Respectfully disagree with Buck

Buck Martinez just made the case on MASN that it was a "good gamble" when Melvin Mora went for third on Ty Wigginton's single in the seventh inning, even though Gold Glove center fielder Shane Victorino was picking up the ball as Mora rounded second base.

buckmartinezmug.jpgThough I don't think any of baseball's unwritten rules are chiseled in stone (ergo, they would not be unwritten), but the one about not making the first or last out of an inning at third base trumps just about all of them when you're in a tie game in the late innings. Victorino was charging straight into the throw, but Melvin doesn't run as well as he used to and -- in this case -- the outcome does determine whether it was a good decision or not.

Forcing the action at that point does not make sense for a couple of reasons, one of which is the pitch count of opposing pitcher Cole Hamels. He was closing in on his 100th pitch at that point and would have been looking at two on and none out in that situation. Instead, he gets the free out at third and is out of the inning a couple pitches later with the double play ball.

The other reason is because I agree with Dave Trembley's desire to turn the lineup over at every opportunity. Even if the Orioles don't score after getting the first two guys on, they likely would have gotten through the No. 8 and No. 9 spots in the order if Mora doesn't gamble, along with putting another inning's worth of strain on Hamels arm and psyche.

That said, it's Father's Day and Melvin has six great kids -- including quintuplets -- so I'm giving him a pass.

Pete,
Buck and Jim just faulted Nolan Reimold for swinging at pitches twice while Brian Roberts was stealing. Now, anyone who watches the O's knows that Trembley is deeply in love with the hit and run (they've done it about 5 time already today). I would wager that Trembley had the hit and run on and Reimold was just following his manager's orders. Of course it's easier to blame the rookie rather than the manager. Do you think Nolan did anything wrong?

...........................................................................................
Pete's reply: No he didn't do anything wrong, but I don't think the hit and run was on there.

that victorino has been a pain this whole series...

I sometimes get the feeling that Mora thinks he's as fast as he was 3 years ago when he probably could have beaten that throw.

My Dad and I were having the same debate, although I think I was just debating myself. Obviously, you never want to make that 1st or 3rd out at third base. It did however take the perfect throw to barely beat him by inches.

Keep it up O's let's sweep the World champs!

Melvin just made up for it by taking that single away from Stairs in the bottom of the 9th w/ the diving stop. Great play!

Like I wrote in Connoly's bar last week, Melvin Mora is the dumbest baserunner on the Orioles. How many times has he been thrown out at third base this year? He is a veteran and should know better. Hopefully a better option for third base is available next year and the club won't have to pick up his option!

I don't know if Mora is our worst baserunner, but, I do think he is one of them...seems to me he is very often out on the bases

Bad gamble period.

Pete,

I too always wondered why the unwritten rules remained unwritten after all this time. Don't baseball people have time on down days or don't they know how to write? :)

Another thing Buck said on Saturday night was rather funny, he noted that only one person had stolen a base on Madsen, an interesting fact, except that how many times with a stopper in the game (meaning Madsen was in the lead late in the game) would a losing team try to steal? Relatively irrelevent factoid wouldn't you say? I like Buck and he's the best color guy we have on MASN for the O's but I'm with you on this one!

victorino was one of clint eastwood's better movies in the last few years. i thnk it's out on video now. oh by the way mora's baserunning this year has been horrible. his nickname should be "gus". he has gotten awfully slow. the way he's running you'd think he's carrying quints.

Mora should never have tried it for the reasons previously stated. disagree w/ Buck as usual. Also, Reimold swinging at the 0 - 1 fastball which he lined foul down the line was not a hit and run, nor was it a mistake to swing. Regardless of the jump of the baserunner, when you are already behind in the count you gotta do what you gotta do. Again, disagree with Buck. where's Jim?

I think the biggest part of Melvin's baserunning mistakes is that he hasn't figured out he isn't as fast as he once was.

Buck looks like one of Rusty Hardin’s power lawyer team…

Nice call Schmuck, Martinez is talking the company line. Mora has made more boneheaded baserunning mistakes not only this year but last year also. I like Mora but it is time for Wigginton to play 3rd every other day.

It wasn't such a bad gamble. Victorino was going the other way and still made a perfect throw to third - Kudos to him.

melvin mora's is a slow runner watch him trying to beat out a hit or stretch a base he's never even close.

i respect buck martinez very much. i think he adds insight as well as a good "dry" sense of humor to the color commentator position. i, too, was in disagreement with his comments. victorino has a gold glove and a good arm. he fielded the ball in shallow center field when mora was about to round second base. hamels was still pitching a good game at that point and giving him an out was not a good idea late in a tight ball game. agree to disagree! this would've been a much bigger deal had the o's lost. no harm no foul.

Sorry Pete, Buck was right on this one. Station-to-station baseball does not beat #1 pitchers. It was an exceptional play considering Victorino had to throw against his momentum. Having said that, previous comments are also right that Mora still thinks he has his old speed and needs to start factoring the lack of it into his baserunning decisions. I would be more upset if Oriole baserunners were gunshy because Victorino has a reputation and no one wanted to test him. Now everyone on the team knows exactly what type of fielder Victorino is and will be better able to execute against him in the future.

The third base position is one of those traditionally "power/rbi" positions that most of the contending teams strive to have. Mora will be 38 and his contract is up at the end of this season. The Orioles need to start beating the bushes to find someone else. That being said I think Mora has done a respectable job for the Orioles all these years so I say thanks for the memories but it is time to move on.

Well, we all know what happens to on air guys who criticize the O's, right? Can anyone say "Jon Miller!"

Whether it's a cardinal rule or not, it was pretty obvious from watching the play develop that Melvin had no chance of making third safely. And speaking of rules, I remember one that says, "always watch the third base coach when rounding second!"

Pete- When I saw him make that turn I knew he was gunned. The only thing at that point we could hope for was a offline throw. That being said has been previously been stated in this thread. Vic's body was going against the throw, So I have to agree with Buck that it was a good move in a tight ball game. If he is not gunned down this forum would not even been posted by you. But much respect to VIC's on the money throw with his body going in opposite direction. Regardless O's won but I do agree Melvin is going to have to make better mental baserunning decisions in future. Lets make his last year as an Oriole one to remember for good reaons. He has gave alot to this ball club
