Hernandez hanging tough

New starting pitcher David Hernandez finally hit a speed bump in the fifth inning after giving up just two hits through four. He allowed a run on two hits and a walk, but helped himself with a nice defensive play on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Ramon Santiago. He'll enter the sixth inning with 88 pitches and 52 strikes. He'll have to be a little more efficient if he wants to pitch into the seventh.

The Orioles have not been very resourceful against Tigers starter Armando Gallaraga. They've hit into a pair of double plays and run out of another opportunity.

Reimold goes yard again!!!

Even if Matt Wieters is only moderately successful out of the gate, all of a sudden we've got a lineup that has to be among the best in the big leagues 1-8. (Can't say 1-9 till we get something out of the SS position)
At the beginning of the year everyone talked about how the O's will struggle to win a game if the top of the order doesn't produce......well, Not So Fast My Friends (get well soon Corso)

Hello Pete:

A question...

With Reimold having 5 home runs in about half as many at bats as Pie, who has two, and with Reimold hitting about 80 points higher than Pie, have the Os settled on Reimold as their everyday left fielder yet? And if not, why not?

Similarly, with Luke Scott with 7 homers and hitting almost 100 points higher than Wigginton, despite having spent time on the DL, is Scott the everyday DH?

A comment: Whoever would have guessed that in late May Danys Baez, as a reliever, would be tied for the team lead in victories with 4?

Pete's reply: Reimold already was the regular left fielder.

Hey Sam,
We get defense out of the shortstop position. A major improvement from LY. I am sure that the names O Smith and Belanger may remind you as to what most MLB teams wish for out of the SS. With Reimold, a healthy Luke Scott and Weiters, we have a 1-8 that competes favorably against anyone.

Just a quick comment on Sam's comment vis-a-vis Izturis. Seems to me the O's are getting exactly what they paid for, a defensive SS who hits .250 (lifetime), and someone solidifies the middle defense.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
