O's: Brian Matusz can deal
Here's an interesting anecdote from Orioles beat reporter Jeff Zrebiec, who visited the minor league facility at Twin Lakes Park in Sarasota, Fla.:
Remember how manager Dave Trembley and pitching coach Rick Kranitz sent Brian Matusz to minor league camp under instructions to throw only his fastball and changeup in his early camp games. Well, he really wanted to do that, until he got hit around in his first minor league start of the spring.
So, Matusz went to minor league pitching coordinator Dave Schmidt and asked to be allowed to at least show hitters his curveball and slider once in awhile. He got the go ahead and some interesting results.
In his next two starts, he combined to pitch nine innings and give up one hit and one walk.

Not to be negative but I will anyway. Given the track record of the Orioles top pitching prospects, since Mike Mussina came up, I suggest Matusz just get a jump on things and go ahead with the pre-emptive Tommy John surgery and learn to hit. This way he will be young enough to work his way up through the minors as a hitter.
Orioles pitching prospect is code for future Dr Andrews patient.

I hope the minor league coaches are not refusing to listen to the major league coaches.
I assume that everyone knows that Matusz has great movement to his pitches, but they want him to learn how to overpower hitters with his fastball and throw off their timing with his changeup.
I am very pleased with his numbers, but I trust thta Trembley and Kranitz had a reason for their orders.

cant wait till 2011, we will actually have a major league rotation.

Based on the comments I predict the starting rotation of:
Guthrie
Uehara
Simon
Bass
Eaton/Hendrickson
will be a very serviceable foundation.

Sometimes you can't force someone to be something there not, especially if what they are is already good. Its so early for this kid and he's so advanced, I am confident he will learn what they want him to and continue to grow and excel.
Go O's

I'm assuming thee Kranitz wants him to command the fastball and change-up location better. He has got to be able to command the fastball and change-up location to be effective above AAA. If my ten year old players would listen to it instead of of the allure of the curve everyone would end up happier too.
It isn't about the numbers now, it is about learning to pitch.
Learn to locate the fastball and change-up!!

Kranitz ought to go over there and read the riot act to someone. His instructions/orders were spot on. The kid needs to learn to spot his fastball and learn how to combine the changeup with it to get the hitters timing off. Young players just don't understand the importance of those two things. Getting that down pat will make him far more important than relying on curves and sliders this early in his career, not counting the damage to the young arm.

Matusz will be up in 2010. Probably not on opening day, but he won't just be a September call up either. He's a finesse guy and he already throws his pitches for strikes. He just needs to learn some of the nuances of professional ball and he is ready.

Interesting anecdote on Rick Kranitz...I was watching a piece on ESPN that had a Q&A with Greg Maddux. They went over his changeup grip and asked him where he learned it. The answer: "Rick Kranitz taught it to me in the minors." How awesome is that!

Schmidt isn't doing Matusz or the Orioles any favors by ignoring his instructions
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I would think Schmidt checked with someone here before allowing that.

Any one tired of Trembley and Kranny. They have really failed to show in the spring that they know how to get the most out of our staff. Even better effort last year gentlemen. Besides Johnson and maybe Guthrie, tell me one pitcher who thrived (including staying healthy) under these two last year. They have really done wonders for Hayden Penn. Yeah, let's put him out there inconsistently, not work with him, and see if he can thrive. Great idea. Two legit starting pitchers. Really? This is what we have to watch this year. I feel like the Groundskeepers in Major League. Can't wait till training camp (Go Ravens)

What about Pedro? Word is he was throwing 88-92mph at the WBC. In our current rotation, he could be a number 1 at 37.

I'm not so sure that they really have two legit starters. I'd say that Koji is reallya question mark.
