Orioles: Freel still restless
Utilityman Ryan Freel (left) will start an injury rehabilitation assignment on Friday, but he obviously would rather be on his way out of town for good. He repeated yesterday that he doesn't feel like there is a real place for him in Baltimore.
Though he stopped short of demanding a trade, it was pretty apparent what he was saying as he talked to reporters today.
"There's nothing wrong with change,'' Freel said. "I believe in change and I don't think I fit here. I don't think I fit anywhere they want me to fit in this organization."
Freel said he was ecstatic when he was acquired by the Orioles in the deal that sent catcher Ramon Hernandez to the Cincinnati Reds, but he isn't ecstatic now.
"I'm not happy about the situation, but there's nothing I can do about it,'' he said. "It's not the same. I was thrilled to death coming here. I'm definitely not as happy as when I first came here, but we'll see what happens."

I feel bad for him, but he should look at the depth chart. Should he be playing left field over Scott or SS over Andino? It's a shame because he is plays hard. Sad thing is I don't even think he'd get decent playing time in Washington.

I never saw a reason to acquire Freel in the first place. If the O's can get a even a decent piece in return, I'd trade him. He isn't a bad player, but he just never seemed to fit on this roster. I feel for him, because I think in a different situation he could be valuable.

Don't let the door knob hit you on the way out, RYAN. Certainly your batting average will fit into your shaving kit.

Tell Freel to shut his hole and toughen up. He couldn't keep a starting job in Cincy and when I watched the Reds earlier this year, they had Jerry Hairston in left and Darnell McDonald in center. If you can't keep your job over those guys then you need to realize you are what you are - 5th outfielder/pinch runner/pinch hitter/get coffee for Trembley/cry baby...
Tell him July 31 is only 95 days away!!! Keep those bags, Ryan!

what the hell is this guy's problem? with all the good stuff i read in the off season about people liking Freel's hustle and whatnot, i was hoping he would be a fine addition to this team. that being said..... and i am sure others will agree with me when i say "if you don't want to be here, don't let the door hit you on the a$$ on your way out...."
is there someone on the coaching staff that he dosen't get aong with? Did (Capt. Kirk) Trembley say something to him that rubbed him the wrong way? I wonder if he did something to offend the rest of his teammates.... So lets get rid of this joker and get someone who WANTS to be on a major league team...... Bring up Nolan Riemold I say!!!!!!!

Good for him. good luck with another team. Oscar will be called up. Nolan next. Lots of pop when Freel leaves. Miller will be here when there is room. Pie and Lou I like. Left field is set. Reimold should be playing 1st. base in Va. Huff, Reimold would work. Hope you tried "Seaside" near Hospital Drive. Best in the state. Thats easy.

Well he's really hurting his trade value being a vocal malcontent.King of one of the unwritten rules of baseball not to do this.He is right he doesn't fit on this team because of all the redundant players. I'm sure when he got traded he wasn't expectiing them to go get Wiggy and Pie.I mean who would?
Posted by: John | April 28, 2009 5:31 PM
yeah, this situation could get cancerous if they start loosing, Pie or someone is still hitting in the low 100's, and he's not getting at bats.
but really, trade bait?
Posted by: Kory | April 28, 2009 5:34 PM
Stop whining and play, how much is he getting paid to play? Sounds like a middle schooler
Posted by: Eric | April 28, 2009 5:41 PM
Freel is lucky he is in baseball. He is a role player, not playing his role.
Posted by: Canice Murphy | April 28, 2009 5:49 PM
Well then good riddance!
We can trade him for pitching. You know, pitchers that can get opposing hitters out.
Posted by: Scot from Gettysburg | April 28, 2009 5:50 PM
I'd be thrilled to death if the Orioles just released him. He looked like he didn't care during any of his at bats, and he hasn't played well at all. That should be good enough for a ticket out of town.
I'd much rather have Montanez on the roster for good than listen to Freel's crying.

Find the door that says EXIT and walk through.

Yeah just what the O's need, a whiny utility player.

Who cares? Goodbye Freel.

Unfortunately, I think the upshot is that they need to cut him loose (assuming they can't trade him). Having a disgruntled veteran around is not going to help the kids grow; it's only going to distract them and teach bad habits. Pete, any chance someone might take him in a trade? Maybe for a player to be named? A couple of bags of balls? Joe Orsulak's old hairstylist?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Somebody will take him if the Orioles eat part of his contract.

Good Day Mr. Schmuck,
I can see why Freel is upset. But I think that Montanez and Reimold have better reasons to be here playing. I noted back when every one was wanting Wieters to be called up, AA versus AAA is a big step. I have notices that Wieters isn't hitting as great as has at other levels. It takes time.Every body needs to feel very comfortable at the level they are playing.
Freel hasn't really tore up when he did play. Lot to be said about proving yourself. Still can't understand Pie being so great. AAA is what he needs.

Baseball players are amazing. He is hitting about .100 and he is miffed about not fitting in. I hope that he is gone before he finishes rehab. What a joke?
Posted by: John S | April 28, 2009 6:39 PM
Then he really doesn't belong here - like he said. He's a cancer to the clubhouse if he's spouting off like this. After all this I don't like him - ahem - particularly. I'm not sure if I liked the trade in the first place. I guess we'll see how this pans out. Haha.

Maybe Ryan Freel should look closer at the word before his name: utilityman. That means any job you have in the majors makes you an extremly fortunate person. It means you are barely good enough to be on any roster.
Posted by: Jon | April 28, 2009 7:48 PM
Pete,
Freel is obviously disapointed with the way he was being used, but instead of doing something about that with his bat, he wants to engage in this verbal assault like he is owed something, He;s an aging lifetime utility guy that didn't produce when given the opportunity. How does he think Montanez, Reimhold, Bergersen and Wieters feel? Personally I would dump him as soon as possible, it's going to be a long season, Dave doesn't need a vocal mediocre malcontent stirring the pot from the bench!

time to send freel on his way. he's not a difference maker. i'm sure the o's can find a good utility player who'd be thrilled to be paid $400,000 to play baseball part time.
Posted by: FKTERP | April 28, 2009 8:03 PM
Note to Mr. Freel: Somewhere out there is another utility guy who can hit the ball one time out of six. At my job, I've had periods equivalent to hitting .133 for my boss. That's when I try to show up on time, smile at everyone, and keep a low profile until I feel like I'm pulling my weight again. It hadn't occurred to me to start getting all hissy about 'not fitting in the organization.' I just hurry to the bank with my paycheck, feeling a little guilty for taking it.

if freel could pitch he might have a job..this team has nothing but outfielders. He doesn't make a bit of difference in the fortunes of this team, now or ever. Time for him to take a long walk.
And speaking of pitching, is there one starter who can hold a lead? Can't they keep the ball in the ballpark at least. The absolute worst pitching staff in the majors. The worst. No doubt.
If Eaton cost more than the ML minimum he's be on the street tomorrow.
At some point this year, and I think the GM's hand will be forced, most of these starters will be looking for work as relievers. At some point, 5 or 6 runs has to win you a game...
20 games in, although none of these guys is going to get any better, did you think they could pitch any worse???
Posted by: jim66 | April 28, 2009 8:29 PM
Chalk up the Freel deal as another bad one-time to cut our losses. I'm sure the other MLB teams are lining up to hand this joker a starting job. He sounds like another Steve Kline-all mouth and no results.
If we were smart we'd also send Eaton on the next bus out. It doesn't seem like he's complaining but his teammates probably are. He's like a batting practice pitcher out there-they are likely worried about being hurt, not to mention ticker off about having to score 8 runs a game to have any chance of winning when he starts. Yes, he threw a good game last time out but tonight's 'effort' is more of what to expect.
We are only 20 games into the season and there are too many negative issue cropping up. Griping about playing time, consistently bad starting pitching and a lack of leadership from our field boss...

I don't blame Freel for looking out for his career, because it is on a thin precipice right now, and his situation with the Orioles will only harm it. I would do the same thing he's doing, although initially behind closed doors rather than to the press. How would you guys feel if you were in his position?
The problem is his contract is too big. I mean, the O's acquired him in a contract dump of Ramon's but he's still paid too much ($5.5 million), and so trading him will be hard. He's just not that valuable. But I don't blame him for fighting for his career.
Posted by: Orsulakfan | April 28, 2009 8:52 PM
i don't blame him for fighting for his career. i just don't know what kind of careers are out there for utility men that can't hit and can't even play shortstop. at least andino can do that.

Freel did nothing during all of spring training and in the limited time he has played in Baltimore, he hasn't been that great. I know it was a trade with the Reds, but we would have taken their mascot to rid ourselves of Ramon, so I am not sure if Ryan had any delusions that he was going to be the centerpiece of the O's along with Brian and Nick?
Posted by: Birdland Todd | April 29, 2009 1:22 AM
my answer to him to quit.
Posted by: Kevin from Baltimore | April 29, 2009 8:04 AM
Why do you think he was part of the Hernandez trade? So we'd eat his $4 million contract. Remember, we got rid of Hernandez in this deal. Would you people rather have Hernandez back and another $4 million tacked on to Freel's $4 mil?

BYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Freel was the MAN in Cincy, loved by all for his intense, and reckless play. Anywhere else he is just another mediocre ballplayer right now. Just let him play, and enjoy watching a player with REAL passion to excel(even if he's a journeyman at best). I for one miss watching him play for my Reds!
