Orioles: Ouch!
Radhames Liz didn't have to wait long to get some feedback on his breaking stuff. Nelson Cruz just launched his first pitch over the fence in right center field for a grand slam that has broken the game wide open.
Welcome back.
Liz walked the second batter he faced, gave up a triple to Elvis Andrus and just allowed Ian Kinsler's fourth hit of the game. This is tough to watch.
Strange trend: For the third straight time, the Orioles have won the first two games of a series and looked like a giant orange-and-black pinata in the series finale -- the pitching staff giving up at least 11 runs in each.

I was thinking this morning when i heard the score that I like this trend of Win 2, Lose 1, though I wouldn't mind the occasional sweep. But if they didn't manage a sweep once this season, but won every series, I could live with that.

Think maybe they need to go with the all star style pitching rotation, everyone pitches one inning and then the next guy.

Pete,
Don't know about you, but it is embarrassing this FO did not work harder to solidify our starting staff. I mean, the freakin pen has pitched more innings than our starters. Un-freakin-believable. Hendrickson and Eaton and Simon are not major league ready. We all praise MacPhail but he has been a Macfailure when it comes to solidifying what will be known as the worst starting 5 in the history of baseball by season's end (unless someone in the FO blinks!)

Pete's reply: You're probably overstating that. If they had signed Tim Redding, they'd still be in the same situation. Derek Lowe and CC weren't coming here. I'll second-guess them on AJ Burnett when he's pitched a half-season for that $80 million. Everybody here was hammering them for not signing Sheets, but they knew what they were doing with that. The one guy I think you can point to is Pedro, who is still out there. Worst rotation in history? Not quite.

Dave T needs to change the get-away-day routine. Sundays were an issue last year too, remember?

Pete's reply: I agree. I think the Orioles should just fly out before the game.

Now that is funny! But true!
Really we all knew there would be days like this. News Flash: The first place Orioles drop a pitchers dual 19-5 against the last place Rangers. The Rangers love to hit off the Orioles for some reason.

WITH MEN ON BASE HENDRICKSON THROWS ONE PITCH EVERY MINUTE. IF HE WORKED ANY SLOWER HE'D BE GOING BACKWARDS.

Liz is, to me, part of that ensemble of pitchers that we felt were the future (Penn, Ryan, etc) that clearly have proven NOT to be such. Why we continue to even have him in the organization is a mystery to me. He has no real future here. He's basically here to eat innings, and in 2009, being an 'innings eater' is being a BP thrower.

Can you tell me why everyon eis so surprised when the O's get blasted in the third game of each series? The #1 & the #2 pitchers on this staff are at best #5's on the majority of the teams in the major leagues. Tha fans better get used to blowouts like this, and what do they think is going to happen when the bats come down to eaqrth and cool off to normal? Best scenario the Os will win no more games than they did last year with such a minor league ptiching staff.

It's never too early to burst the optimists bubble. Anytime a team gives up 40 runs in 3 losses, don't get excited about their wins. The pitching staff will be worn out again by mid-June. July, August and September will be the best part of the season for those of us who dream of 2011 Oriole baseball!

It's the curse of Moeller! Seriously though, he obviously dosen't now how to call a game behind the plate. When he's catching the pitching staff has given up 11, 11 and 19 runs. Also Trembley made some comments after the game to the effect of the lack of communication with pitches. The Orioles are O for Moeller!

Pete's reply: Let's see. He's caught Alfredo Simon, Adam Eaton and Mark Hendrickson...and you think he's the problem?

It could be worse O's fans -- I mean the final could have been 30-3 or something ...

Hi Peter.. Big Fan...
My buddy and I talk O's seemingly everyday; and we always end up dissecting the same subject everyday...the pitching. I truely believe our lineup 1-9 is a playoff caliber lineup, and that is subject to discussion another time. But this rotation and some of the bullpen as you well know is no where near said level, let alone a collegiate level it seems.
I believe when Hill finally gets healthy that will provide some relief, but I can honestly not see Hendrickson and Eaton pitching the whole year. Their pitches are up, their breaking stuff hangs, and they cannot find the corners. I am not saying bring up the whole farm, but it seems Bergeson is ready and when he is called up I believe he will take either Hendrickson's or Eaton's spot once Hill returns. Who is another candidate to come up and for that last rotation spot in maybe late May/early June?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: The other candidates are Chris Waters and David Hernandez in the first half, maybe Chris Tillman late in the season.

I think MacPhail and Trembley were HOPING that guys like Eaton and Hendrickson could POSSIBLY be respectable for a while, but the worst possible scenario is taking shape. Putting their hopes in 2 proven losers like those guys was a bad idea, but I understand what they were thinking. And I agree with Schmuck's evaluation of the starters who were available --- the good ones weren't gonna come here anyway!! It's time to bring up Bergesen and maybe Waters or Hernandez or even Tillman and give 'em a shot. Seriously, what's the alternative?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think things are moving in that direction, though it will happen piecemeal, not all at once.
Posted by: SevernDave | April 16, 2009 10:41 AM
Pete,
Please ask MacPhail why he does not sign Pedro to a one year deal! I think most Oriole fans would like to know why.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I have asked him that several times. His answer, generally is, "That's not the direction we're going."

Since pitching is 50-75% of the game, and the O's have none, shouldn't the poor jerks that bought tickets get 50-75% of their money back? They keep wheelin' Liz out there like they've got a death wish. Too many minor league pitchers on the team. By Memorial Day the bullpen will be exhausted. Kinsler wants to take the entire "pitching" staff home to meet his family then out to dinner
