Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in
The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

This kid brings up some good points about the mental aspect of the game. Its impressive to see him understand that aspect of the game at such a young age. Alot of 18 year olds with his kind of talent probably assume pitching at the next level will be as easy as it was in high school so its good to see Hobgood knows the importance of working hard on both his pysical and mental skills. Hopefully Arrieta, Tillman, Patton, Matsuz, etc... have this kind of approach as well!

Clemens-esque. We'll see him in 2012.

I can put up with the lousy base running and errors but do we have to put up with seeing that obnoxious smirkey chubby face of Dan Random Rodricks the libertard everytime we pop on to the Sun website? Please spare us the migraines.

this is a crapshoot. he is very young. I wouldnt bet on him being a star, but I very much appreciate his good attitude and his eagerness to sign. I would very much resent a player who chooses the Boras route and will be holding out for every last dollar. you can try to bleed a team for every last dollar if you would like, but I think you pay a price for that, you lose goodwill and support. it puts more pressure on you. so, i respect matt hobgood and he has my support and i wish him well.

I just hope Hobgood turns out to better than Adam Loewen, who was never as good as advertised. As far as the O's go, I'm hoping unlike the last several seasons they finish strong instead of laying down in the final two months. It may only add up to 70 wins or so again unfortunately, but let's see a team showing real promise toward the end of the season.

Go Hobgood!
Go Riverside County!

Wow! This kind overhype and BS is why we get so mad when they fail or get hurt….
For the love of god can’t the O’s just sign 1 proven and talented veteran pitcher to aide the rooks and help solidify our staff? 1??

Jon, I don't think there was enough of a body of work from Loewen at the major league level to say whether he was or wasn't as good as advertised. He simply was on the DL too much of the time to know for sure.

Ken,
It doesn't matter if Pedro was better then Eaton or not. That wasn't the point. The point was Pedro is a shadow of his former self, and was asking for 5million. Eaton cost the major league minimum and whether he contributed or not, he won a ring last year.
I don't see everyone's obsession with a veteran starter. It is wasted money. We weren't going to win this year no matter how many veteran starters we signed, and we'd only be blocking spots.
Bergesen might still be in the minors if signed all these "veterans" you and Jon are so pressed on.
Andy passing on Pedro was the right move in every sense. Who cares that people are scouting Pedro now? Let them make the bad move that MacPhail was able to dodge.

Pete's reply: In reality, Pedro was looking for $9 million. Trivia challenge: Who signed him?

Can this kid play 3rd base????? He is a brute.
The first thing i would do is assign him a personal trainer, and make sure he starts eating right.
Good luck kid....

Seems like a pretty good kid, but it's probably going to take him a while to get to Baltimore. Pete, have you heard where he's going to start out? Alberdeen? Bluefield?

Pete's reply: Bluefield.
