Penn: No excuses
Hayden Penn was clearly dejected after giving up six runs in 3 2/3 innings today against the St. Louis Cardinals. He obviously knows that a big opportunity may have gotten away.
"What can I say?" he said. "I didn't get it done. I made some good pitches. They were just better than me today."
Penn said he felt good physically and claimed that he didn't wilt under any pressure to make the roster.
"I've been saying all spring, I either get it done or I don't,'' said Penn, whose ERA rose to 10.06. "I didn't today and I didn't do it all spring."
Though he seldom shows much emotion, Penn did not try to hide his disappointment.
"For me to say I'm not disappointed, I'd be lying in your face,'' he said. "I'm very disappointed. I thought I'd have a better showing and I didn't. But the next time I get the ball, I just have to correct it."

What's goiog on? Gomez [ we really need him ] will make the all star team. I hope Lou lays down at Norfolk, Sal too. Cheers to Flannigan. What a job he's doing ! Pie will be the American league MVP. Roberts will ask Gibbons to send him some stuff.

Sounds like a guy who wants to move on to another team. Not a bad strategy considering his chance of success here in the next two years.

Penn is only 24 years old! He has lots of time to get it right, But sadly it may be with another team. THis is a case of if Mcpahil had been around, Penn may not have been rushed to Baltimore so fast. Maybe would still have options left or would be more ready contribute to teh team if he had spent more time in the minors.

Is there any talk of packaging Penn with someone else, say Scott, for a more established SP?
Or is it more likely they will try to let him clear waivers...I'm operating on the assumption that he doesn't make the opening day roster at this point...is that fair to say?
Thanks!

Pete's reply: I doubt he ends up here on Opening Day, but nobody's going to give up a lot for him because the O's have to waive him.

Good bye and good riddance. Some's got it and some ain't.
Don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out.
These cliches appear appropriate in Penn's case. This team has wasted way too much time and energy on him and he has not responded with anything positive. So... have a nice career doing something else.

Can't help feel for the poor bugger. Oh Now it's down to the doubtables, Eaton and Hendrickson, and Brian "I can't pitch from a windup" Bass. To paraphrase the great philosopher, Mr Oliver Hardy, "another nice mess we've gotten into".

OK, so Penn isn't likely to make the roster out of spring training. What's the likelihood that someone out there thinks he can magically turn it around with a change of scenery and claims him off waivers? Wouldn't that team have to keep him on their ML roster or expose him to waivers also? Not that I particularly care one way or the other, just that it would be nice to have someone that was held onto for years because he was expected to produce actually provide some value to the organization through performance or trade.

Peter, if you have an ounce of humanity you will pass the word to others to keep all sharp objects out of Trembley's reach.
