Eaton leaves to big ovation

Who would have ever predicted (except me, of course) that Adam Eaton would walk off the mound to a standing ovation from the crowd of 11,723? He gave up a couple of hits in the eighth inning and gave way to reliever Jim Johnson with two on and one out. Johnson allowed both runners to score, but that didn't really diminish the effort.

Eaton's line: 7 1/3 IP, two runs, six hits, no walks and nine strikeouts. Three of those strikeouts were against future Hall of Famer Jim Thome, who got a little revenge with the two-run hit off Johnson that cost Eaton the scoreless outing.

Perhaps the most interesting stat is the pitch count. Eaton threw 103 pitches -- 75 for strikes. That's pretty amazing.

Pete's reply: Yes!

Nice pontification on tonight's game, Peter. do you do stocks too?

Surprising good effort by Eaton! He said that he needed to step up and he did. He just need to do that throughout the season! Go Os!!

Pete--Any room left for me on the bandwagon?

Talk about getting ahead with the first pitch strike.

This makes me more concerned than anything, because if I'm not mistaken this is the first sign of the apocalypse.

Pete;

Regarding your pre-game prediction about Eaton, I am humbled and in awe.

Excellent call there, Schmucker!

Let me jump on the Pete bandwagon-good call! It's kind of like that Seinfeld episode..you know Bizarro world when George does the exact opposite of what he is supposed to do and great things happened.

Great outing, just hope this isn't some sort of false positive and we only see this Adam Eaton once this year. With continued outings like this he could pitch on any staff in the bigs! Nice job Adam and nice prognostication Pete!

It's sad when you're used to crowds under 15,000. A .500 ball-club in April (despite horrid defense and pitching) and a languishing economy doesn't fill the seats. The O's need Hendrickson and Guthrie to step up, and Koji needs run support every start, then the ball will be rolling!

"Who would have ever predicted (except me, of course) that Adam Eaton..."

I predicted it too. And I will also predict that Adam Eaton will finish this season with a winning record. Anyone care to join me out on that particular limb?

Pete's reply: Okay, you're on record.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
