Orioles: Will Jeremy step up?

The Orioles need Jeremy Guthrie to pick up tonight where Brad Bergesen left off on Sunday and go deep into the series opener against Mike Pelfrey the New York Mets, but it's anybody's guess whether that will happen.

We'll just have to wait and see which Jeremy Guthrie shows up. He has been struggling with his command and consistency, even as he appears to be throwing harder than he was in late April and early May.

This has been a difficult year for Guts, and I believe that has something to do with being forced into the No. 1 starter role by default. He is a nice pitcher when his head is on straight, but he hasn't established himself as an ace and he hasn't really gotten the opportunity to grow into that level of responsibility. That has to play with your head a bit, and it seems to be doing just that.

Radio, radio: Join me tonight at six on WBAL (1090 AM). We'll preview the series between the Orioles and Mets and also talk about today's activity at Ravens camp. Jamison Hensley will join me to discuss the possibility of the Ravens acquiring disgruntled receiver Brandon Marshall from the Denver Broncos. Guthrie is not, has never been, and will never be a TOR guy...at best he would fit in nicely on a staff with a clear ace...
And in regards to the Ravens, what is the deal about NFL receivers? Is it just me or does it seem that there are inordinate number of arrogant, misbehaving jerks who are in the wide receiver slots?...Let's see..Randy Moss, TO, Plaxico Burress, Chad Johnson, this guy Brandon Marshall,
etc. etc.
It seems to me in the 70s you had guys like Lynn Swann, Paul Warfield, Harold Carmichael, Drew Pearson..etc.- all professionals, not jerks at all.
In the 80s guys like Jerry Rice, Art Monk, Steve Largent, Jerry Lofton..
again...all pros, not jerks..
But now....good grief...what a bunch of prima donna, acting out narcissists.
I vote NO! as a Ravens fan to anyone where the first word to describe him in any article is "disgruntled" or "troubled."

Pete's reply: No, it's not just you. I've been wondering the same thing.

I like the new layout.

Huge game for Guts, I like the lineup as well. We could potentially switch Mora and Nolan, but Mora has been making solid contact recently.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
