What happens to Dave if O's continue to run amok?
Hey, I spent some time before the game talking to Andy MacPhail and Dave Trembley about the club's atrocious baserunning and other fundamental issues that might impact the future of the team. If you want to read my column on the subject, click here and let me know what you think.
I don't know if the recent spate of fundamental lapses will end up affecting Trembley's job security, but it certainly has gotten the attention of the front office.
Weather or not: By the way, there was another rainbow over the ballpark while the Red Sox were scoring six runs in the fourth inning, but it pretty much disappeared when the Orioles came up to bat. Draw your own conclusions.

nothing like the inspired play we get to witness every night, AM would do well to unload as much as he can at the deadline. It doesn't matter, and the answers to their issues are not here, nor will they be here for a while.
This is not respecting the game of baseball, now is it?
Like I said, 2011 before this team sniffs 75 wins...

Good work Peter, appreciate it. Still, I need to see serious improvement from this team to want DT back.

Conclusion: Can they look any worse than when they play a good team. That's your measure. Not the Nationals, nor the Mets, nor the Mariners. How do you rank when you play a good team. And the answer could not be more obvious. I don't expect them to win these games, but this type of embarrassing effort gets guys traded and fired. This team is near the bottom in ERA, and their offense is ranked 10th. Is that a good offense? NO! It's a myth.

look who has the hits tonite against 42 yr old smoltz making his second start after surgery and time off...you gotta be kidding me...

Dave doesn’t even deserve this bullcrap! The guy has never coached on the major league level until now and took the job when other former managers laughed hysterically at it. You’re not going to get a Buck Showalter type to come here and deal with this front office so get used to DT or someone like him and save your energy for the front office they are the ones that dropped the ball this season last season and well you get the point.

Shame MLB can relegate the O's as a team to the minors as they do in European Soccer. Seldom does a team reflect one member or the head of the coach staff, instead the team reflect the entire coaching staff as an entity. I'd clean house, personally.

I wonder if Andy doesn't secretly have a guy...his guy...waiting in the wings to become the manager. I'm not sure that whatever Dave does he won't be gone once the team starts showing serious and consistent progress. Andy has certainly worked with some pretty good ones that he could call on to take over.

The player's are not calling hit and runs by themselves. While no one preaches stupidity on the basepaths, you must admit DT does preach aggression on them.
Question Peter, when DT got hired he made a big production out of the team having infield practice first game of every series. Do they still do that?
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I believe they do have extra infield practice regularly, but don't know if it's the first game of each series.

WOW! Anybody see the Sox head to the dugout after 2 outs then effortlessly strike Kakes out for the 3rd? It was like they shouldnt even of had to get the 3rd out in the first place.... Might have been the most embarrassing Orioles moment in awhile..
Posted by: Howard | June 30, 2009 10:18 PM
Howard, there are far too many moments to even begin rating them. I happen to think like Mr Sinatra on that one, The Best Is Yet To Come.
Embarrassing moment that is.

Can BROB please get a hit every now and then?
Posted by: Ron | June 30, 2009 10:33 PM
Anyone remember the 80s movie Vice Versa? If not its about A mysterious oriental skull that transforms a father into his son. Could that be what happened with Pie and BROB??? If Brob keeps up this mess Pie should start a game in leadoff.... It may cause them to change back hahah kidding but srsly

Great article. It is troubling to watch us make mistake after mistake. We are just not good enough, who is really, to give up outs. It has likely cost us a few games. Good teams do not have these problems(Boston comes to mind).
While I think the mistakes might eventually cost Trembley his job, I bet he is safe through next year. He is a good manager overall. Still, the mistakes probably become a big issue next season.
In fact, I could see the mistakes being at least part of the justification for bringing in a new manager at the end of next season. The new guy hopefully being the one who could take an extremely talented team the rest of the way to the top. I just don't know who that person would be. Maybe somebody like Tom Kelly.

Salazar should play 3rd base permanently.

DT pinch hits for Mora and the guy homers...nice touch Dave. Is something wrong with Mora, did Dave get fed up with the unproductive atbats? Bueller? And if you're Mora, and they pinch hit for you there, what the heck are you thinking about now?
As the O's turn...

Pie is my new hero. Maybe what Dave did to him worked..

I would just like to know how the front office dropped the ball this season? Just because you had an over inflated expectations about this team doesn't mean the FO dropped the ball. This team wasn't going to be much better than a 75 win club this year, if that. Just because we started the year with Hendrickson and Eaton doesn't mean we went from an 85 win team to 70 win team. We were the latter even if we had started the young pitchers. But let's forget all that and just blame the front office. Forget that we accepted we had to start from scratch and start from the bottom. Let's just go from a 68 win team to a team that contends in one season.
Posted by: Bobby | June 30, 2009 11:01 PM
Bobby because they have dropped the ball for 11 season. The point was just not to blame Dave totally.
Posted by: John | June 30, 2009 11:04 PM
Hopefully this game tonight brings the O’s some confidence.
Posted by: John | June 30, 2009 11:06 PM
They've also had, what, like 6 different regimes run the player personnel side in that time too. I agree Angelos is to blame for a lot of what's happened but criticizing the current FO seem pretty silly to me, until we see what the drafts and trades produce in next couple seasons. Dave shouldn't have to take the full blame for this but we should keep this in perspective.

BROB is back baby!!!!!!!! WHOOOOOO
Posted by: John | June 30, 2009 11:13 PM
Fundamental mistakes? Any relation to the highly paid professionals not wanting to participate in regular practice drills EVERYDAY? I think the MLBP union be darned and force these guys to practice, that's the only way to improve on the fundamentals. Ask any little league coach.

salazar to the AS team!

Pete, great column. Good to see everyone's feet in the fire. Play hard and fundamentally sound, the rest will follow in the next few years.

No rainbow for the Orioles, LMAO.
Damn! Still laughing over that one.

A remarkable comeback like this is exactly the reason Trembley SHOULD NOT be fired and is the right guy for the Orioles. Look, his game management might not be the best in the world, but he looked pretty good putting in Salazar, didn't he? And let's not forget a couple of those borderline strikes he got in the 8th and 9th (finally) after waging wars against the umpires from the dugout and in the media, and quite rightly so.
Look, you can be a Francona or a Torre if you're the big boy on the block and have the money and talent and experience. Trembley is the the firey but deliberate short guy that is the exact embodiment of what the O's need to be to compete in the future: Realistic but spirited, level-headed, but ticked off when they get short changed, and at their best when others count them out.
How many times has Trembley been ejected? And how many times has been ejected when he was wrong?

The problem when the O's try to stretch a single into the double, their first base coach (Shelby) could have made it standing up, Huff and Wigginton are outs and that I am sure has been dealt with. But if they win against Boston again tonight, I am sure all will be forgotten, because last night was a great comeback, one that should be remembered for a long time.. Pinch hitting for Mora, who has been a RBI machine was interesting. You could say Trembley was just getting Salazar an at bat in a throw away game, or you can call it genius. But whatever you call it Dave made the call and in the rear view mirror it was a great call!

Trembley should not be fired. He is the perfect manager for the team. Period.
Posted by: DUrville Christopher | July 1, 2009 8:18 AM
Good article Pete, but we can't really blame Dave entirely. Mora is just a moron when it comes to running the bases. He's never been that smart about it, but he used to have the wheels to make up for poor decisions. not so much anymore. I'd say dave has done a pretty good job considering we have rookies performing, and he was able to deal with the worst rotation i've ever seen at the beginning of the year. that mix of chumps would have had most men pulling their hair out. Did anyone else ever give Eaton a shot after the o's or is he toast in the bigs?
...........................................................................................
Pete's reply: He signed with the Rockies and is pitching for their Triple-A team.
