Orioles: Uehara cruising

Koji Uehara has given up two runs on five hits over six innings, for all the good it has done him. If you had asked manager Dave Trembley to sign a contract for six innings and two runs today, he would have ripped the pen out of your hand, but the Orioles trail by two and have fallen victim to some bad injury luck.

The loss of Adam Jones -- however brief -- already has cost them. His spot in the order came up with two runners on and nobody out in the top of th sixth inning, but Felix Pie made a passing attempt at a sacrifice bunt and eventually struck out. Pie hasn't looked too sharp in the outfield either, but don't start. He's going to get more than two weeks to get comfortable in the field and at the plate.

Matusz update: Pitching prospect Brian Matusz got off to a rocky start today in Frederick, but settled down after giving up a three-spot in the first inning. He has held the Salem Red Sox scoreless since then and has seven strikeouts through five innings.

We can't get paranoid about injuries. Good teams deal with them. Even the Rays last year had to deal with injuries to Kazmir, Crawford and Upton.

Pie looks terrible. I miss Luke in the outfield.

Pete,

Some friends I were talking, that while our Starting pitching is really bad, our bench may be even worse. I know Wigginton is now starting because of the injury to Melvin, but when Dave has to reach to the bench for a reliable pinch hitter as old Mother Hubbard the cubboard is BARE. We have several folks occupying roster spots and/or stealing ABs from some folks that could really help the club!

Sad to see such a great effort today wasted, Uehara really impressed me today. I kind of had a feeling Lester would look like his usual self since the guy just owns us.

Pate, here is what we know about Freel: (1) he is a malcontent; (2) we got him in trade that is best characterized as addition by subtraction; (3) he is so inadequate as a back-up SS we had to trade-away Penn and reduce the number of pitchers we could carry; and (4) our manager decided Greg Zaun, a journeyman back-up catcher who is holding a seat warm, would be a better option in the top of the ninth with a runner on second. Meanwhile, we have last year's AAA ball triple crown winner continuing where he left off last season. Can you give me a single reason (other than Freel's salary) for why this guy is still in a Baltimore uniform?

Pete's reply: Because you don't judge a veteran player on 12 games, especially when he hasn't played in more than half of them.

felix pie will win the jay gibbons outfield award.at this rate. Get rid of the bum and bring up lou or nolan.

Don't start? He's looked horible in the majors for the Cubs, horrible in spring training and horrible to start the year. What a waste.Meanwhile,Nolan and Lou and Oscar are tearing it up in Triple A,the man can't even get a sacrifice bunt down, misplayed another grounder, almost misplayed a fly ball, and you say don't start.Pete,I like you but this guy shows me less than Corey Patterson ever did.And our bench? Please.

Ben-in case you haven't noticed we're not a good team, and our bench sucks.Tampa had and still has more depth then we do.Our depth is in Triple AAA.Not here.Andfor thos e of you who watch Eaton trot out there and think somehow McPhail is not responsible for this, you're totally wrong.Ifyou bring in 37 bad pitchers, when it's all said and done, the last three standing are still bad.Hat's off to Koji, but our Sunday lineup sucked as usual.

How long do we have to watch Pie struggle. He looks completely overmatched at the plate and looks lost in the outfield.

The Orioles should pull up another outfielder and call the Pie experiment over, finished. They want to keep him on the bench that is a team decision but right now the Orioles have 6 better outfielders between the big club and the minors. I hear you Pete, but really would I have watched him all spring training and two weeks into the regular season and he is not MLB material. I say you give him the time in Center now while Jones is out, when Jones is ready and if Pie is not producing, see if he will clear waivers. I would much rather see Montanez up here to be a role player. Also really expected to see Izturis be like a seven inning player every game. I expected the Orioles would treat him like a pitcher and pinch hit for him in late innings. When they get Mora back, I would hope that there would be a few guys like Wigginton, Freel or Scott that would be on the bench that could assume that pinch hitting role Pete: Your thoughts on that?

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: This is the 13th game and fans are reacting to a four-game losing streak. I don't think the IO's will react that quickly, though Pie certainly hasn't impressed anyone.
