Berken: No escape

Jason Berken has been walking a tightrope all night, and he just dropped his balance bar. J.D. Drew, who tripled to lead off the game and scored the first Red Sox run, just hit a towering home run to center field to give Jon Lester and Boston a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Berken has not won a game since his major league debut against the Toronto Blue Jays, and it appears that won't change tonight. He just got out of the fourth because Adam Jones went over the fence to rob Kevin Youkilis of what would have been the second home run of the inning. That came on Berken's 87th pitch of the game, but it looks like he'll come out for the fifth.

It's still early, but I'd have to be the house that Lester improves to 8-0 lifetime against the O's tonight. He just threw his 40th pitch, so he could be out there until the end.

I know you are kind of a big man Peter, but you are not as big as Lester's house I'm pretty sure....

Lester absolutely owns us.

Wigginton and Mora just got embarrassed.

Wieters is about to.

And Gary Thorne is shockingly awful as a play by play guy.

Hey Pete you see BROB get pissed and toss the bat like a baby WTF.. Maybe we do need to play little league coach.... something is rotten in Denmark..

Pete's reply: I thought it was a bad call, so I'm not sure I blame him.

Good to see Brian angry at the bad call by Jerry Layne on strike 3 with two on. Would have been nice to see Dave come out and join in, too. Sure, he would get thrown out. Do it for the team.

Barry,

Its never BR's fault......

Ron--What I'm saying is that it was a bad call, the Birds would have had the bases loaded. I wanted Trembley out there in Layne's face. Go get thrown out and show the team you care.

First people complain and say that B-Rob doesn't care, then those same people complain when he's frustrated with a bad call. Players who don't care don't argue with calls! Some of us O's fans are turning into Philly fans at an alarmingly fast rate.

Mikey,

Nothing wrong with Philly fans or Philly journalists for that matter, they expect winners and tell it like it is!

No Keith, actually they are overly-reactionary fans. Probably the kind of folks that never played sports and went on a tough streak. I don't care who you are, you go through spells. Brian Roberts is still putting up numbers, and really always has. He's been bad lately, not that debatable. But the guys a good pro, and I'd bet my house he gets hot sooner than later. Speaking of betting the house, what's up with your grammar/spelling Schmuck? Two posts in a row!

I live in philly (but will always be an o’s fan). Careful with your philly fan comment. Outside journalists have painted this picture of these rabid-drunk-foul mouthed-bad guys when in actuality (like every city) it’s a handful of knuckle heads. On the other hand, as an eagle fan we expect nothing but a SB victory. That is what we pay for and we are just more vocal about it (and we have the likes of south jersey backing us up!). I do believe the O’s are on the right track and have the right pieces in place. But as a fan we have every right to criticize every play until they win the WS. That’s why there are message boards, talk radio, etc. Think about it, you don’t go to a restaurant, have your meal come out undercooked and then say to yourself “well, by 2012 they should figure out how to cook it right” – No, you complain to Pete!

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
