Wieters arrives
Matt Wieters is here and he's already had his first taste of the major league media blitz that will attend his every move in tonight's major league debut, but he didn't seem to have a problem with it when he met with the media about an hour ago.
“No, I am actually pretty excited to get playing tonight,” he said. “Having the past two days off to sit back and think about it, it’s exciting to get in this clubhouse and get to see some of the guys that I haven’t seen since spring training or even some of the guys you just saw a couple days ago. It’s a new team, but it’s a bunch of familiar faces.”
Wieters is in the starting lineup, batting seventh, ahead of left fielder Nolan Reimold, who should help him get a few good pitches from Detroit Tigers left-hander Dontrelle Willis.
“I’ve dreamed about making my debut ever since I was little,” Wieters said. “It’s going to be fun, especially once I get to actually play in a game.”
Here are tonight's lineups:
Tigers
Josh Anderson LF
Placido Polanco 2B
Magglio Ordonez DH
Miguel Cabrera 1B
Curtis Granderson CF
Brandon Inge 3B
Clete Thomas RF
Gerald Laird C
Adam Everett SS

Orioles
Brian Roberts 2B
Adam Jones CF
Nick Markakis RF
Aubrey Huff 1B
Melvin Mora 3B
Luke Scott DH
Matt Wieters C

Man, that's one good looking lineup the Orioles have tonight. With these hitters, and some decent starting pitching, the future is looking bright!

Where is this Wieters puppet commercial I'm hearing about? Anyone have a link?

Too bad Reimold isn't an Aussie. Batting eighth, he'd be "Thunder Down Under." Nice to have some pop in the lineup's nether regions.

Honestly, it is frightening to think what this lineup could do with decent starting pitching behind us....

Is the media contingent larger than the one that follows Koji around?

Pete's reply: Maybe a little, but only today.

Aside from minor tinkering with the order, I can see this lineup being the regular O's line up for the long term. Now all we need is to finalize the pitching rotation, but I can wait. The young guys that have been brought need to get their feet wet, before the big three arrive.

Any delay to tonight's start time?

Pete's reply: Looks like it. Raining pretty hard right now.

Wieters, Reimold, Izturis sure beats Zaun, Pie, Izturis. Reimold has to be the best No. 8 hitter in baseball tonight.

Pete,
For what it is worth, here is an image that I can't get out of my head:
In the movie "The Scout", Brandon Fraser plays Steve Nebraska. He has been described as the greatest baseball player of all time and he is carried onto the field on a portable throne (at least that's what I think it's called) by a dozen strong men to the standing ovation of the entire crowd. Trumpets sound and doves are released!
So, does art imitate life in this case? And does Wieters imitate Steve Nebraska?
(For those who don't know the movie, Nebraska eventually pitches a perfect game throwing 81 strikes in a row, striking out 27 batters and hitting the game winning home run.)
So Pete, do you see any thrones in the locker room?
Mark

Pete's reply: Only in the shower room.

Howard took the words right out of my mouth. That is a really good looking "Wonder Bread" lineup (no holes, as Rene Gonzales used to say), especially with Izturis' bat showing signs of life. Four guys aged 25 and under, not to mention the pitcher.
The future is here. I've been disappointed by the farm system in the past, duped by the Rileys, Pickerings, Loewens, and Penns. But this time around, I am a believer. Having this many legit prospects at one time is amazing. Wieters is icing on the cake. Reimold's swing is beautiful. I loved watching Hernandez last night (haven't seen that many swings and misses since Bedard left town).
Now let's enjoy this for a few months (and stay patient with their ups and downs) until August and September when thenext batch (Tillman, Snyder, and Arrieta) arrives.

Pete,
I've got tickets for tonight, but I'm waiting at home for my girlfriend to get back from work. Whats the over/under on the starting time?
Do I need to leave her ticket at home for her, head down on my own and risk the backlash? Or can I feel safe waiting til 7:30ish for her to get home, then walking down to the game with her?

Hey Mr. Schmuck, which of the young hurlers called up is considered the best -Hernandez, Bergesen or Berken?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: That's an interesting question. They're all different style pitchers. If I had to choose, I'd say Bergesen, but each has his attributes.

In reference to "The Scout":
Steve Nebraska freaked out and had to be talked down from the roof of Yankee stadium. I really hope that doesn't happen!
P is for premier prospect's premier.
