Reimold making his case

Nolan Reimold cranked his second major league home run in the second inning. I guess after going 400-plus against Mariano Rivera, Jordan Zimmerman wasn't much of a challenge.

This may sound premature, but Reimold looks like he's going to stick. He has impressed everybody with the way he is carrying himself and he clearly has big-time power. The activation of Luke Scott is looming and I'm pretty sure that Reimold is the only one of the left fielders on the roster who safe.

Lou Montanez may have to go back, but it wouldn't totally surprise me if Scott's return brings an early end to the Felix Pie experiment. The club expected him to struggle at the plate, but his struggles in the outfield are making it more difficult to justify putting him out there ahead of Reimold.

Meanwhile at Norfolk: David Hernandez is making a case, too. He struck out the side in each of the first two innings of tonight's start against Rochester. Unfortunately for him, however, if he throws more than one more inning, it probably means he isn't the guy coming up to fill the No. 5 slot in the major league rotation, since Dave Trembley said that pitcher will definitely pitch on Tuesday and Hernandez would be on short rest.

Pete,

Come on, don't rush him! Had the situation not played itself out the warehouse would still have him in the minors too! It's pathetic, letting guys steal major league ABs and innings from quality guys down on the farm! Wieters should come up and catch today and bring our new starting pitcher with him in the car!

Who do they have that can play CF respectably if Pie isn't on the roster? The O's can not expect Jones to play out the season with the way his hamstring has been.

Is Frank Gifford subbing for Jim Palmer tonight? I've notice some similarities between the two in pitch (not the kind you throw) and cadence before, but tonight, Palmer sounds exactly like Gifford.

Seems like Palmer's either fighting a cold/allergies and he sounds really hopped up like whatever he may be taking for it is kicking in big time.

Jeff V. the backup CF is Louis Montanez. I can't see Felix Pie sticking around much longer. The Orioles are probably thinking of sneaking him thru waivers then assign him to Norfolk. At this point I don't see anyone claiming him. If Pie and Montanez leave, then I assume Nick Markakis would be the backup CF. Reimold did play CF in spring training but only briefly so Trembley can see who can play what.

Peter,
Is there any talk of possibly flipping a OF for some depth at, say, (I don't know)..pitching? I think it's becoming obvious that Reimold may be forcing the decision. If a kid is performing well like Reimold is, we can't really reasonably send him down just to stay on track with an artificial time table, without it being some kind of setback for him. Couldn't such a move possibly hurt his development?

I think we may want to trade Montanez for a useful RP. Sure, the pitcher we get back might not be the greatest arm out there, but it may set us up for a trade later. Trading Baez might be in he cards. He is exactly the kind of arm that garners much in a deadline deal.

Pete's reply: Lou Montanez, at this point, doesn't get you a pitcher that would be worth giving him up. Baez may have some value, but you're only going to get so much for a middle guy no matter how good he's going.

(judge) Reimold sticks. Montanez gets sent back down. Pie stays as LF/CF backup.

Weiters called up June 1st. Be patient for another week or so cause the big W will be with us for years to come.

As a follow-up to my earlier post, Peter,

I might be in the camp that supports trading Baez at some point for a low level prospect or two. Such a move would probably not be the most popular thing to do, I know, but by reducing our asking price, we'd make it up in upside. True we'd not get anything in present day values to write home about. It won't look anything close to the Bedard trade the day after such a trade, but such moves do work out sometimes. I think about the AJ Pierzinski trade that netted the Twins Bonser, Liriano, and Nathan. At the time the Giants were trading for a good glove/ offensive catcher entering his prime. What they got wasn't quite that, esp. considering what they gave up. Liriano's arm blew out and the book isn't closed on him yet, but he had one of the more memorable AAA tears in recent memory in 2005. Baez is in his final year whatever happens this season. His salary is on the high side, but he does throw mid-90s, has closer experience, can pitch multiple innings, and has shown consistency this year. I don't think we'd get a Tillman, but we might get a Single-A Hernandez or Bergesen. Or more to the point, as our recent troubles of filling in shortstop attests to, we need some infield prospects. I don't think it's absurd to think we may be able to snag a future MLB SS or 3B along the lines of Izturis in exchange for Baez.

Am I just waay off or does this kind of sound reasonable?

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: The problem is, Baez has a big salary and a month of track record. No, I don't think you get a future SS or 3B for that. What you get is a few million bucks back to spend later.

Dave,

"... the backup CF is Louis Montanez."

DT wasn't crazy about him playing LF. Can't see them entrusting CF to him even as a fill-in.

I still don't know why everyone feels Pie is an option?!? The guy is lost out there. Jones, Markakis, Scott, Montanez, and Reimold (Ty is even an option) are the outfielders. When Scott comes back, Pie is gone. Please stop your nonsensical ramblings of Pie being an outfielder on this roster. Pete, help me out here.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I wouldn't be surprised if Pie goes when Scott comes back, but it's no lock. Montanez could go back.
