Orioles: The morning news

Here are a few early items while you decided whether to go into work late today because of the snow. It's cold here, too, but we're not expecting any sympathy from the frigid Mid-Atlantic:

-- Left-hander John Parrish, who has been sidelined with shoulder tendinitis, will start a throwing program tomorrow.

-- Rich Hill, who was scratched from his scheduled exhibition start with some elbow stiffness yesterday, may pitch in an intrasquad game today if he is up to it, but that's probably a long shot.

"That's real iffy,'' said pitching coach Rick Kranitz. "I'm really looking at Saturday."

-- The new coaches in camp are getting up to speed. Scott McGregor and Rick Dempsey came in over the weekend and quickly started bringing back memories. They're here, however, to help the new guys create some new memories for O's fans.

Today's Orioles lineup

Brian Roberts 2B
Adam Jones DH
Nick Markakis RF
Aubrey Huff 1B
Ty Wigginton 3B
Luke Scott LF
Justin Christian CF
Gregg Zaun C
Chris Gomez SS

Brad Bergeson SP

Kinda like that lineup, although I'd like to see more Reimold. Hope you had a great anniversary weekend, Pete.

Pete, thanks for the great blogs, as always. Looks like a geat line-up and glad to see Adam J. back in, even if a DH. I know it is only a couple games. But, O's winning on Sunday. This is THE NEW O's. Second, do you think Matt W. is already giving the O's a tough dec. for making the opening day roster?

I'm excited to see what O's can do on offense this year, especially if guys like Montanez, Reimold, and Wieters step up. If our offense & defense can get a year to gel together, just in time for our young pitchers, I like our chances in 2010 or '11.

Nothing on Eaton. Must be all that romance you have experienced the last few days.

Pete's reply: Give me a chance to get settled. I'll get to him.

Pete, tell me Markakis doesn't look like Kramer with his new du! Put Elaine at SS. She swings a better bat than Gomez and she's a proud O's fan.

Offense should score plenty. Defense is improved and the bullpen should be good as well. The team appears improved. Shall we say .500 going into 2010?

Amazing how the o's do not seem to be willing to take the best 25 north after ST. They lose a bunch of games then begin tinkering and wearing players down. Then make the Sept. call ups of the best Minor League players. Then surprised to have a sub .500 season. Get Weiters, Tillman, Arieta, etc. on the OD roster if they are the best players in ST. Shed the rest. After OD every game counts.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
