The mountain was too high

The Orioles just staged a laser show against Rays closer Troy Percival, but the opportunity to win the game got away in the top of the ninth inning when the Rays scored four times off Bob McCrory.

Brian Roberts and Felix Pie hit back-to-back home runs and the Orioles scored four times in the bottom of the ninth, but six runs was a little too much to ask. Just an aside, but maybe Pie needs to get food poisoning more often. He was forced back into the lineup by the injury to Adam Jones and went 2 for 2, including the 400-foot shot in the ninth.

Let the second guessing begin.......Why did Trembley keep McCrory in for so long?

Pete--Yes, just as Palmer used to suffer from the stiff neck, be forced out to the mound by Weaver, get visited by #4 a few times during the game, and end up with another shutout.

Remember back in the carefree days of Spring Training when our bullpen was all set, and we only had to worry about the rotation?
Oh well, beats being a Yankee fan.

Mr Pie is starting to look more comfortable. Keep playing him David! No reason to sit Reimold if Jones is out either.

Pete, do you think there will be any more callups of young pitchers this year? If so, who?

Pete's reply: I'm pretty sure there will be some pitching call ups. I think Chris Tillman will eventually be up. Maybe David Hernandez in a relief role. I believe this team will look quite different in August than it does now.

Trembley's an idiot and he gave up on this game. No reason to leave McCrory in there for the whole 9th. I want a manager thats passionate about winning.

Pete,

This headline was right, just to much to expect in one inning. Interesting though that Jamie Walker fails again to get the lefties out! Our bullpen is really struggling. Dave really hasn't been able to count on anyone lately except Baez! And I'm not a Baez guy, but he's had the warmest hand!

I think Pie would be a nice #2 hitter. Too bad he is left handed. Dave hates having 3 of them in a row.

Jones is so locked in. He could be protecting Markakis not the other way around.

"Let the second guessing begin.......Why did Trembley keep McCrory in for so long? "

Because he has misused his bullpen going back to taking out Koji too early to having Ray pitch 1 and 1/3 inn.to playing match-ups with Walker when he pitched ok but Roberts didn't cover the bag. Trembley left McCory out to dry and the rest of the team had to deal with it also.

Liz, Hoey, McCrory...three prospects I'd be happy to never see pitch in an O's uniform again.

I don't care what they did in the minors, they've all been really unimpressive - and flat out sucked - in ML service time.

Get rid of them and let other guys (like Hill) take their places (in this case, McCrory's)

I still don't know why Trembly kept McCrory in the game. He was awful. I just don't get it. I guess he wanted to save the bullpen, because keeping him in was essentially declaring defeat-giving up.

Kind of far fetched, but if Reimold does well and if Pie keeps improving like he has been all month, there is gonna be a problem with over staffing in left. I personally feel Luke Scott or Montanez is going to be on the trading block and soon. To me we keep Montanez cause he can work from the bench and also DH and is younger than Scott. What are your thoughts on the situation?

Pete's reply: I think you're right about the possibility that this could get very complicated over the next two weeks.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
