Orioles: Mora bruised

Melvin Mora just got hit on the right hand by a pitch and has spent several minutes with trainer Richie Bancells, but he's going to stay in the game. He is not, however, going to get first base, since home plate umpire Jeff Kellogg ruled he was swinging when he got hit by the pitch and was out on strikes.

Manager Dave Trembley argued with Kellogg and had to hold Mora away from the umpire. It really looked like Melvin was trying to get thrown out of the game, but Trembley finally steered him back to the dugout.

Melvin got a bad break on that call. How can the ump say if hit him when it was such a hard ground ball over toward the dugout. I think the fact that it took so long to make the call (first base ump made the suggestion 3 minutes later), no one really had a recollection of what the ball did. The fact that they let Dave argue for so long tells you they were not real certain of their call.

Is anyone else as sick of Melvin Mora as I am? First, he pulls that jacka-- routine trying to get thrown out of the game in the second inning. Then he's standing 5 feet away from Robert Andino (who is properly covering third base) on the David Wright single in the top of the fourth and fails to get in position to cut off Reimold's throw from left field. Add in his constant boneheaded baserunning blunders, and I, for one, have had enough of this guy. Mora epitomizes the Orioles' losing brand of baseball this decade.

Mora should not be playing regularly at third but I'm afraid we are stuck with him for the rest of the year. Trembley knows if he doesn't play every day he will have an even bigger scow on his face and Trembley doesn't want that. How can you swing at a ball that hits you? Hopefully theyt won't bring him back next year but the way the Zero's operate who knows.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
