Wieters' personal first-ball ceremony
Matt Wieters, as expected, got a very nice ovation from the late-arriving crowd when he headed for home plate and lined up with the four umpires for the National Anthem. It didn't take him long to get involved in the action.
Tigers leadoff hitter Josh Anderson tested him immediately, laying down a bunt in front of the plate, but Wieters pounced on it and made a perfect throw to record an assist on the first out of his first major league game. Nice.
Meanwhile, Brad Bergesen has opened with a pair of scoreless innings and Wieters is scheduled to come up third in the bottom of the second inning.
Instant update: Wieters just got a loud and long standing ovation when he came to the plate for his first at-bat with two runners on base, but didn't seem the least bit distracted. He fell behind on the count to Dontrelle Willis before lining out to right field.

This is great!
Wieters could go 0/4, Bergeson could throw a complete game shutout, the O's could hit 6 HR and win 14-0...and headlines will read "O's win in Wieters debut!" or "Wieters debut leads to O's win!"
Welcome to Baltimore, Mr. Savior...err, I mean Wieters.

Pete ,
Off topic but since you proclaimed yourself "Defender of the Cat" you need to look at this.

peter, a local sportstalk station mentioned Mora and Huff are not happy with the Wieters hype...what's thier problem?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think Huff was telling the reporters to let the kid breathe. I didn't hear anything from Melvin, so I don't know.

Just a ? Does any one know if Luke Scott can play 1st base?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: It has been discussed. Don't know if that's in his future or not.

Matt Weiters once took an 0-fer just to know what it felt like.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Pete's reply: I think that's one of the most inspired ad campaigns in awhile. I've considered switching to Dos Equis because of it -- from Diet Dr. Pepper, of course.

Ooooo-4...only time will tell and we have time-right?! (a slow start is expected until he adjusts...and he will adjust)
Good game BB. Hope we continue to take it easy with the young guns and not over work them in order to prevent injuries. We need to think long term with these pitchers.

Why did the Orioles "Brain Trust" wait so long?
I like what is happening, but come on--what kind of crap has this been? Why were the fans made to suffer through a 16-25 record before bringing in the young stars?
Why did we wait for Weiters? Why were we braying for Bergeson, while McPhail flailed with failing fools?
Maybe the team could have a 5-10 game differential in wins while we waited for Eaton, Hendrickson, and the parade of pretend pitchers with their plethora of pathetic plastic performances (how's that for an alliteration?)
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Well, if you assume they would have had the same success under another timetable, I guess you can blast Andy. I am from the "it seems to have worked" school. We'll never know if those young guys would have done as well if they had come right up.

Peter, update on the bandwagon. We had so many kids waving student ID cards jumping on the wagon we had to ask some of the band members to relinquish their seats. We started with "Tuba Guy". He's skinny but the tuba takes up two seats. Then it was the flautist, "Wide Load". He takes up three seats, the flute he puts in his pocket. If this keeps up we are going to rent a couple more wagons. There's this old vegetable-fruit man says he has a couple of carts from the sixties he can let us have cheap. Giddyup, Go O's !

Well it was a great game. It seems that a new tide has arrived in Baltimore. As a longtime fan (43yrs.) all I want to do is cry. Happiness is a wonderful thing. I have to agree with Rick Dempsey, Matt Wieters is only going to make everyone around him better. As you well know, the enthusiasm of these kids is like a virus-very contagious. Its just great.
After the rape and plunder of years past, all I can say is I hope Andy McPhail stays with the Orioles for a long, long time.

Weiters was 0..fer but still had a great game. How many catchers this season have taken a starter through 8 complete innings? Calling such a game is every bit as important as the offense. The hits will come. The Orioles are hot because they're young and having fun. There will be the obvious ups and downs but this youth movement is a kick to watch. Moving Ray out was right on. Deadwood dogs the team and fans. Anyone else dogging this club now should go the same route. Remember, there are about 5 or 6 other young pitchers ready for the show. There ain't no tomorrow....live in the moment. Let the kids play!! McPhail's dividends are starting to spin some coin.

If we're going to be fair-minded on these blogs, we ought to be demanding the O's send Wieters back to Norfolk, if not put him on waivers. He's 0-for-4 in his debut, and that's about as much of a fair chance as we gave Pie. Sure, we were right about Felix, but we didn't know that back then, any more than we can be sure Matt will be a bust now that he's batting .000 for his Orioles career.

Pete,
What a great night of baseball! Obviously it would have been Nirvana had Matt hit a tater but the big picture is looking much brighter. The O's are on a very nice streak winning 5 in a row, 6 of 7 and looking like a professional team that people will want to watch! Luke Scott sure is playing like he's making up for lost time on the DL and this young pitching staff is showing they have the potential to be the corp of our team for the future. There will be ups and downs, but just watching what could be one, if not the best all around outfield of youngsters, our new and improved pitching staff and the potential of Matt Wieters have made the O's MUST SEE TV! Nice crowd tonight and the Warehouse has not put a team on the field deserving of the fine fans on Baltimore!

Part of Scott's success is they have put someone behind him in the lineup that can hit.

Tonight will be a good test for this offense. Verlander is 5-0 with a below 1.00 era in his last several shows. If the O's beat this guy it will be an eye opener.
