Orioles: Bergesen explanation
Manager Dave Trembley said today that one of the reasons Brad Bergesen was sent to the minors yesterday was to cover the team in case somebody gets hurt between now and the start of the season.
"We had to send him out so he can be out for 10 days so if somebody gets hurt we can get him back,'' Trembley said. "He's going to pitch for us, but it's probably not going to happen on April 6.
Still, the move raised some eyebrows because the coaching staff seemed to be projecting Bergesen as one of the five starters after a spring in which he was the most consistent starting pitcher in a spring rotation that still has spots open.
"He had a good spring,'' Trembley said. "He's a guy we all feel would be at the top of the list of guys who are called up here. We needed to get him out so he could get his innings. We think a lot of him. He just didn't make the club out of spring training.
"I told him it's inconceivable to think the 12 or 13 guys we break camp with are going to be here all season."

What a load of BS.He didn't make the ballclub because they owe Baez and others too much money.and do they really think a log of him or was that a typo?lol. He pitched better than anybody else consistently throughout spring training. But this is shaping up to be the worst starting rotation in Orioles history, and at least the worst in MLB this year.If not many many years.

We all think a log ot you, too, Peter.

Pete,
I'm not shocked that they sent Bergesen down. I makes sense from a business standpoint. As long as he doesn't break camp with the O's, then his arbitration and free agency elibility are pushed back. Even without rainouts, the O's would only need the 5th starter once between opening day and April 24th.
While we're on that subject, what is the timeline for arbitration and free-agency? How would that differ for Wieters if he made the big club out of camp versus being called up 2 weeks into the season versus being called up after the all-star break? I imagine a whole article could be done on this subject.

Pete's reply: I don't think Bergesen's demotion has anything to do with service time. It's less important with pitchers because teams are not going to try to extend them early.

I'm starting to question Trembley's decision making. First Reimold, now Bergeson. These guys out performed everyone they were competing with this spring, yet they cannot make the squad. When a team says jobs are open and competitive and then the team doesn't give the jobs to the players who outshine everyone else, one has to wonder whether there is a committment to winning. If Danys Baez, who would have trouble making the Italian WBC team, makes this squad, then I know that the Orioles are not serious about ending the 10 year losing streak.

I honestly think Trembley should be a politician as he speak out of both sides of his mouth according to what the front office is doing. The man seems to lack an original opinion or a mind of his own but is Andy's puppet, the Orioles version of Howdy Doody.

Totally absurd explanation, especially that "We think a lot of him. He just didn't make the club out of spring training," garbage.
This coming after Bergensen outpitched practically everyone of the staff!
I believe this is an example of Trembley saying exactly what he's been told to say, because the move wasn't his call. So, as much as I think the team's headed in the right direction, this fiasco clearly shows that problems remain in how the front office is being run.
Whoever ordered Bergesen's demotion really should be ashamed of himself!

Pete's reply: Well, don't get carried away. He had a three-plus ERA and opposing hitters were batting .270 against him in spring. He was doing fine, but he wasn't a slam dunk to dominate the Yankees and Red Sox. Be honest, if he started the season and those teams hammered him right out of the bigs, wouldn't you be ripping the O's for ruining him like they did Hayden Penn?

Makes as much sense as a screen door on a submarine.

attention orioles' fans. forget about the first half this season. as the second half progesses you are going to see more of our future of the team making it to the major league club. it's all about 2010 so if you are buying tickets for this season you're going out to watch the other team, in most cases... particulary in the first 90 games or so. the front office realizes the team is going nowhere this yr so no one is getting "rushed" to the majors.

Peter!! Would you kindly translate Mr. Trembley's statement? He's saying it's preferable to have Bergesen return to replace an injured pitcher to be named later than to be one of the five starters on April 6? I don't follow this reasoning.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I think, given the fact that he has never pitched above Double-A and the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox are looming early in the schedule, they only want to start him here in an emergency.

I don't get it!?

hendrickson and his 6.0 era or Bergenson. No brainer unless you're Trembley/ I like Trembley but this move shows no braines and no understanding that the fane deserve the BEST team on the field!
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Don't think the choice was Hendrickson or Bergesen.

Pete,
I think he got sent down because the Os wanted to take a longer look at Adam Eaton. But I think he is more valuable to the Os than Adam Eaton.

I still can't figure out this demotion. Does he mean that Bergeson didn't outpitch the other candidates? Let's pray that Guthrie's arm is sound after his abysmal showing in the WBC. By the way, what is Selig trying to accomplish with this idea?

Pete's reply: I think Bud wants to take over the world.

In an article the statement was made that Hendrickson was going to replace Hill because Trembley wanted a lefthander in the rotation.
I' m sure Henrickson is a nice guy but based solely on his record he is not a starting pitcher.
The O's have a good ballclub that will get better after they bring up Weiters in June.
They need to send the best 3 SPs north to join Guthrie and Uiehara in the rotation. An ERA in the 3's and a .270 BA against him qulaifies Bergensen as one of the best. What I see happening is that the team SPs will wear out the bullpen by July (again) and they will tank the rest of the season. IRather than having guys like Hendrickson around use Bergensen and Penn as starters and see what happens. It really can't be worse. If you want a lefty, use Waters. At least he has an occasional great game!
