Orioles: Don't try this at home
Guess I picked the right day to duck out of spring training camp, since I wouldn't have wanted to be interviewing Dave Trembley after today's game. The Orioles took an 8-0 lead on the New York Mets at Port St. Lucie in the fourth inning and ended up suffering their most ignominious come-from-ahead defeat of the spring.
Adam Eaton started out okay, but gave up four runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth before concluding his final spring appearance with a 7.29 ERA. This is another reason why the turtle incident remains my fondest memory of spring training.
Today's plug: We'll be talking Orioles baseball and a whole lot more on Sportsline tonight at six on WBAL (1090 AM). If you aren't in listening range, go to WBAL.com and click on the "Listen Live" icon.

Pete,
""We were told to not say anything about the field, but if nobody says anything, it's never going to get fixed," said third base prospect Mike Costanzo."
I think that sums of the state of the Orioles organization. Angelos son is in charge of getting new spring training facilities and has been a failure and apparently you can't critique the boss's son.
Makes the Bengals look first class.
Have you heard any talk of the long term plans for the Orioles, regarding ownership? I'm hopeful that they will be sold once PA moves on, if not, there isn't much hope with his family running the organization.

Pete's reply: Not much talk about that these days.

This is gone to be a typical game for the Orioles this season. I think the sooner we accept it the better for us. The will look great through 7 innings then will find a way to LOSE the game. This is now the Orioles way. I used to stay up late on the West Coast games. This year I'll check Pete's blog when I get up. How's that for some brown nosing!

Let's see Jolbert Cabrera hits .468 and gets released for his replacement a career .200 hitter who makes two critical errors, but has awesome potential, like Pie and and a guy like Justin Turner gets totally ignored. You figure it out,and surprise Adam Eaton isn't making the starting squad, that's why we haven't seen Flanny lately,he's been working out in Arizona.Look out below.100 losses here we come.Hope I'm wrong but I'll take the under.Trembley didn't even try to win the game, pinch hit one time, what a joke and that was with a catcher hitting a buck 50.Ain't going to be pretty boys!

I just don't see how Adam Eaton make the team he's just right out SUX ! For DT he's would of jump all over Hayden Penn after the game if he's pitches like that.I would go with a 4 man staff for now and when Rich Hill ready bring him up and at the end of the month cut Danys Baez and bring up Brad Bregesen.
May 1st 25 man roster
Brian Roberts
Adam Jones
Nick Markakis
Aubery Huff
Luke Scott
Melvin Mora
Gregg Zaun June 1st Matt Wieters
Cesar Izturis
Felix Pie
Bench
Ryan Freel
Ty Wigginton
Chad Moller June 1st Gregg Zaun
Robert Andino
SP
Jeremy Guthrie
Koji Uehara
Alfredo Simon
Rich Hill
Brad Bergesen
BP
Mark Hendrickson
Matt Ablers

Pete-
Was it the Yardbirds who did a song in the sixties called "The Shape of Things To Come"?
I have seen the future, and I felt more comfortable turning and running back into the past...

If Zaun is the starter and Moeller the b-u, what happens if they bring Wieters up after a few weeks? Does moeller get relaased or will they keep all three and trim the pitching staff?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Don't like Moeller's chances in that scenario.

Im not sold on the Penn trade. I understand we are focusing on defense this year and that Andino is a great pickup defensively, however (as I expected) Eaton got lit up today. It seems like trading Penn goes against Andys gameplan of develop young pitching. Eaton wont be here after the first couple games of the season (if Rich Hill is healthy) and besides, Id rather watch a 24 year old with solid stuff get lit up than a washed up veteran who will be an 8 week Oriole. What are your thoughts?
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Can't disagree with that.

This is going to be one horrendous year for the current pitching staff. My guess is that the young guns will be heading north by the middle of June.

Pete, I agree with you on the turtle incident. Your mighty good deed is the best feel good story coming out of spring training. Your a hero to that reptile and a man among men. Cheers!

Pete's reply: Unfortunately, I also ran over the GEICO lizard and now all they have is that weird pile of money with the eyes on top of it.

Pete,
Baez, Bass, Hendrickson, Simon, Waters and Bergenson all pitched better than Alan Eaton. I don't think he deserves a place on the team over Bass or Albers.

Pete, thanks for all the great info from spring training, as I literally felt like I was there.
Pete, I know I keep saying this over an over gain, but I wish the O's would go with Bass as the 5th SP. Eaton hasn't done anything to deserve a spot on this team. I would rather see what Bass can do and if he does get shelled, the O's have Hill and Waters on the horizon.

I just read today's article on the horrible conditions at Ft. Lauderdale Stadium and the minor league complex in Sarasota. Sadder than the crappy locker rooms and the uneven, unsafe fields (a weight room in a tent in the parking lot!!) is that in the time the team's been talking about the need for new facilities, Angelos could have built his own facilities! Another symptom of the acts of idiocy and the disease of apathy thats been the hallwark of this team in the last decade or so.

According to O's website, Adam Eaton is not on the roster. I think that Bass pitched better, and I guess O's did too.

Whats up with Brian Roberts is he
injured?hasn,t been in the lineup
lately. If an outfielder gets hurt is
Montanez the first up.?

Pete's reply: He played today. And, yes, Lou would be next up.

Pete,
When will the organization quit taking hand me downs from the rest of the league when it comes to a Spring Training Facility? Florida and it's antiquated facilities and Rain-outs are no match for the facilities that the Cactus League teams enjoy. So many of the players live out here in the off season anyway, why not make the smart move like so many teams have made in the past decade? The Royals and Rangers share one of the nicest facilities in the Cactus League. THE ROYALS! Come on PA, get your act together and give the Birds a spring training facility that we can be proud of instead of trying to move into places that other teams deemed unacceptable.
