Penn makes his exit

Hayden Penn gave up six runs on eight hits before being removed from the game against the St. Louis Cardinals with two outs in the fourth inning. If you're keeping score at home, that undoubtedly ended any hope of him making the starting rotation and cast his future with the team in serious doubt.

The Orioles aren't saying yet what they will do with him, but considering the difficult pitching decisions facing the club, I've got to suspect they try to push him through waivers. He'll probably be claimed, but it's a chance the team probably will have to take.

As much as I hate to see them do it your right on the money Peter.

Any chance Bergesen get's reconsidered for the staff seeing as he outperformed everyone minus Simon so far?

Say goodbye to Penn. He's been so bad that I'm not sure anyone would claim him if they put him on waivers.

Looks like all the Penn naysayers were right. I agree, someone will likely snap him up, take a flier. Which may not work out for those clubs either. Too bad for us, too bad for H.P.

Pete, I think the best thing for Hayden is for another team to grab him, so he can start fresh, because frankly there are too many young guns in the Orioles' farm system with better stuff and better command for him to be much of a factor anymore.

He'd just get buried down there, as other pitchers leap frog over him. I don't see a future for him with the O's. The Nationals are always looking for retreads, so maybe that's a fit for him.

really think he will be the 13th pitcher. They will not release him yet. I am sure he will work out of the bullpen one more time before a decision is made. But really he does not have a blazing fastball, has to lead with a curve. He is not a finesse pitcher.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
