Another couple of reasons on why I became a Republican and PA had to have SOMETHING going for him!
Happy 4th of July!

Pete,
Nice article today on the O's future. Despite not getting us any front line starters before this season, AM gets a strong A- for his body of work while here to include the steal of Andino. PA, his grade remains to be seen, but if he lives up to his words he could redeem himself. DaveT may be where we depart on opinions, if Dave showed as much enthusiasm or emotion during the game, like he does in interviews it would go a long way in getting most fans exceptance, but his line-ups aren't too good, his decision making in pulling pitchers is suspect at best, and the fundamentals or lack there of, are a direct reflection of the manager so we will give Dave a C-.
The youth movement has been a booming success and again, we would be a lot closer to .500 which should be our immediate goal if we had put the best roster on the opening day roster, I would even say Pie is worth carrying as the 4th OF, funny how Lou Montanez getting injured make Pie acceptable as our 4th OF.
Pitching, Pitching and more Pitching, Bergesen looks great Hernandez has done fine as well so we only need three more to round out a solid rotation.
AM's biggest work may be ahead of him, with the trading deadline in a month, Huff, Mora and Sherrill seem to be his biggest bait and the offseason will require attention in obtaining a frontline starter, 3b and 1B so as we roll into spring training filling those glaring holes as well as continuing the development of the young pitchers I would strongly say we are headed in the right direction.
Finally, we need new announcers on the TV side. They are all horrible! Joe Angel and Fred Manfra far outshine the TV group (all of them)! Don't know what Brother Lo is doing but I sure wish he would resurface!

Speaking of July 04, when Mr. Jefferson noted our divine right to the pursuit of happiness, one must wonder if he saw the 2009 Orioles' season in a dream.
The fans continue to pursue the happiness of a competitive O's team although it never, ever happens. Yet amazingly, they continue to hang in there. The true first half MVP are the fans of Baltimore.
And as for that elusive happiness, for the first time in over a decade, it appears that their pursuit may actually pay off reasonably soon. Happy fourth.

Pete,
Just heard it again, our HOF announcer continues to say a tie goes to the runner, I find this tragic falsehood repeated every 3-4 weeks. He's terrible and doesn't know the rules of the game. Check it out, just google MLB rules + tie goes to the runner.
Also, as much as I like Andino and previously mentioned he was a great below the radar pickup by AM, it would be nice if our .240 hitters could lay down a bunt when required. The O's may be the worst bunting team on record and that too lays at the managers feet. Bunting is one of simplist things to do in baseball, but the art is all technique and no on this team with the exception of Melvin Mora seems to grasp it!

stop the bunting talk...if he bunted he would not have been on to score the second run.why do you people want to bunt all the time? Give it up already.
Bunting = rally killer.

Keith. I agree with you on the O's poor bunting. Mora seems to have slipped in this dept. also(along with his power and baserunning!). A guy like Jones should learn how to bunt, especially with his speed. He can add 5 -10 pts to his BA and can use this to help him fight slumps(like the one he's in now).
The Orioles are one of the worst baserunning teams in all of baseball; combine that with other mistakes/lack of bunting skill etc and it's clear that they aren't fundamentally sound, despite Trembley's vow that he would improve on that.
I know the standard response is that no one expected us to contend, etc but in my opinion, even journeymen players should be able to lay one down and run the bases properly.

Candus is good. I noticed that and appreciated that she is branching out.

i'm concerned with the 265 hitter's inability to drive in any runs.
Maybe they should take a quarter of an rbi away from you when you leave a runner in scoring position.
I know some guys who'd be seriously negative.

Isnt it crazy that Al Davis and Peter Angelos were born on the same day? Two of the worst owners right now (atleast Davis has won a championship and Coach of the Year Honors) on two franchises that used to be great.
