Why I love minor league baseball

Take a look at the latest concession craze at Fifth Third Ballpark, home of the West Michigan Whitecaps. It's a cheeseburger that weighs 1.666 pounds on a bun that is eight inches across and it's covered with all sorts of strange stuff.

Here's a link to a CNBC blog about it, and here's a picture for those of you who want to see what it looks like before you fly to Michigan to watch some minor league ball.

That looks like an inch of refried beans under the burger, but the team says it's "chili." I'm okay with it either way. Sure knocks the stuffing out of the giant turkey leg they sell at the Mets spring training field in Port St. Lucie, though I wouldn't turn my nose up at either one.

Wow Pete! Now that's a "whopper" burger! The drool started running just looking at the picture. You really know how to hurt a guy. My doctor just told me to lose 50 lbs in a hurry; to stop clogging my arteries. Thanks a lot!
Soy dog anyone?

mmm....Burger! Now how about some meat on the O's?

Pete's reply: My bad. Thought you might like a laugh, the way things have been going here.

Damn Pete, that looks tasty and I just got done with dinner but it makes me hungry again......stuffed shells vs. a 1.66 pound burger loaded with everything? Hmmm, burger for me. So, when are you going to MI to try it out? I'm assuming you'll be there soon as long as you can get a story out of it so you can convince your editor to foot the bill!

A pound and a half?!???

That would challenge even you, Schmuck!!!!!!

Pete's reply: Don't underestimate me.

Pete-

I can feel the plaque buildup in my arteries just looking at that accompanying picture...

The sight of that just made me throw up in my mouth.

Well, have a great Lent.

Pete, just read your story about the divide in the clubhouse and it reminds me of the Ravens the past few years.I'm not really sure they will score more runs than last year. Youv'e replaced Millar and Hernandez's bats with Pie and Zaun, neither of which are run producers. If I'm not mistaken, the O's led the league last year running into unforced outs.Trying to make people like Markakis steal bases is only going to run us into more outs and dead rallies.Jones isn't nearly as fast running the bases as he is in the OF. Pie's OBP isn't going to provide his with base stealing oppurtunities.

gives me indigestion just looking at it.

Look dare good , but that my weekly sodium in take.

Hello, Peter,

Is that for me!?!?!?! Mmmmmmm. . . . . . Tasty!!

Pete,

I am a Baltimore boy who relocated to Michigan 2 years ago. I will have to drive over to see a Whitecaps game and let you know how this wonderful- looking, artery-clogging creation tastes. Excellent find!

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
