Reimold reignites an argument
Norfolk outfielder Nolan Reimold was named International League Player of the Week this morning, after hitting .464 (13 for 28) last week and improving his position among the league leaders in several departments.
Reimold (shown at right after hitting a home run this spring) his batting .415 overall with three homers, 14 RBI, 17 hits and a .457 on-base percentage, to rank in the top five in the league in each of those departments. He also had a great spring in major league camp, but was sent out early because the Orioles already had decided to give Felix Pie the first opportunity to win the full-time job in left field.
Meanwhile, Pie is batting .161 with a home run and two RBI and has been an adventure in the outfield. The club seems committed to giving him several months to establish himself as the multi-tool player he was projected to be as a top prospect in the Chicago Cubs organization, but Reimold and Tides teammate Lou Montanez are not making that decision look very good at the moment.
The International League Pitcher of the Week was Lehigh Valley's Justin Lehr, a 31-year-old journeyman who starred in college at USC. He was 2-0 last week and gave up just two runs in 11 1/3 innings (1.62 ERA).

So bring the young guy up for crying out loud. Lord knows we have a ton of guys to send down. Bring up all the young pitchers too. What's here stinks. Getting set to lose 4 straight to the Red Sox. It's ridiculous.

" Reimold and Tides teammate Lou Montanez are not making that decision look very good at the moment."
Very well put Pete! I understand not rushing a prospect but Lou and Nolan are both in their mid to late 20's past the prospect age and Palmer and several others were pitching in the majors at 20 which didn't seem to stunt their development. So don't you have to take it by individual instead of a blanket rule? DCab may have never amounted to any more than what he has done and some players mature later than others.

Pie looks just like he did with the Cubs. He can't hit, he can't field, and his quirky mannerisms make him look like a hyperactive Mime who is ready to put a spell on someone.
Reimold belongs in left field, he has earned it. Pie belongs in Norfolk where he can attempt to prove himself worthy of a starting outfield job in the Majors.

Look, I'll be the first one to admit Pie hasn't looked good, but it's 30 at bats. I think Gil has it exactly backwards. Pie has proven he can hit at AAA; Reimold hasn't. Reimold had a great year in the minors last year, but it was AA. Many scouts project him as no more than a fourth outfielder. Letting him prove he can hit at AAA first while letting Pie prove he can hit in the big leagues was a logical move, and the only sensible one given the option situation. To me, there was no legitimate debate. Anything that "reignites" it now is purely hindsight--and it's much too early for that even. As for Montanez, I hope he's the next Melvin Mora (late bloomer) but he hasn't hit above AA either. He had an option so he goes to Norfolk and proves himself further. I hope all these guys turn out to be great. It would be a nice problem to have.

Pie is out of options, doesn't that mean he can't go to Norfolk?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Not necessarily. It means he has to pass through waivers. Starting to think he might clear.
Posted by: js | April 20, 2009 12:34 PM
Pete, do you think Pie's slow start makes him any more likely to pass through waivers if the O's try to demote him? Or do you think another team may think he can play in the majors right now?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think the Orioles would have to look at the other 29 teams and gauge the likelihood. He might clear.
Posted by: mikepcfl | April 20, 2009 12:41 PM
Yes they will lose four straight to Boston you can bank on it.Yes the O's need to make some move and not just bring up Brad Bergesen.Cut Brian Bass, Adam Eaton , Ryan Freel , Felix Pie and send Radhamez Liz back to Norfolk.Bring up (Chris Waters till Rich Hill ready ) , Lou Montanez ,Nolan Reimold .O's aren't putting a winning team on the field everyday so you can't win and its has shown in Boston.I heard from ESPN that Matt Wieters is closer than you think.

Reimold- 25 years old
Montanez- 27 years old
Pie- 24 years old
So calling up those guys would be rushing a prospect through the system before he's ready? What sense does that make. Pie has shown he can't hack it at the MLB level. Send him down to AAA, DL-Freel, promote Reimold and Montanez to platoon them at LF. This clinging to Pie is ridiculous. See if he ever develops at AAA.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Don't think it's an issue of rushing when it comes to Montanez or Reimold.

Seems arm chair GM's are on the rise after this weekend. These O's fans think they know more about how to turn this ship around. The Red Sox staff is very impressive, even without Josh Beckett and Dice K on the bender.
The team needs pitching, but no prospects are truly ready. The front office knew arms were needed. They tried to find a few, but stuggled. This town thinks Bergensen is the answer until he un-corks a 6 run inning and they will be screaming for the next re-placement. I have seen to many rushed pitchers over the years, but what other choice do the Orioles have at the moment. The bullpen is in rags and not many can be trusted.
Hitting is second nature to this bunch unless it faces lights out pitching, which Boston has at the moment. The Orioles are going to put up runs and can live with Pie in left.
This is suppose to be a building year, why rush after 12 games of baseball. It is still April and this town needs to relax and allow things to play out....

The experiment did'nt work. Pie, Freel, Itzuris, and Zaun can't hit at all and Eaton, Hendrickson, Simon, & Bass are just not good enough. They have to bring up Reimold, Montanez, Weiters and Jason Turner to get hitting from 1 thru 9 because of the obvious lack of pitching. What can it hurt? They can't win anyway because the young pitchers aren't ready, so give these guys a shot. As for who of has no options left----Are you kidding me? Who cares!
Posted by: NORM | April 20, 2009 1:26 PM
I'm getting tired of the Orioles being the last chance garage for Cubs schlubs. And has anyone ever seen Ryan Freel and Toby from The Office in the same place?

"As for Montanez, I hope he's the next Melvin Mora (late bloomer) but he hasn't hit above AA either. "
He hit in the .290's in the major leagues last season! That's not AA.

Can we all just calm down? It is April for crying out loud. We have bigger problems than Pie - much bigger problems. This season is a wash anyway, so lets just keep him in the lineup to at least the all star break. If Reimold or Montanez are still tearing it up than we can talk. Kid is only 24 years old, we just need to relax.

What argument? Pie is not ready and Freel is taking up a roster spot better used on in house players. Reimold, Montanez and Moore earned spots in the spring. Let's see what we have. Are they legit or are they 4A players? Only one way to find out.
I could never figure out the Pie deal when Montanez came up last year and played well. I understand the need for depth but why trade for a guy out of options? I don't like being handcuffed to a player. We should wait anothr week, when Pie's average drops below .100 then make the move.

Terpfan, it hasn't been 30 AB's for Pie, it's been parts of 2 years, plus Spring Training & Pie has yet to prove he's an even good enough to be a 4th outfielder. Meanwhile Reimold has hit at every level & has 30 HR/yr. potential. Plus the O's need some right handed power, especially w/Jones struggling w/a bad hammy. Pie's simply not a major league player & Reimold deserves the chance to make it at the big league level.
Posted by: Steve | April 20, 2009 5:46 PM
I think Pie is hitting .141 now.
This stuff about 30 AB's is simply not true. He had about 250 at bats with the Cubs last year, and his performance in Spring Training ws poor as well. He loks to be a AAAA player that will never hit MLB pitching as he hasn't yet, and I can't ever imagine Pie being able to hit a lefty.
At least Montanez showed some ability to hit major league pitching last fall and in the Spring.
Does anyone really think someone would Pie on thier roster for the reaminder of the year if he was waived. I seriously don't...well, maybe the Nationals. They sent Milledge down and he was a better ballplayer than Pie.

Dave Trembley is starting to remind me of Brian Billick. Billick stuck with Boller til the bitter end when even the casual Raven's fan knew he just doesn't have it. Trembley is doing the same thing with Pie. Just watch him at the bat and in the field. What do you see? What do Trembly and McPhail see? Someone has to admit that they made a mistake with Pie, and sooner would be much better than later. ( just ask Billick ).
Montanez should have been here on day one and starting in left field every day. Not only did he win the triple crown in Double A ( who else has done that), but unlike Reimold and Pie, he showed in September that he could hit major league pitching.

Pie has done nothing but cause desention with the fans and clubhouse, not to mention not contributing to the team.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I hope you're not saying that fan disagreement about a player should have any bearing on a front office decision. We're 13 games into the season. This team got into this 11-year because of knee-jerk decisions.
Posted by: John | April 21, 2009 7:17 AM
How close did we come to trading Roberts for Pie? If anyone is going to learn at the MLB level, it should be one of our guys ! Pie is no field no hit. Please don't make us wait til the All Star break. Who evaluated this guy? Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder?
Posted by: Norm | April 21, 2009 8:46 AM
Pete:
What I wrote you in March has come true. Now remember that Pie is hitting .141 or something without being asked to hit lefties Oh Pie oh my! The bottom of the order is painful with Pie and Zahn and Izturis playing three outs in a row in a division with some fairly formidible opposition pitching. The O's can carry Izturis because they enough hitting elsewhere but Pie and Zahn must go ASAP. I wish Bergesen good luck tonight. It would be nice if he looks half as good as the Nat's 20 year old Zimmerman did last night (Detroit also seems to have a pretty good 20 year old pitcher]. McPhail needs to forget Chicago and the prospects he hung his hat on back then. He has to look at what he has in the minors and get them up here soon, and before they can get injured in meaningless games and less than optimum medical support.

Yeah, this season is getting stupid for us fans. No one is really making any sense, and we have alot of bad baseball players in the way of the guys they want us to get excited about, but never showcase.
I will not spend money on tickets until something they do makes sense to me...and I'm still waiting!
............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Did it make sense when they were 6-2? That was only a week ago.
Posted by: DirkWiggler | April 21, 2009 11:15 AM
We were told the O's had a great offseason. So what happened? Nearly everyone they acquired this offseason is performing horribly.
Wigginton - .244 avg
Izturis - .171 avg
Pie - .147 avg
Freel - .133 avg
Zaun .118 avg
Uehara - 5.29 ERA
Simon - 9.95 ERA
Eaton 11.25 ERA
Great offseason. Yeah right.

Pete's reply: And just think, if this was the NFL season, there would be only three more games until the playoffs.

If this was the NFL, those bums would have been benched by now.
