Pregame Dave

Dave Trembley said today that he is not going to judge the performance of Koji Uehara on the basis of his pitch count, which is something of a departure from the way he seemed to be viewingUehara's previous starts. When Koji came back from the disabled list, Trembley estimated he would throw between 75-85 pitches, which made it sound like the pitch count was fairly important. Not anymore.

"I wouldn't get too wrapped up in pitch counts with Koji,'' he said. "I don't look at that with thim. I look at how hard he has to work to get outs."

What does that mean?

"I think with most pitchers, the other team's hitters tell you,'' Dave said. "He's a master of deception...of upsetting hitters' timing...Just like when the hitters tell you on Guthrie or Bergesen or whoever, when they start fouling fastballs straight to the screen and centering every pitch, that's when you know they (the pitchers) are losing it."

Injury update: Dennis Sarfate will go to the Orioles extended spring training camp on Friday for 10 days to continue his rehab program. He said today he expects to get on the mound next Wednesday.

Radio update: Don't forget to join me tonight at six for Sportsline on WBAL (1090AM). We'll talk Orioles and Ravens while we all wait to see if the O's can get tonight's game in. If you're out of signal range, go to WBAL.com and click on the "Listen Live" icon.

Hey Schmuck (he said with all due respect). I know this is a post late, but I can recall at least two instances where Pete Rose wound up on second on a walki because of a wild pitch or past ball on ball four. Those were two I saw and didn't see him much. As for Brian, late in the game Melvin wanted to go the short way for a force out at second, but Brian failed to cover. It did not hurt as Melvin was able to throw to first, but it is his job to cover and keep those options open. It was a bad game and it is understandable to have those in a very long season. Please don't think I am bashing him cause he is a big contributer and we usually go as he does, so need him to show real effort and inspire. A tough job, but he is up to it.

Pete's reply: I was here for that Melvin play and Brian was playing way off the bag. The right play was to first.

Peter,
I might be jumping the gun but, depending on what Sarfate does, is it possible that he contributes towards how expendable the club sees Baez might be?

• It is Baez's last year under contract.
• he's having a helluva year consistently in the mid-90s.
• we are actually proving to be a solid pen
• we have depth in the minors
• he won't help us to a title, but he can help another team.

For me it's a convergence of factors where we have to trade a piece (maybe Sherrill too?) to get a quality prospect back. I'm not talking a Wieters or Matusz caliber prospect. I'm talking a Reimold or Bergesen decent bet to be majorleagers type.

Pete's reply: Regardless of Sarfate's situation, I think Baez will be tradeable at midseason if he keeps pitching well.

Pete,

I was one of the posters who gripped about Roberts' lack of hustle. I apprecitate and see the value of your blog on this subject. I just think its not too much to ask for a little hustle. Yes, most of us have not given 100% every single day at work, but none of us are making 10 million a year in the worst economy in 70 years. Brian is a fan favorite and probably always will be, but just bust your a$$ on the way to first for the 14 thousand of us left who still ardently support the O's.

I know you have no control over this but I guess it is nice that the Sun can continue to layoff people and yet spend money redesigning the layout every year.

Unfortunately each redesign just seems to make things harder to find and just means I use it less and less. Too often large corporations are just clueless.

Agree totally with the last poster.Every redesign seems to have gotten less user friendly and the Sun as a whole has been clueless for a number of years.Unfortunately it's still the only game in town for now.A lot of people, including some employees I know in my own family are truly worried about just how long that will last.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
