Orioles: Ninth-inning magic

Don't know if the Orioles hold on to win this game, but you have to be impressed that they staged their second ninth-inning rally in three games, coming from behind with home runs by Gregg Zaun and Brian Roberts.

Two nights ago, they beat Francisco Rodriguez to end an 0-34 drought in games they trailed this year after the eighth inning. This was just as impressive, even though the Phillies are without their lights-out closer Brad Lidge.

Happy ending complete. Go O's.

Great game in so many ways! Go O's!!!

Amazing way to get a W in hostile territory after the whole Bergy situation. Go O’s!!

as an orioles fan from philadelphia... that could not have been better.

I don't know which is better as a result of tonight...The Orioles winning or being able to laugh at all the obnoxious Phillies fans I know

I think Dave should start his press conference with the following: "I'd like to thank the guys for getting me off the hook tonight."

Wow, what a win!

"Go to war, Miss Agnes."

"It's been a good night, everybody."

All I gotta say is HOW 'BOUT THEM O's.... You know that commercial where the O's fan says that the O's have heart but "they're killing mine" Yeah that's about how I feel right now!

PETE:

where are the people bit*hing about roberts tonight?????? And tonight is my 21st bday!!!! DRINKS ON ME....THE KOOL-AID TASTES GREAT TONIGHT, DOESN'T IT?

Great win! I have to question Trembly"s lineup. Why would he take out one of his hottest right handed hitters (nothing against Luke, he's great) but it didn't make any sense. Trying to get everyone at bats on a set schedule doesn't work. Remember what Durosher said about nice guys.

I was there tonight. Otherwise i wouldn't have believed it. ORIOLES MAGIC, BABY!!!!!!!!!

now we don't have to talk about letting bergesen hit w/ bases loaded and one out OR giving Howard anything but four breaking balls in the dirt.... now we can talk about a serious ninth-inning rally IN THE CHAMPS' HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!

forgot to mention, what a game for Bergesen! The box score says 2 Ks but he made a bunch of quality hitters look SILLY on some swings. and no shame in those doubles to rollins/utley in the seventh. a little better scouting and at least one of those would've been an out

The interleague games have proven one thing to me. The NL with no DH--SUCKS.. It's a boring game with pitchers wasting a time at bat. Also most NL pitchers are afraid of being traded to the AL (Peavy and probably others). Bergy could have had a easy win if he didn't have to waste his time batting. Thank God we're in the AL East.

Why would Trembley be off the hook? I don't see where he made a mistake? You leave Bergy in at that point in the game - unless of course you get the benefit of seeing a 5 spot the next inning. Please don't be a second guesser everytine something goes wrong...you do not want to go to the bullpen when your starter (and best pitcher the last month) is throwing a shutout with a 3-0 lead...as for Roberts - this does not get him off the hook - you do not get off the hook until you show some hustle on a consistent basis - at least not my hook...he's a fun player to watch - and a great leadoff guy...but it's very hard to watch him dog it...and he's been dogging it. great won for the franchise that is finally turning it around - at some point peter the national media will pick-up on this? The are 7 less than the Yanks in the standings...all they talked about tonight was the Phillies closer problems---very frustrating watching the exec. of the year get no love from the national media...our day is coming though.

Gary - it was 2-0 when Bergy hit in the seventh. I just don't see how you bypass a chance to open up a tight game on the road like that. I was second-guessing it well before the five spot. How 'bout pinch-hitting Wieters there?

So it was 2-0 Will - you still don't take your pitcher out. They have issues in the 7th inning - why would you ever take him out unless he was over 100 pitches? it's hindsight pure and simple...he did the right thing by leaving him in win or lose...beside he wasn't conceding the inning by letting him hit - they still scored another run? He also would not have had Salazar on the bench for later in the game - and he delivered a big pinch hit.

Gary ,you amaze me,you defend Trembley whose poor mamaging from the opening line up to the poor pitching decisions to leave Bergeson in too long, and then to pitch to Howard with 1st baseopen and the pitcher's spot coming up and then still bash Roberts who hits the game winning homerun that gets him off the hook. He's a horrible manager, always will be,and if we win it's in spite of what he does,or because he didn't have to do anything.I think Roberts should have been called out for his lack of hustle and who's responsibility is that? The manager's.Is it ever going to happen? Not with Trembley here. He's proven it for the last two years.Enough said.

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Burt. Second base was open, not first base. Big, big difference.

I never hammer Roberts for his talent - i hammeded him for his lack of hustle - he's a great player, and i like him a lot...but when he loafs he should be called on it...and hitting a home run doesn't excuse being lazy with a 10 million dollar contract (or any contract for that matter)...It's jjsut to easy to blame the manager...Baez is a sinker bapper---Howard was sick - and since when does a manager walk the go ahead run into scoring position???? Are you KIDDING! You're all just second guessers and making up ridiculous excuses to blame the manager - I blame trembley for some things - but I try and be reasonable about it---you find me one baseball person who walks the go ahead run to 2nd for a .279 hitter who has the flu? And the pitcher spot means a pinch hitter, certainly not a pitcher....I am not sure I have EVER seen the t...I blame Baez - not Trebley.

Not everything the manager does will please everyone. I wondered about leaving Bergeson to bat with the bases loaded, however he was pitching well and had a pitch count in the low seventies. Trembley pulled him fairly quickly. You have to believe in your pitcher in that situation.
I have wondered about the team's heart before, but they are showing good signs. This was a good win for a young team. Maybe this is something that will push them towards a .500 season. That would be positive.

I totally agree with you Gary. The guy was in the hospital and it's a safe bet to think he's not feeling it when he gets up to the plate. Bad pitch for sure though. Last I saw Trembley was on the bench and not on the mound for that play.

You also leave the kid in there because you've coddled him in previous games and at some point you need to test his mettle. Plus he was pitching a shutout and had shown the ability to pitch late in his last few starts. If you pull him and we win 2-0, how many people jump on DT for being premature like they have before??

As for calling out BRob, how does that end up working usually? You handle it like a man and talk to him in your office and expect him as a man to handle it. Have you been in DT's office this whole season? Do you know what he's said and hasn't said? Plus, don't forget there is a GM who probably wouldn't want to see DT take it on himself to ruin the relationship between the team and a $40 mil investment. Not to mention he's an owner's boy. Get real.

Same goes for all the hit-and-runs that people want to grill him for. Did some not work out? Sure. Do you think he'd be told not to do it as much if AM had an issue with how the team was coached? This is a practice year, there's no penant chase. You run plays a little differently when you're trying to grow someone's skillset as opposed to chasing championships. If he does it in 2011, then complain.

Really Pete? Lights out closer? Have you watched Lidge at all this year :P. He's lost whatever he had last year. It seems to be a trend with him...after a World Series year, implode.

Frankly I was praying the O's would have had a chance to face Lidge in a game like this, but I'm glad they got to Madsen.

Keep it up, gents!

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Lidge is on the DL, last time I looked.

The whole problem is the O's don't have enough bridge relivers on this team Baez and Albers are the only two guys. The should have kept Hernandez and made him a middle reliever also to bridge to Johnson/Sherill.Hendrickson and Castillo are a joke.

Now Hernandez is demoralized from being demoted and getting raked at Norfolk.

Trembley should be thanking B-Rob
He should have hit For Bergeson.
Has he ever seen a National League Game Dave. With the bases loaded and 1 out and Professional Hitters on the bench, you Do it. I don't bash him much, but that was a mistake

Pete,

You know I have never been a Trembley apologist, but doesn't anyon on his staff know how to manage in the National League? Yeah they won, but a blind squirrel finds and accorn every once in a while too! We had Matt Wieters sitting on the bench, a left handed hitter (switch hitter actually) but batted a right handed hitter??????????????

On another note that seems to have been lost Andino played a great game both in the field and timely in his hits. Finally I would suggest moving Koji to the pen to add depth in our bridge bullpen which will only make the youngsters stronger as they come up!

I know Lidge is on the DL Pete, but are you saying his 0-3, 7.27 ERA, 13/19 SvO stat line is "lights out"?

That was my point. He's been absolutely terrible this year.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Chris. I concede the point. I was talking about the "old" Brad Lidge before he started stinking it up.
