Orioles: Guthrie headed back, will start against Twins
No. 1 starter Jeremy Guthrie confirmed for Jeff Zrebiec tonight that he is taking an overnight flight back to Florida and is expected to arrive in Fort Lauderdale early this morning in time to be on the team bus to Fort Myers. He likely will be the starter against the Twins and Adam Eaton will follow him to the mound, based on comments by pitching coach Rick Kranitz on Sunday morning.
Guthrie headed right to the airport after Team USA was eliminated from the World Baseball Classic tonight at Dodger Stadium.

Peter,
How come Guthrie did not head back to Ft. Lauderale a couple days ago when the O's wanted him to. The Orioles did not want him to stay at the WBC, right?

Pete's reply: They would have prefered to have him here, but they did not tell him to come back.

Guess they can't afford to allow for jet lag.

This will not probably be a good outing for Guthrie due to the potential of the lack of sleep throughout the trip.

Where are Izturis and Mora? BRob should have been on the plane too.

Pete's reply: Haven't seen the three of them yet.

Pete,
You want to talk about a true class act and a baseball junkie that is dedicated to the game, that would be Guts. Been across the country many times and red-eyes s_ck....and then he is hopping on the bus to go 2+ hours to the game. That's enough to make me want to take a nap.
Anyway, any word on when Mora, Izturis and Roberts will be back?
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I assume all will be in uniform for tomorrow's game against the Nats.

do you think the orioles will shop around the two closers we have for a another starter gino
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I doubt that. Don't think they would get a quality starting pitcher for either closer, and having both is a real good thing.

You know pete i think being down in fla with orioles for so long has made you soft. All the comments about the turmoil of the orioles rotation by many fans including myself have just been completley ignored by yourself.. NOT THE SAME PETE I KNOW
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I've been writing about it every day. Don't know what you mean. If you're asking me to blast the staff, there's absolutely no point to that. Everything has already been said. I am, however, as concerned about it as you are...maybe more, since I'm looking at it every day.

Pete,
I've heard all the arguements about not rushing our "young" talent to the majors but I just did a quick look at the 1966 World Champion Baltimore Orioles roster and guess what? 13 out of 34 players (38%) on that roster were 24 years old or younger including guys named Palmer, Bunker, McNally, Phoebus, Etchebarren, Belanger, Johnson, Blair, and Blefary. The current Orioles roster has 2 guys out of 40 (5%) that are 24 (an none younger). I know that times have changed, but that much???
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'm afraid times have changed that much. The game is different. The economics are different. The players are handled differently now.

Pete
The major difference between teams of the 1966 era and now? In my opinion it's the starting pitchers. They were groomed to complete games, and when they didn't they took it as a personal affront. Now it's a big freaking deal to have a starter go six innings. Too much emphasis is put on pitch counts. Everything is monitored. Where and when did baseballet so soft?

Pete-
What has gone wrong with Guthrie? There's seemingly a total loss of confidence in his stuff. That could make for an even longer Os season...
...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Let's not panic. He did take a redeye and a two-hour bus ride before yesterday's start.

Rotation? There is no rotation ! Are you talking about Eaton, Hendrickson, Pauley........Puhleeze. Should we say "Waiver Wire" rotation ? This is truly a mess.
