Consolation game

The four-game series against the Tigers ended up being a push, but even in defeat the past couple of games, there were reasons for Orioles fans to believe they are moving hard in the right direction.

Matt Wieters' two-hit performance on Saturday night and Jason Berken's second straight strong start today took a lot of the sting out of the Orioles inability to win the four-game series after taking the first two.

Let's see what happens in Seattle.

In the words of the immortal Harry Doyle: "Two hits? Just Two G** d**m hits?"

Where's Jobu? Can we coax him outta retirement?

I think we hammer teams with average pitching from here on out and shouldn't lose many more series with our lineup.

Great pitching effort by Jason Berken. A few years back when the O's couldn't beat Randy Johnson, they tried putting out the "B" team and had some success. Maybe Trembley might want to take that approach since the "A" team isn't having much Sunday success.

Jackson really looks to have 'found it'. The Tigers stole him from Tampa. I can remember Jackson came up around the same time as DanCab and was about as wild, with a huge ERA etc. I guess some pitchers eventually come around and some like Cabrera never do. I read somewhere that the Marlins are considering giving DanCab another shot-any truth to that?

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I have heard that, too. Apparently, Mark Wiley wants another crack at him.

Pete,

I agree whole heartedly! The O's seem to be playing with self-confidence and they should, they have one of the best outfields in baseball, they have a spectacular offense on the right side of the infield, their DH is tops in MLB and the prospect behind the plate is very high! These young pitchers are truly providing quality starts and Guthrie seems to coming together! So the presumed strength we opened the season with, our bullpen is actually lagging behind with only Johnson and Sherrill showing any consistancy! Yes it is time for the O's nation to rise.

The time is here!
Time to Walker and Hendrickson to take the same train Eaton did!

Why is no one see it. Even if we had to do without that is a plus over these two

opposing teams are really gonna have to work hard to beat these O's. the team is playing great baseball!

Today's game played in 2:20. Hardly got settled in my seat before it was time to try to get a last ditch rally going !
You could see that the Camden Yards fans were unaccustomed watching a well pitched game. I was plenty entertained. Berken and Jackson were both great.
BTW: I noticed Ernie Tyler was not working the game. What's up ?

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Ernie is working the umpires room. He is not taking the balls out to home plate very much right now, but he's fine.

Pete,we don't always agree, and that is partof the fun and sometimes agony of being an Orioles fan in my opinion, but with the numbers that Salazar is putting up at Norfolk this year, and last year for that matter, and the fact that he hit major league pitching last year and in spring training, has any thought been given to bringing him up to play first and resigning Huff and moving him to 3rd.I thought he played a very good 3rd base last year filling in for Mora, and think Melvin will have at least one more DL stint in him before the year is out.His power numbers are way off and he looks like warning track power at the most right now.Any thoughts?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Anything like that would have to be sparked by a Melvin injury or a statistical collapse. I really think they are looking past Salazar to Brandon Snyder.

Well what happened tonight is we just got our *ss kicked. Hugh?.. what was that...PLAYOFFS!...your talking PLAYOFFS!

Berkin pitched better in his second start which is encouraging. David, Jason and Brad all pitch like they are vets. I am not saying they wont struggle because they will, but they seem very mature and they all seem to have good relationship with each other which can only help them develop.

The game that upsets me since you can't win many games with only two hits, was Saturday's game. The O's left so many men on base yet were still in it. I hope they go a little slower with Albers because his situation is more complicated than Baez because he didn't have surgery so the fact he has been so good and pitched a lot this week, he shouldn't have been out there.

Pete, do you think the O's should try to get Pie through waivers? I ask that because clearly LF belongs to Nolan so his riding the bench can't give the O's any sense of what he can or can't do. I think the move would benefit Wiggy the most because he looks lost (more AB's can only help) and the fact that he isn't going to be getting much bats at DH with Luke on fire, would benefit him since he can play the OF. I think a guy that you can pinch run with like Joey Gaithright would make more sense right now. Looking at the last few games, Joey could of had quite a few opportunities to be called upon for pinch running duty.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think they should only waive Pie of they want to wave him bye-bye. Believe it or not, he'll get scooped up in a minute.

Several contending teams are looking for starting pitching. Do you think there's chance that the O's would trade Jeremy Guthrie for a couple of prospects? Almost every time I hear MacPhail speak for public consumption I hear him lament the lack of a SS prospect in the O's system. It's almost like he's setting up the fans for a future transaction.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I doubt it. It's a little early to feel comfortable with the young guys behind him in the rotation.

17-11 in May, a 5-2 homestand against Toronto and Detroit (the best pitching staff in baseball), 40K+ on Friday night at the Yard, Wieters debuts, young pitchers' quality starts. I'd say we're moving in the right direction.

Chuck,
That WAS the B-team, with Mora, Izzy and Reimold sitting, Luke in left and Zaun behind the plate. The only way to get any more "B" would be to sit Luke and start Pie in left--or start Hendo again. No matter--Jackson was just plain filthy, and the offensive standbys AJ, Nicky & Huff are all kind of off their game at the moment anyway. Time to lick our wounds and move one, and maybe give AJ a day off to regroup.

BTW, was it just me, or did the New Saviour look a bit like a deer in the headlights yesterday? Hey, I'm as excited as the next guy about bringing this kind of talent up, but he still has some ways to go before he he can take on big league pitching on equal terms. Just like for Nicky and AJ, it will take some time.

Oh, yes: time to DFA Walker.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Wieters always looks a little like that. Let's be realistic. He's not going to hit .400 this year. The fans wanted him up, but he's still got some developing to do at this level.

Pete-

Could it be possible for Luke Scott to be our 1st baseman when Huff is gone? Has he ever played first? If he can't, are there other of our young outfielders that can play there as we seem to have derth of young players there (Markakis, Jones, Rienhold, Scott, ect).

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: That's a question for the first week of spring training next year. I really don't know the answer. Maybe Brandon Snyder will be ready then. It'll be more relevant if Luke goes on to hit 30 homers. We don't know that's going to happen.

Another great start for a rookie pitcher-kudos too Jackson he made the hottest hitter in baseball (Scott) look a little foolish- The O's had nothing for Jackson-Berken was great!!! I think I actually saw Wigginton take a first pitch without swinging wildly at it-amazing! I see the light -maybe we can trade Wiggington for a case of balls or big league chew!-Let's go O's

I've got to question the logic of sitting Reimold in favor of getting Zaun into the lineup. Weiters didn't need a "break" from catching yet. I was also disappointed to see Wigginton in the lineup instead of Mora. When there are players in the lineup that are basically giving up outs every time they bat, that has a huge impact over the course of the game and I think that was evident in yesterday's game.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Yeah, but Reimold may have needed a break. And Zaun has to play once in awhile or he's going to go nuts.

I'm so excited the way the Orioles are playing right now, but I think Trembley is still making some terrible calls. Stop putting the "B" team out there on Sundays. You have a rookie pitcher out there, give him all the weapons the Orioles have. We should have had Mora, Reimhold, and Izturis (who is hitting 451 at home) all in there. How do we not even pinch hit for Zaun in the 8th??

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: You can't pinch hit for Zaun there because there aren't any more catchers.

Pete-

Could it be possible for Luke Scott to be our 1st baseman when Huff is gone? Has he ever played first? If he can't, are there other of our young outfielders that can play there as we seem to have dearth of young players there (Markakis, Jones, Reinhold, Scott, ect).

Mr. Shmuck--

Playoffs in 2011?

Thanks,

Tim McK

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Possible. I'm not ruling out 2010, though it would take some serious dominos falling in place.

why in craps sake doe wiggy swing at the first pitch EVERY at bat, angers me greatly!

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: You are not alone.

I think any fan that goes to any Sunday game should rethink their choice. Every Sunday we play the scrubs.
And then the announcers wonder why we have such a poor daytime record.
Not a rocket scientist in the bunch.

Walker and Henne need to go....

I have seen Weiters not do to well so far, except for Saturday when he had two big hits. I also remember a guy named Ripken coming up in the early eighties and couldn't hit anybody when he was called up in September. Give Weiters a break. He will come around now that he is out of town for a number of days. The change of scenary will probably be what the doctor ordered.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think he did just fine over the weekend. I'm not worried about him a bit.
