Robert Andino: Slump buster

andinoAP.jpgBefore you give all the credit to Ty Wigginton for jumping on Derek Lowe in the first inning, consider how important Robert Andino has been in this game so far. He's made a couple of big defensive plays, and his smart swing in the second inning might just end up being the key to the Orioles holding on and winning this game.

Andino (shown leaping Brian McCann on Friday night) reached out and poked that breaking ball into right field to push the runner to third base and bring up Brian Roberts, who also did a nice job of hitting to lift a hard sinker into right field for an RBI single. Andino also bailed the O's out of another baserunning mistake after Roberts was picked off first.

The three runs in the first inning were big, of course, but the reason the Orioles are so far below .500 is because they have been hard-pressed to tack on runs after an initial rally. The two runs in the second will be the decisive runs if they break their Sunday jinx today -- just wait and see -- and Andino had a hand in both of them. He also drove in the first run of the third inning by working Lowe for a bases-loaded walk. Don't know about you, but this guy is starting to grow on me.

Pete,
Can you tell I'm bored today? I have the Sunday plan but gave my tix to my parents today.

Just to tack on, I was talking to Keith Rowe the other day, and we agreed that Andino has been doing a fantastic job filling in. Nice to see its all coming together for him today.

Pete's reply: More proof that no good deed goes unpunished.

With a few more days like this will Andino make Iturzis expendable come trade time?

this kid is definitely growing on me... and his bat seems to be improving somewhat... can't say that hayden penn trade looks so horrible.

Pete,

Your absolutely positively correct! Andino is an unsung hero, his bat and that diving play that saved a run was fantastic. Just out of curiosity, how is Hayden Penn doing? I haven't heard anything so I have to assume we did alright in that deal!

The staff at Norfolk is loaded with potential and the studs appear to be gaining the needed experience to make the show in the very bright future!

I said it after I saw him the first time this past spring.... The Andino-Penn trade was a steal.
This kid plays most facets of the game like a well-seasoned veteran and is a solid all-around baseball player.
I really do like Cesar Izturis, but I have to consider what one of the posters said above about a possible trade. Andino could easily be an everyday player right now. He can do everything Izturis can do and is younger and tougher.

I dare Dave Trembley to start Cesar Izturis at shortstop once he comes off the disabled list. I seriously think that Robert Andino has proven himself and that HE is the Orioles' new starting shortstop.

When I saw Robert Andino spell Cesar, I wasn't that impressed, but when he started to get regular playing time with Cesar out, I saw a huge improvement with his glove and now it looks like his bat is coming around. Robert deserves a lot of credit for taking this opportunity to play regularly and running with it.

It's always funny that the smallest trades are the ones that usually end up benefiting a team the most. Big props to Andy for getting a player that is actually helping the team for a guy who he basically had to cut or trade.

Forget Cesar Izturis! Robert Andino should be the Orioles starting SS

Here's my anti-Trembley comment for the day,I heard him repeat this on the pre-game show and I just had to scratch my head.He said that even before Weitrs came up he announced early in the year that Weiters would not play more than 5 games a week.As of today,Weiters has playes 3 of the last 6 games.Sorry, regardless of the result, which had very little to do with Zaun catching, except for the two fastballs he called that got crushed, that is just absurd. My biggest complaint is still and always be the fact that Trembley is so stubborn and bullheaded he refuses to consider change unless it's forced on him.And even then begrudgingly, and his reason for starting Zaun today was because he told him on Monday he would be starting today.Big whoopie do,your job is to win games not keep some has been platoon catcher happy at the risk of having your most productive starter and the number 1 prospect in baseball become untracked.I said in spring training after seeing Bergeson pitch last year that he should have made the club at the start of the year over Eaton or Hendrickson.Thank you Brad for proving me right. It's in the archives somewhere Pete,I promise, lol. How long is Montanez out for,and with Patton being promoted to Triple AAA isn't it nice to be talking about real competition for starting positions?I still think Rich Hill will get things worked out,2 walks on close calls and a bloop that should have been caught proved to be his undoing. If not, next man up.I was wrong about Baez coming out of spring training, only because they had him in a starting role, which I thought was a huge mistake, but he has been a very pleasant surprise out of the bullpen.Let's hope Huff can get untracked soon, that series in Seattle where he smoked 4 or 5 balls that would have been out anywhere else seem to have really put him in a tailspin.

Pete's reply: You cannot say with certainty that Bergesen would have pitched as well if he had started the season in the rotation. Maybe he would have, but it's not logical to look at something that's working and say, if they had done something different, it would have worked even better. I'll give you this. I think Dave is a little too structured with the lineup.

At the game yesterday and I must say Andino brings a spark to the bottom of the lineup!
This team needs the spark!

That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
