Penn not mighty in second (updated)

Hayden Penn walked the leadoff man in the second inning and gave up a run on a single by Cody Ross. To be fair, however, Ross's single seemed to hold up in left field long enough for Felix Pie to catch it if he has as much range as advertised. He took a bad route to the ball and it landed not far in front of him. Penn has now walked two more batters and is struggling with his command.

Now the wheels have come off. Emilio Bonifacio just hit a broken-bat liner into the right field corner to clear the bases and Penn just brought him home with a wild pitch. The Marlins have scored five times in the second.

Pete Hayden is done, so is Bass and Eaton, just let Bergensen start and let some of the young pitches learn to pitch in the majors now to get experience, this is ridiculous and Angelos and Trembley think O's Fans in this economic recession want to see this crappy pitching, LOL funny stuff

*cringes* Here's hoping this is a fluke outing....

Peter: My compliments on posting so often that by the time one has a comment, you've moved on. Good job.

Anyway, about the idea of five right-handers in the rotation: Why not? I don't understand why having a lefthander in the rotation is a good thing in and of itself. In the bullpen, you need a mix. But to start the games, shouldn't you just go with the best five pitches, regardless of handedness?

Put it this way: you have a right-handed starter with a 4.8 ERA and a lefty with a 5.0 ERA. Is there any reason to start the lefty?

Pete's reply: I would go with the best five, period. I'm not sure there is a best five, however.

Pete,

Where is Bergesen pitching? He had great stats in S.T.

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: He's been optioned to Norfolk, but could be back very soon.

You jinxed him with your previous blog..... now the O's season rests on your shoulders!!

Maybe we can trade him to the Cubs for there entire starting rotation! Probably should throw in Sherrill and Baez to sweeten the deal for the Cubs.

Still think we need to give Penn a long look (but maybe Kranitz and Trembley know he will never shine)

Please Pete do me a favor just once before you leave Fla.Tell me that you agree that the oriole brass did a horrible job of putting togther a pitching staff. How in the world could they have overestimated what they had and be forced to start the season with that starting rotation. Hayden penn doesn't belong in the majors,. PERIOD. And for all of you KOOL AId drinkers that keep saying that picking up Flex pie and rich hill was low risk and high reward you are crazy. Luke scott is a gold glove outfielder compared to pie in left, but they will insist on keeping him over montanez. Please pete the decisions on this team haven't been rational at all.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think they did a wonderful job of putting together next year's pitching staff, but I fully agree this one is looking really bad at the moment.

What happened to you pete. did you just get to frustrated and resign. I wouldn't blame you one bit.

Pete's reply: Frankly, I just zoned out last night and forgot to approve comments. My bad.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
