Dandy debut for Bergesen

Brad Bergesen pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up three runs, leaving with no one on in the sixth after throwing 95 pitches, 58 for strikes. Dave Trembley was booed lustily when he came out to get Bergesen, but the boos turned to enthusiastic cheers as Bergesen walked off the mound.

Bergesen's line: 5 2/3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K 1 HBP.

The fans weren't thrilled to see Danys Baez enter the game, but he quickly got the final out of the inning.

Don't know if the decision to remove Bergesen was because of his pitch count, because Trembley wanted to let him leave a winner or because the three batters coming up had each hit safely in their previous at-bats.

Good job BB...

So much fun to see a new guy come in and do well. Love how fast he works.

I am a truly happy O's fan for the first time this season tonight. All is exactly as it should be. (Well if Jones was in center, it would) But what a great game so far (top of the 7th as I am writing). The energy level at the yard seems to be up tonight too, despite the realitively small crowd due to the rain.
Great to have some really interesting things to watch. Go O's.

Peter,
I know Bergesen is (obviously) one of the club's top pitching prospects, but what is the scouting report on him? Strengths/ weaknesses, etc.

Pete, Why wasn't Palmer broadcasting? I would have liked to hear his take on Bergeson as he made his debut.

Pete's reply: That schedule is made way in advance.

Let's hope he continues what he did tonight. I remember another guy several years ago that made a great debut also. He wasn't a top prospect like Brad but we all felt great about it. His name was Daniel Cabrera.

I'm optimistic that he'll settle down and be consistent and am really excited for him to continue and for the others to come up.

I think he showed a lot last night. While he doesn't have overpowering stuff, he seemed like he knew what he was doing even when the going got tuff. I'm sure he learned some along the way which is the ultimate goal along with giving your team a chance to win.

I think Trembley was right to take him out when he did. You don't want his pitch count gonig into the 100's his first time out. Plus he was ahead, in control and it gave the fans a chance to show their appreciation.

The bullpen also did their thing which was also crucial. Great way to start the homestand.

I was in the bleachers for last night's game and I have to say the fans sitting there were having a great time! We were very excited to get to be there for Bergesen's debut after watching him at Bowie last season. The only bad part was that we had to leave a little earlier in the game than we wanted due to the rain delay.

He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
