Adam's an All-Star
Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon chose Adam Jones as the only Orioles representative on the American League All-Star team, which does not come as a huge surprise even though Jones only leads the team in one of the Triple Crown offensive categories.
No doubt, Maddon chose him based on both his all-around performance and his own personal impression of an emerging young star who clearly is the most dynamic player on the Orioles roster.
The Orioles had other candidates. Brian Roberts entered today's games leading the league in both runs and doubles, but I think Maddon ruled him out because he doesn't smile enough. Aubrey Huff ranked eighth in the league in RBI, but first base is a tough All-Star nut to crack without big home run numbers. George Sherrill also is having a very good year -- despite Wednesday's much-debated blown save -- and looked to a lot of us like the Orioles' most likely All-Star.
Can't argue with Adam. I'm guessing he's going to make a lot of All-Star teams before he's through.

He definitely deserves to make the all-star team. He hits, plays great defense, and I believe plays hard every night. The guy has a bright future to be sure and we need to sign him up for a long-term contract.
In addition, I really hope Adam can soon take up a leadership role on the team. I think we need somebody, like the Yankees Jeter or the Red Soxs Varitech, to keep everybody focused and working together (beyond what the coach does). This team seems lost quite often. I think that is in part why we have a tough time in close games-(like last night when we melted down).

All-star appearances are such a sham in MLB. Josh Hamilton is starting??? The guy with the .240 batting average and 6 homeruns.
Of course the biggest sham to me as an O's fan is Pedroia: .291 average 3 homers 36 RBI (should never have been MVP with his numbers last year)
Compare that to the reserve Aaron Hill: .301, 20 HRs, 59 RBI

Good for Adam, but I agree w/Sam. All Star game is a total sham...including WS home field advantage tied to the winning side.

Agree that the All Star game is a sham and a first class JOKE. Who cares about it anymore? It's become as bad as the NFL all star game. Give the voting back to the managers, coaches and players. On a different note here, when are the O's going to get rid of Chris Ray? Bottom line: he STINKS. Two years now and he hasn't done squat. Can you say Jorge Julio? And this was the guy fans were screaming to be the closer a couple years ago? As far as I'm concerned the only "untouchables" on the ML roster are Jones, Markakis, Bergesen and Wieters; maybe Reimold. Everyone else is trade bait. Hopefully before the season is done we get to see Tillman, Arieta and Matusz. In closing, congratulations Adam Jones.

I've seen a lot of good players during the last sixty seasons. This kid is the real deal. Hope he can stay healthy. A lot of young kids will immulate him before he's through playing. Let's hope he can live up to the adulation. What were the Mariners thinking of when they traded him?

I hope that Jones doesn't turn into another Alex Rios. He has to learn to lay off the outside breaking ball or he's just another .260-.270 hitter without any pop.
As I was out today, I just took a look at the box score and noticed that once again the bats went silent after an early outburst.
Can anyone explain this? How many times this year have we jumped out to a decent lead and then watched helplessly as our overworked pen coughed up the lead? A few 'tack on' runs would be nice-it looks like we need to score 8-10 runs per game on most nights just to win.

Jones is great, but it would have been nice if Markakis could have gotten some live too. Come on now, Madden picks Zobrist over him. Hes just showing favoritism to his own players. There should be a limit on how many of your own players a manager can pick as reserves, or is there already? Nick couldnt even be added to the last player vote. Maybe cause we are in last? Cause I just dont get it....

Keep doing you Jonesy! Stay humble, stay focused, STAY YOU!

I'm happy for Jonesy, but part of me feels a little bad for Markakis. I think he's been our stud for the past 3 years and may have been overlooked. I'd like to see Nick and Adam in an All-star outfield next year! Josh Hamilton has been injured the whole first half. That's a joke.

Pete's reply: Apparently, if it is totally inadvertant, the umpire can let the play continue.
