Answering the Wiggy question

If you're wondering why Ty Wigginton wasn't in the starting lineup tonight after hitting a pair of home runs in Sunday's 11-run performance, you're not alone, though I didn't really start thinking about it until Melvin bounced into that double play a few minutes ago.

Dan Connolly already weighed in on the subject before the game, so you might want to take a look at his Orioles notebook here.

mora hitting fifth...i'm not a trembly basher but he's gotta wake up on that one. He's loyal to a fault. He'll learn when it costs him his job.

unreal...way to hustle again brian...

don't be swayed by a couple of wins against a sinking ship known as the braves...tonight is typical Oriole magic.
This is a really bad team.
Errors. Untimely hitting. Untimely pitching. Is the worst over? said the headline. C'mon, you're kidding, right?
Excepting Bergeson and Reimold, there's very little to be upbeat about.
The best to hope for is decent return on the players who will hopefully be dealt.
And a continued year-end housecleaning. See I don't care if they don't have a replacement for Mora next year. Why would that matter to a rebuilding team?

Brian Roberts is starting to remind me of MiguelTejada right before he left.Lackadasical on the basebaths and in the field, undisciplined at the plate and mostly just looks like he would rather be somewhere else.Probably cost us 5 runs tonight in the field and swung at two balls around his ankles with the bases loaded.Time to trade him before he pulls a Melvin Mora and just out flat disappears. And the bogus call on Melvin's swing and the home plate umpires strike zone didn't help much.Get rid of Gutherie too,not because I don't like him but because he needs a new enviroment where they actually play defense behind him and score him some runs, and may be worth a few prospects. And alberto Castillo looks like the dark version of Jamie Walker, can't get any lefties out throwing 86 -88 miles an hour, and 33 years old.Go youth movement. When's Geritol night?Melvin looks horrible at the plate.Reimold and Weiters both had some good at bats,I turned the game off after we went down 6-2.We're not coming back from that, sorry.Trembley needs to go!

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Burt, I think you've traded or released just about everybody on the team at some point this season. Do you like any of the veteran players?

I wondered about it for 30 seconds til I remembered who makes up the lineup cards.Trembley will probably say he told Melvin last Wed. that he would be starting today. The unraveling has started.Trade Roberts,Gutherie and Huff, get younger and maybe 2011 might look like a .500 team if Trembley is gone. And I like Huff but the longer he stays the less value he is going to have.

Mora should no way be batting 5th...its so obvious! Put him in the 7th or 8th slot till he gets it together (if he does at all this year) then put Scott and Reimold in the 5/6 slot.

Wow - Wigginton hits 2 in a blowout and you're ready to put him in the HOF. This guy is the biggest waste of space on the roster but I'm sure the team caterer is happy. How we kept this guy and cut Gomez is beyond me. You can always count on big Ty to pop-up or K with RISP when game is close and hit weak leadoff single to keep his .230 average in tact later in game.

Pete,if you read what I said,I mentioned the fact that I like both Huff and Gutherie.I also said a couple days ago that I liked Baez and that I was wrong about him earlier in the year, but that was when they were trying to use him as a starter.I think Gutherie is snakebit at this point and everytime something happens like last night he has to think here we go again.Castillo has not impressed me at all.Mora is still good in the field but looks horrible at the plate.Huff has done a very good job defensively at 1st and will probably end up with 100 RBI's come the end of the year. But Roberts has been jogging to first base all year, and it will soon start to have a negativeeffect on the rest of the young players,in my opinion.I heard some boos last night when he did it,so some of the fan base is starting to recognie it as well.I think Rich Hill will get hisstuff together,I don't think Koji ismore than a 5 inning pitcher,Hendrickson is exactly what he has always been,a 5.00+ ERA pitcher who is okay some nights and not others.I like Luke Scott alot, just sayingif rebuilding is your goal, his trade value will never be higher than it is right now.Andino has really surprise me with his defense,as good if not better than Izturis,at least so far this year. What moves do we make when Izturis comes back,I'm assuming Salazar goes back down.So please don't put words in my mouth and misquote what I say.I'm more than capable of being wrong and putting my own foot in my mouth myself, thank you very much!Finaaly I spoke earlier in the year before Texiera signed with the Yankees that I though for the money Huff was more than adequate at fiirst and that money should be spent much better on pitching.Unfortunately I meant good pitching, and I'm still under the belief that Pedro Martinez would help this club.Unfortunately I'm not sure if he would want to come here.We have a solid nucleus but with Melvin batting fifth, more Trembley stubborness, and Weiters not quite finding hisstroke at the plate, though it looks like he's starting to,and Wigginton not being used correctly, check out his last 2 years,we will continue to lave runners on base at an alarming rate.Wigginton had 2 very good years in the NL,unfortunately we don't play that style of baseball. And to sit a man after he has two HR's is absurd,no questions asked.I like Albers and Bass and Sherrill, was not clamoring for his head even when he was strugling, even said I thought he would get it back together.Does that about cover it for the older players?Zaun is what he is,a decent backup catcher who hasfailed to hit the way he did in recent years. My dad said it seems like we sometimes get players who come here to watch their careers die,i.e. Belle,Davis,Eaton,Kline,Walker, even though he gave us one good year,Hendrickson,Zaun, etc, etc.I see a glimpse of optimism, but don't think we're even close yet.We still have no clue what Salazar can do,he's playedtwo games, that's ridiculous.Of all the players I mentioned,I like Huff the most becauseI think we could move him to third or first ifsomething happens to Mora, and I just like his enthusiasm for the game.At least he tried to make the play on the popout, unlike BRob,who should have made the play, and who has made that play many times before.Hope I made myself clear this time.If not feel free to question me and I'll try again.

Wouldn't one think that had Mora tried to bunt for a base hit (in the fifith?) rather grounding into a double play, ( against a sinker ball pitcher), that would have been a better plan to keep the rally going and get back into the game?....two runs already in, no outs man on first........

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I suppose they could have done that, but the bunt generally isn't used to push along a runner who wouldn't tie the score, give you the lead or pad a lead. They were two runs down, so that would not be considered fundamentally sound.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
