Orioles: Wieters goes deep

Matt Wieters just hit his first major league home run, a 366-foot shot to left field that also scored Nolan Riemold to to break a 1-1 tie in the second inning. It came in his 14th game and 48th at-bat.

Woo Hoo #1 !! (of 1,000)

Great for the kid, and for the team. While it's never good to lose, we all know that this year is most important for player development. Even if we lose 100 games it will be worth it if players like Jones, Reimold, Wieters show they can rake at the major league level and the pitchers keep on impressing in the minors.

Only 500 or so more to go!

Any word on what the guy that ended up with the ball got for returning it???

Pete's reply: He got a signed bat and ball.

So Wieters went deep, which was great. But how about his fellow rookie Reimold showing that hustle and legging out an infield hit!

I thought that was great and kind of underscored the frustration that some of us have been feeling about Roberts. Glad to see the youthful enthusiasm, and I hope he can be an example for his elders.

June 17 is my birthday as well as the forever-anniversary of Matt Wieters first home run.

Just one more reason why women on the street will continue to confuse the two of us.

I was there. The crowd went crazy, as well as myself. It was one of the best moments I have ever been a part of.

I was at home waiting for that flyball to be caught... 366ft shot?? Schmuck likes acid...

I was there, too. When Wieters stepped in, I said aloud to my wife, "Pay attention, Hon. Your're about to see Wieters hit his first major league home run". When the ball cleared the wall and everybody jumped up, high-fiving, I said to the young boy sitting next to me, "Hey, how about that, buddy, you get to tell everyone that you were there for Wieters very first homer". He just looked up at me with these big, round eyes and said with awe, "But dude-- you CALLED it"! Made my night.

Darn, I missed his first homer! Oh well, I was there for his first triple (also his first hit) and for his first double (his second hit that game). How may catchers have ever had a triple for their 1st major league hit?

He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
