The streak ends

The Orioles had a couple of prime scoring opportunities go for naught and they paid the price in tonight's 6-3 loss. Adam Jones will be tossing and turning over his 1-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and no one out in the fifth. And Aubrey Huff fouled out with runners at second and third and one out in the seventh. It's not a perfect science.

The Orioles go into the final game of the series with seven wins in their last nine games, so it's probably silly to be too upset about losing to Justin Verlander.

I am stoked about the O's, Pete.

Even with the loss, they are playing like a team and it's fantastic to watch.

Enjoy the moment, O's fans.

Also, when was the last time the Birds won 5 in a row?

Pete,
I didn't see the game. How many pitches had Guthry thrown?
More importantly, if he is our ace right now, how can you pull him after 6 innings?
I have to agree with others that Trembley just is not that great at hendling the bullpen and taking starters out at the right time. I realize there is always hindsight with these moves, but why in the world is Jamie Walker still pitching for this team....and in tight ballgames....it really makes no sense that I can see.

Pete's reply: 113 pitches.

Hey Schmuck- Sorry if this has been ask before, but do you think Weiters will DH on sunday?
I am pretty sure he wont catch, bc night game after a day game...ect, but is there a chance he DH's, I'm going to the game and want to know

Thanx.

Pete's reply: I really don't know what the lineup will be tomorrow. Sorry.

Weiters appears to be a more than capable receiver, and the man can hit. Look out AL, there's a new kid on the block. Go O's, take the next one off Los Tigres des Ciudad Detroit. It's a long season and plenty of opportunities to start another winning streak. First thing you know the O's will have teams looking back over their shoulders.

Refresh my memory: which batters is Walker supposed to get out? I seem to have forgotten. Why is he still on this team?

Let's see Pete, you say there's no shame in losing to Verlander and I disagre, that's simply a technicality. He was already out of the game, just that the "genius"Dave Trembley brings in Albers who has been pitching okay instead of Bass, who is supposed to be your long man and has been pitching fantastic, and gives up a dinger to the first man he faces, who had one home run coming nto the game. Then he brings in Jamie Walker who gets lucky on a suicide squeeze play and then gets hammered by another lefthander.so afterthe game is 6-3,he brings in Bass and wastes him,to get the next 4 outs, which really don't matter atthat point.Secondly, why is Adam Jones even swinging at 2-0 with the bases loaded and no outs. The pressure is on the pitcher not the batter,He swung at ball 3.We got ourselves out all night and Albers should have feilded that little grounder, which threw Izturis completely off.Another night in which poor situational hitting and poor managing cost us the ball game.I wish I knew why Jamie Walker is still here,he has to have something on somebody. Now you've wasted Bass for tomorrows game because Dave doesn't like his pitchers to pitch back to back nights. And we'll probably need him, because the vauntedSunday lineup will be in,I can see it now,Andino at short ,Zaun at catcher and Pie in left field. This was a winnable game. But thenagain we've been here about 20 times already this year and poor execution and managing do us in every time.I was embarrassed to see another good starting effort wasted.Repeat after me,we will never win with Trembley as manager.

Pete's reply: Burt. If you hate the guy after a 7-2 run, you're going to be down on just about anybody who holds the job.

I'm with Norm. Walker's not going to be part of this team next year. The only reason to keep him is because he is owed $$ and there is an outside chance that he can up his trade value to be valuable by July--and by trade value, I mean someone willing to take his contract as the O's will never even get a bucket of balls for him. But I'd rather see Wilfrido or even Mickilio fail in those opportunities. Heck, let's break Troy Patton in as a bullpen lefty. At least they'd be learning and we can see what they're made of. It's the same reason Freel got dumped. Addition by subtraction as it opened the door for Reimold. Now let's do the same in the pen.

Pete,

I know it's silly to get upset with this loss, but I can't help myself! All we needed was Huff to hit the ball on the ground someplace and we tie the score and wrestle the momentum from the Tigers. Baseball is a team game. Give yourself up in that situation instead of trying to be a hero.

Pete,I don't hate Trembley,I've just noticed that when we get good pitching and great hitting and he doesn't have to make any moves in a close game,he's an amazing manager when all he has to do is sit on his hands. But the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That's Trembley. He comes across as a great guy,but that doesn't make him a good manager.Again,ifI question the moves in advance and have been correct about 80% of the time as a long time baseball fan, what does that say?Too bad I don't have your direct number to call you ahead of time, then when I say I told you so,you'd actually believe me,lol. The last 3 managers had similar streaks, but I'll use one example from last night to point out the difference.Leyland used 3 or 4 pitchers to get out of the seventh inning.Trembley's biggest fault in my opinion is that he never seems to realize when a pitcher doesn't have it or when he should use 2 or 3 pitchers to get out of a critical situation. He wasted Brian Bass when he should have brought him in to start the 7th inning. The seventh inning has been our nemesis all year and last night was no exception. Then to compound it by bringing in Jamie Walker was abysmal.Enough said.

That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
