Always look on the bright side

foofycheeseburgerAP.jpgI knew if I looked hard enough I could find a silver lining to this horrible economic recession, and this is it: There is a new trend toward regular food at fancy weddings, both because real people like me like real food and because rich people don't want to flaunt their wealth during this time of great economic stress for their fellow Americans.

Take a look at this article from the New York Times, but don't drool on your laptop. It looks like I'll be crashing a few fancy weddings this summer. It appears the cheeseburger has become acceptable wedding fare at even the toniest receptions.

Credit line: I was referred to this story by WBAL producer and fill-in talkshow host Greg Bianco, who thinks cheeseburgers are disgusting. He'll be hosting my show next Wednesday night.

Shout out: Also hope this finds its way to a former blog participant named Danny, who wrote in recently to say that he would no longer be stopping by because I posted a blog entry about cheeseburgers when I should have been blogging Delmarva Shorebirds stats or something. I told him that some days I wake up hungry and just can't help myself.

I love when you do food entries. Nothing like hearing from an expert on a subject :-)

My wife and I just had our wedding reception catered by Chickie and Pete's from South Philly.

I highly recommend them, recession or not. We should've invited you!

Pete's reply: Sorry I missed that. Definitely my kind of wedding -- which is any wedding I don't have to finance.

Good try. It was actually catered by Chickie's Italian Deli, a completely different place.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Still sounds pretty good. I hope he didn't blow his Father's Day gift.

Can never get it right can we, Pete? And I think the double comment counts as nagging.

p.s. - we got box seats to O's -Phils this Sunday as a wedding gift.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Can't blame Julie for the double post. Sometimes the software doesn't respond fast enough. Nice gift. I predict an Adam Jones home run on Sunday.

Say Pete,

My wife and I just received Food Channel's Bobby Flay's new cookbook on burgers, fries and shakes.

There is a California (it is also referred to as the LA burger) burger that is excellent. It uses a homemade avacado relish.

And for your "Danny" blogger, what does he think has gotten us thru 11 years of losing...yeah, hot dogs and burgers.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I have to tell you, though I am a native Californian, I am morally opposed to Avocado on a burger.

Pete,

Saying goodbye to my parents in Phoenix today stunk. Most emotional experience of my life. Seriously, I am bummed, but Milwaukee is very pretty this time of year.

Remember how many "hardcore" and "diehard" O's fans were ripping Mac"fail" for his Penn for Andino swap? Fortunately for us it was just another steal for Andy, though I feel horribly for Penn who was demoted after a wild outing raising his ERA to an unlucky 7.77

I still think this team is going to win 65-69 games this year, but the fact is I can NOW understand and see what a team that is about to the turn the corner looks like. We really do have all the pieces, and now finally I think they will be put in place just in time for the 2010 season.

Pete,

To change the subject, I checked out some New York columns today, and a number of folks are talking about Huff being traded to the Mets before 7/31 deadline. Unless we get a real sweetheat deal, I say Huff will be better for the O's for another couple years. What do you think?

That's one good looking burger in that photo! Who doesn't like cheeseburgers? Vegetarians? Sheez. HITLER was a vegetarian, nuff said.As you once quipped, if God hadn't meant us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of meat! (Of course, it would be nice if you didn't have to take out a loan and refinance your mortgage to afford a burger at the Yard!)

Pete, you have every right to talk about food on sports chat.I mean look at Babe Ruth andBoog Poweel, they knew how to eat.And they show hot dog and pie eating contests on ESPN all the time.If it's any consolation I wake up hungry every day, lol. And remain thankful thatI have a roof over my headand something to eat. There have been times lately when it's Ramen noodles and grilled cheese, but there's millions of people who wish they had that to eat everyday.

ummmm , burgers .

Burt from Essex - I hear ya' brother !

People need to stop dogging Robers, everybody expects him to be perfect every game. It's a long grueling season and he doesn't get many days off..Maybe today.

Totally sucks Bergy didn't get a win last night and had to eat a couple inherited runners to score. I've been saying for weeks they should have kept Hernandez for middle relief and dumped Hendrickson. They're just riding Baez's back too hard.

They're saying after the game baez was supposed to pitch around Howard and he got too much of the plate.
I;m happy the Nats are turning things around.Willie Haris with a walk off last night. Tell me again why we traded him for Chris Singleton.lol

Pete there's this thing going around about changing the CY Young award for a Satchel Paige Award. Interesting fodder for a story?

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Well, that would surprise me. I don't see that as being a serious possibility.

Pete's reply: Sorry, I've never heard of that happening. I'll have to check with the tech people. It might be that JB is a really common commenter name all over the site, though I haven't seen any here. Thanks for reading. We'll get it straightened out. You could try not including your email and see what happens, or drop the periods after your initials.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
