Orioles: Roster cuts

The Orioles have sent out eight players today. Pitchers Bob McCrory, Kam Mickolio and Chris Waters were optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Non-roster players Justin Turner, Justin Christian, John Parrish, Brad Hennessey and Donnie Murphy were reassigned to the minor league facility in Sarasota, Fla.

No surprises. Mickolio said he was just happy to stay as long as he did.

"I have three options,'' he said. "I was pretty sure that at some point I was going down. It would have been nice to stay, though. I felt like I threw really well. I felt like I came in here better prepared than last year. I got here early and thought it went well."

Good, Baez won't be a starter. But I won't really be impressed until MacPhail (and Peter of course), release him and eat his contract, just like they did with Gibbons last year. Maybe Baez has enough left in the tank to be a mediocre reliever, but that is very questionable. Certainly, he has absolutely no role in the future of the Orioles or their rebuilding process, nor will anyone give us anything for him. It's time to make the tough, but correct decision, and give him his release, just like we did with Gibbons last year (which earned a lot of respect around here last year).

Second, I think the last three rotation spots should go to Eaton, Hendrickson, and Simon, with Penn becoming the long man. If Hill can show he's capable of pitching at the MLB level again, then he can take the spot of whoever looks the worst after the first few weeks. I'm still somewhat unconviced about Hendrickson though, and would be open to seeing Penn take his rotation spot and Liz move into the bullpen.

Finally, assuming the team goes with a 12-man pitching staff, I think the last utility infield spot should go to Jolbert Cabrera. He's batting over .400 for the spring! On the other hand, though I like and respect Chris Gomez for what he's done in the past, he hasn't done anything this spring to show he deserves a spot on the team. Cabrera showed up ready to play. He should win the last spot.

What is the difference between being optioned to triple a and sent to minor league camp?

Pete's reply: Good question. They all go to minor league camp, but the guys who are on the 40-man roster have to be designated to a minor league roster.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
