Orioles: Today's cuts
The Orioles, as expected, announced some cuts at the end of the game. Left fielder Nolan Reimold and reliever Wilfrido Perez were optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Brandon Snyder and Blake Davis were reassigned to minor league camp. And pitcher Scott Chiasson and catcher Guillermo Quiroz were released.
"Perez was probably for me the surprise of the camp,'' manager Dave Trembley said. "We told him what we told Reimold. You start the season with certain guys and you've got to have other guys ready. So I told him to go down to the minor leagues and get ready."
Chiasson was released at his own request so he can join a Mexican League team, but the club failed in a couple of attempts to find something for Quiroz.
"We appreciate what he did for us,'' said Trembley. "We just didn't have a spot
for him."

He told Perez to work on his bunting?
Can you ask Trembley if he thinks he compromised his promise of competition being important with the reality that at least some of the cuts today (Reimold for example) were clearly outplaying folks that play the same position and were not cut?
To me he comes off as disingenuous. I think he talks a good game but he obviously had a lot of positions set in his mind before training camp started and actual results do not matter.

I would like to see Perez as the closer at AAA. I think he will be the first of many relievers to be summoned to Baltimore. I would like to see him and Liz at AAA in relief roles because I think they will be a big part of the O's BP of the future.
Pete, does Baez make the team because he could be a spot starter in the BP or does the decision on him, go down to the wire, and in that same vein, what about Penn? For a guy that is supposed to be fighting for his professional life, he hasn't done much to change his image, so maybe if Simon and Bass continue to impress, Penn should be cut.
I think the O's will go with Guthrie, Koji, Eaton, Hill and Simon.

Pete's reply: I think Baez could be a long guy, depending on what some other people do. I think it would be in his best interests to win a place in the rotation, or his future will be very uncertain.

Line for Pie on the day Reimold was told he didn't make the cut: 0-4, with two strikeouts, a bad bunt and a weak grounder and a terrible fielding miscue.
As for the other cuts, no real surprises. Snyder was getting his taste of the big league camp for the first time, Perez though pretty good (yesterday's game not so much and the one before, fair), has Walker in the way, Blake Davis though impressed, re-fractured his foot and Chris Gomez, Johlbert Cabrera and Donnie Murphy ahead of him, Chiasson was a non factor and asked for his release and Quiroz didn't sign and had too much competition ahead of him.

You know pete, nolan reimold is better right now then pie, I know they think pie will turn out to be a star just like the cubs did, but guy's like montanez and reimold are just as good if given a chance.I know they have opitions left on them , but i hope they don't put all there eggs in one basket with pie.

You send the most effective relief pitcher in spring training to the minors, why, because you want him to improve on his giving up one earned run for the spring? What's there for him to work on? He consistently throws strikes, strikes batters out, or alternatively, ellicits ground balls from them. Dumb move for a pitching poor team to make.

what in the world are they thinking..
perez & reimold had great spring
they should be on the team..until
they prove they do not belong...if
all spots were open then they are
getting screwed

How naive are all of you? Do you not understand that salaries, options and other contractual issues are at play here? While the rotation was wide open and the bullpen as well for that matter, you're all fools if you think any other positions were. If Itzuris batted .065 this spring he still would be at SS on opening day and the same is true for Mora, Roberts, Huff, Zaun, Markakis and Jones. The outfield was locked long before spring training. Even if we hadn't made the deal for Pie, Luke Scott would have been ahead of Reimold on the depth chart. Pie was one of the top prospects in all of baseball, not just for the Cubs and once the warehouse dealt for him, his shot at LF was locked. Just because Reimold had a big spring against mediocre competition doesn't mean he's the next Ryan Braun so get over it. If he lights up AAA, it just means we've got a nice trade chip either in him, Pie or Scott and I promise you, we're going to need to send someone somewhere in order to get some pitching this season because our top prospects aren't ready yet and we don't have a single solid guy locked into the rotation right now and I include Guthrie based on his WBC performance.

Man, some people read way too much into spring training.
Doc Halladay got rocked against the Red Sox last week. Should the Jays send him down?
Just because a guy has had a fantastic spring, doesn't mean he's major league ready.
This is why Trembley's the coach, and all of you arm chair managers aren't.

Looks like McPhail wanted Reimold out of town before he hit more homers and proved himself to be better than Pie.It's funny how no one wants to "rush" O's prospects but they're more than happy to throw Pie in over his head.

Pete-
Some of your regular bloggers are upset, and rightly so. Did Trembley have a set "agenda" as to who will go north and who is to stay behind? It just goes to prove that politics pervades all aspects of our lives, including being a MLB manager.

Pete,
I guess batting .321 with four big shots and eight ribbies doesn't get the job done for the O's. He's probbaly just a loser...no, wait, how many winning seasons have the O's had now in the current decade? Think the answer is NONE! IThe downside of being a non-Cubbie!)
