Beyond belief
This was a throwaway game an hour ago and now it could end up at the top of the list of the greatest comeback victories in Orioles history. Nick Markakis's two-run double off Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon has put the game in the left hand of George Sherrill.
This game was 10-1 two innings ago.
What else is there to say?
If this holds up, it will be the first time in the franchise's 55-year history that the O's have come back from more than eight runs behind to win. The O's came back from an eight-run deficit in 1956. It was also the first blown save opportunity by Papelbon in 21 opportunities against the Orioles.

Pete... Gary Thorne was doing his best to jinx it... including calling it an amazingly amazing comeback before we even were close to a lead (he started that talk at 10-6)...
Now he's right... but I was ready to break his face through my tv...
Wow. Glad I turned this game back on...understatement.

This Ump has to be one of the worst I've seen this year.
Nick Markakis > crappy umpires
Go O's!

BOOMSHAKALAKA!!!! GRAMPA BAY GOES DOWN!!! I don’t care if the O’s lose every game from here on out just to do something like this to the Sox haha

It may only be one game.
It may only be for one night.
But omg, does it feel good to stick it up the nose of Red Sox Nation.
Sideways.

Mora just finished writing himself a permanent ticket to the bench or a release as far as I’m concerned.

What an amazing win tonight! And Youkilis arm is still going to be hurting in 12 hours! I just hope Adam Jones will be ok! Also the umpires for this series might be on the red sox payroll.

Incredible win!!!! I'm so glad my first game of the season to attend was last night and not tonight!!! -_-

way back when, the o's had a big comeback against the jays at the skydome, do you remember any particulars? (if memory serves me corectly, roberto alomar (playing for toronto at the time) had to be taken out of the game because of a death threat?)

Pete, something is wrong with your blog. Nobody has called for Trembley's head in the comments. I'm sure he did something tonight to warrant getting fired.

Dan: I think one commenter said it best a while ago when they called Thorne a set of "hired vocal cords". The guy's got nothing between the ears. Thoughts start at his eyes and go straight to his mouth without any brain involvement.
Does anyone else notice that 95% of pitches that miss when Thorne is broadcasting are either inside or outside? Sherrill was bouncing them in the dirt and he was calling them "outside".
Robert: Sticking it sideways to RS Nation is a grand idea... I'd just pick a better spot to stick it than their nose.....
Great team win!

PETE:
Actually, it was NOT the biggest comeback in franchise history. In 1936, when we The St. Louis Browns, we overcame an even bigger deficit to win a game. It is the biggest comeback SINCE WE MOVED from St. Louis to Baltimore in 1954.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: True, but the St. Louis Browns were behind by nine runs every night, so that doesn't count. Just kidding. You are correct. Got to call it the biggest comeback in Orioles team history.

OFFNY,
That's why he said "Biggest Comeback in the O's 55 year history. They were not the Orioles in 1936, they were the Browns.
Posted by: Jeff | July 1, 2009 6:50 AM
JEFF: READ what he wrote:
"If this holds up, it will be the first time in the franchise's 55-year history."
THE FRANCHISES' history. That is what he said. And that IS NOT true. The franchise has been around since 1901. Thr Browns' comeback in 1936 was bigger.

Jeff: I heard that, but sometimes my little girl reads this blog over my shoulder. :)
Man, 12 hours later, it still feels good!!
