Orioles: Looking for answers
The Orioles are headed for Jupiter this morning for an exhibition game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium. Mark Hendrickson will be the starting pitcher and Hayden Penn may follow, but those aren't the biggest issues of the day.
Rich Hill and Koji Uehara are scheduled to throw in simulated action today back at Fort Lauderdale Stadium, and the implications of those two seemingly routine rehab workouts are fairly significant.
If all goes well, Hill and Uehara could return to the exhibition rotation later this week. Hill would still be very iffy for Opening Day. Uehara probably could get back on schedule in time to start the season on time.
If either has another setback, the club will be looking at a very different starting rotation than manager Dave Trembley and pitching coach Rick Kranitz were pondering a month ago, but right now it looks like it will be:
Jeremy Guthrie
Koji Uehara
Adam Eaton
Mark Hendrickson
Alfredo Simon
I'm going to guess Hill starts the season in extended spring training and enters the rotation in mid-April, but that's just my guess.
If you recall me projecting a different rotation just 24 hours ago, that was before the Orioles shocked me and everybody else by optioning Brad Bergesen to the Triple-A Norfolk roster. I'm sure we'll get an explanation of that some time this morning.

My guess, he needs to work on his bunting. Heck it worked as an excuse to send down Nolan right?
Ohh I got it, he needs to work on having too many options.

We have waited sooooo long... We seemingly have the arms - but lack the experience. I, for one, would rather wait and suffer a bit longer.
Regardless, the confidence I have in the Front Office allows me to dream of 2010-2011... Thanks Peter.

Don't worry, Pete, we're all changing our projected starting rotations on a daily basis. So Simon has one good start and moves into the rotation. Another start like the last one and he may pitch Opening Day. Since Hendrickson is starting today in place of Penn, does this mean they have him penciled into the rotation to start the season? Is Brian Bass getting any consideration for a starting berth? He's pitched as well as anybody so far this spring (2.79 ERA).

Your waiting for an explanation? Its easy to figure. We have three 90+ win teams in our div. So why throw him to the wolves and create Hayden Penn Vol. 2 and start his service time running? Patience...

A Japanese unknown, a Philly reject, a Nats reject and a Mexican league whatever. We really are pathetic. It's going to be another long, long season.

The O's are doing the same thing with Bergeson that they did with Reimold. No need to rush them this year. A few months of AAA can't hurt any of them. And take the time to check out the "out of option" players in April/May (Pie, Pauley, Penn, Hill) and see if they can cut it. If not, then Bergeson, Reimold, etal get called up by June. A win/win actually since you get to see the "unknown" players during the season. Find out if they have any value and have readily available replacements in Norfolk if they prove worthless. Good for the O's long term success.

My guess is he is the 5th starter and they sent him out to stretch out and be ready for when they need him.

A lot needs to go right Pete for this not to be the scariest starting rotation that the O's have broken camp with in decades IMHO.

Dosen't have to be on the big league roster since he is out of options? If anything he would probably start on the DL if hurt. That would give him time to build up arm strength.

My quess would be that the inning crunch is just getting too tough and that Bergeson is going to get more consistant work at the minor league complex.
Let the kid go to Norfolk and get some regular work in instead of being a possible 5th guy and getting spotty work in April.
With the cast of suspects that the O's are trying to trot out for a starting rotation, I'm pretty sure we'll see "BB" throwing in the rotation before the season's out.
Jamie Walker and others may not be very happy about how many times they have to get up again this year. With a bullpen that's got some guys with questionable health, this rotation could be a receipe for disaster.
Kojo was available because he'd had leg problems for the last couple of years in Japan. If he was fully healthy LA, the Yanks or BoSox would have bidding the price up past what the O's would have paid.
Eaton was let go in Philly, and Hendrickson was supposed to be a long releiver who could spot start. If we're down to him being a regular rotation guy, the O's could be in a spot.
Simon could be a surprise find like Guthrie was a couple of years ago. I've still got hope that Hill could be another diamond in the rough if he can get healthy again.
And Guthrie spending the spring away from camp could be really scary, Trembley could be in for a long summer if he has health issues like some WBC pitchers have in the past.
My quess is that they carry Penn out of the spring hoping to salvage something from the once number one prospect. My big question is what do they do with Beaz?

I was very shocked to hear that Bergesen was sent down too. But With the two rainouts in in the span of five days, (both of which i had tickets to), they need to get more pitchers more work so as to make the right decision for the rotation. It also makes sense to let Beregesen dominate in triple- A first before being called up somewhat like Wieters.
I mostly agree with your projections. My guess for the rotation at this point is
Guthrie
Uehara
Hill ( i think he'll be healthy in time)
Eaton/ Penn
Bass/ Simon/ Waters
I think that Hendrickson will be in the bullpen not the rotation, i see him more as a swing man than starter. If the pitching staff is twelve man then i see the bullpen as
Hendrickson
Albers
Sarfate
Walker
Johnson
Ray
Sherrill
If the staff is 13 man i see whichever pitcher doesnt make the rotation ie: Bass, Waters, Liz or Penn being another long man. But i think that a four man bench is more likely just because so many of the hitters have been flat out raking this spring ie; Turner, Monatnez, Salazar, Moore, while gomez has been struggling. So i say four man bench consisting of Moeller, Freel, Wigginton, and Montanez

Yea pete your explanation will be the same explanation that andy has been BS's the fans with. We don't won't to rush these young kids we don't won't to over expose them when there not ready. You know i am already getting tired of listening to the word STOPGAP. We the fans are the one's getting over exposed with that word. We have a terrific everyday lineup to put on the field every day and to put that pitching staff out there is a disgrace. I am all for this rebuilding project but you have to be at least competitive. That pitching staff isn't any better then that garbage we trotted on the field last year. I really believe that this spring training camp was ill run, the experiemnt to bring 37 pitchers to camp was a disaster. And why the orioles have fallen in love with pie is way beyond me. He is just another over rated ball player from another oraganization that will never amount to anything. This scouts love to throw around the term 5 TOOL player. Montanez and reimold are both better then him I hope the oriole management hasn't brain washed you as well pete.Start speaking up...

Shoutout to Jeff V. (top) for a hilarious post! I truly LOL'ed. Best line since John in Roch's class asked how the air looked coming out of Hill's hand during his shadow pitching session.

Maybe the Orioles can trade up for a quarterback inthe NFL Draft, or offer a spot to Boller. Either of those options seem better than what surely awaits...

Two weeks before opening day and the rotation is in turmoil. Ahh, to be an O’s fan. I think that Andy MacPhail has done a decent job, but the problem doesn’t reside with him - it’s Angelos. Why else would they cut the salary of the ace of the rotation. It sends a mixed message to him and the rest of the team. Andy has signed Roberts and Markakis to long term contracts, improved position depth, and not brought in our future rotation guys to give them more time to develop their skills. I agree with that thought process. However, I disagree with process related to the rotation. Bring in an overwhelming number of players without experience or numbers to compete for the rotation. Pedro looks more appealing each day.
