Ray out, Hernandez in
Everybody knew David Hernandez would be added to the 25-man roster this afternoon, but there was some suspense before Chris Ray was sent to Triple-A Norfolk to work on his mechanics. The club had other options, but Ray's demotion makes sense in light of his recent struggles and 9.39 ERA in 17 appearances.
The O's have to make another move tomorrow to make way for Matt Wieters. They'll likely keep Gregg Zaun, but it is also possible they'll be able to keep Chad Moeller in the organization.
Making waves: Ravens safety Dawan Landry joins me tonight on Sportsline on WBAL (1090 AM). We'll also talk baseball, of course, as the countdown continues to Matt Wieters' debut tomorrow night. If you're out of signal range, go to WBAL.com and click on the "Listen Live" icon.

Seems like the right move, sending Ray down. He needs the work but not the pressure. Hopefully he'll get his mechanics straightened out, and start finding the plate again.
Man this season isn't even 1/3 done yet and damn near the entire ptching staff has been reworked already. Will we even recognize this team by September?

Pete's reply: I hope so. It would be pretty confusing if we couldn't.

So the Mets are looking for a first baseman? Are the O's in on this or just the Nationals? Aubrey Huff might bring a prospect or two and Snyder is ready to move up and take a shot. GET INVOLVED!

Pete's reply: Please explain how you know Snyder is ready?

Can you tell me why this game had to start in the rain? Its not the end of the season, no pennant race involved. What's the reason?

Pete's reply: I think they knew from the radar that it would stop within a few minutes.

I had thought that Ray should go back to the minors for a little while now. He needs to get things straight. In spite of the shortage of lefties in the pen I think that Walker should go, to make room on the roster. He would save everybody time if he would just turn around and throw the ball over the fence himself instead of waiting for the batters to do it.
But he would likely miss that too.

Moving Ray is in the best interest of the team right now & in his best interest long term. His mechanics were scary prior to his surgery... & he's been a complete mess since his return. The unnecessary pressure he's been placing on his arm had to be dealt with now or the kid was going to undo not only the surgery but, all his hard work since then. To be perfectly honest...he doesn't need Norfolk right now, he should be down in Florida spending the next two weeks working strictly on mechanics. After that, a few outings in the Instructional league down there, Bowie, Norfolk & back to Baltimore by July 4th. Absolutely no reason to rush this kid back...he has tremendous talent...now he finally needs to learn how to use it.

Pete I don't expect this one to make it to the website, seeing how there's already 5 more blogs after this one and the Wieter's countdown blogs that I'm sure will begin tomorrow, but just between me and you I had a comment about the Brandon Snyder - Aubrey Huff question raised earlier on here.
At the beginnning of the year I was certain Huff would be traded and was fine with it as long as it could bring a good SS prospect in return. I figured that Salazar could fill in capably at first the rest of the year and then hoped Snyder might be ready for 2010. But the past few weeks I've changed my outlook. After the fistpump baserun on the Joba homer and Huff's recent comments expressing how much he wants to be here and be a part of this wave of young players coming up, his performance, passion, and dedication has won me over. I think we should sign Huff and lock him up for 3 more years. Maybe 2.
As I've said before I base a lot of my decisions on gut feeling, but the thing is I'm almost never wrong. I'd say Montanez is the biggest miss I've had in a few years and that's not completely over yet. That being said I have a great feeling about Snyder and his future with the O's. If he's as good as I think he is (the last of O's minor league position players by the way, at least for a few years), they'll find a spot for him.

Whomever in their right mind would send Huff anywhere for anything but a front line pitcher. Give Synder more time in the little show...
